A message from our President: Boiling Springs High School, now Gardner-Webb College, first opened its doors the year that the movement for high schools started in North Carolina. At that time there was little opportunity for one to prepare for college in North Carolina except in private high schools and by special tutors. Contrasted with the $65,000,000 annual appropriation for public education now, the amount spent in 1907 is indeed insignifi- cant. The college made a notable contribution to the education of our youth until the State had so entered the field that there was no more need for the many private high schools. Like some others, Gardner-Webb chose to enter the field of the junior college in which the State was not interested rather than cease to be. At the present time the State is entering the field of the junior college. One college opened this year in Wilmington. Another is soon to open in Charlotte. Soon, perhaps in twenty-five years, a municipal junior college will be in reach of every boy and girl in North Carolina. What is to be the place of Gardner- Webb tomorrow? It has at- tained and holds an honorable place now. Shall it cease to be, retrench and sink into an inferior place to struggle in poverty and with low standards? Or, shall it advance into the commanding position of a high grade junior college? Shall it remain a small school, or seek the financial and other ex- ternal advantages of numbers? Shall it seek to make money by charging large fees, or shall it continue devoted to the training of boys and girls of character and purpose, but with small means? Shall it seek the popularity of the crowd and market place, or shall it maintain high academic stand- ards with a wholesome and healthy Christian coloring? These questions are vital and not academic and will take more than mere assent to answer them. 12
