REHDEZVOVS So peaceable, are these people . So tractable, so peaceable, are these peo- ple , that I swear to your majesties there are not in the world a better nation. They love their neighbors as themselves, and their discourse is ever sweet and gentle, and accompanied with a smile; and although it is true that they are naked, yet their manners are decorous and praiseworthy . Columbus , Describing the Indians to the King and Queen of Spain I have laid aside my lance, bow J and shield . . . I have heard thai you intend to settle us on a reservation near the mountains. I don ' t want to set- lie. I love to roam over the prairies. There I feel free and happy, but when we settle down we grow pale and die. I have laid aside my lance, bow, and shield, and yet I feel safe in your presence ... A long time ago this land belonged to our fathers; but when I go up to the river I see camps of soldiers cui down my timber; they kill my buffalo; and when I see that, my heart feels like bursting. Coach Ed Bruce was beginning his 12th year of coaching, but his first at Gardendale. Early indications showed the Rockets to be small, slow, and inexperienced in most of the skill positions. Hard work, sweat, and tears were the instant prerequisites to overcome the deficiencies that were obvious. Dora came to Rocket Stadium to be the first to test the young Maroons. Bigger and much faster, Dora could muster only 8 first downs for the night and most of those came on a drive that covered 85 yards just before the end of the first half. The Rockets clawed bat- tled, fought, scratched and won their first game 6-0, on a Mike Adams ' quarterback sneak in the 4th quarter. Bob Jordan was a standout on both offense and defense. The obvious lack of size and speed 105 was very evident the next week against Tarrant. Tarrant brought to Rocket Stadium a very large senior ball team . They dominated the game and won 21- 0. 106 Jordan, Hewitt, and Fultondale games all ended in defeat for the Rockets. The Jordan game was close with Gardendale winning all the statis- tics except the scoreboard. At half- time the Rockets had 13 first downs to Jordan ' s one, but were behind 13-12. The Rockets went the length of the field (83 yds.) in a minute and 5 sec- onds and scored, but the try for 2 points failed. Thus the second bitter loss of the young season had happened. Jordan had won 26-24. Against Hewitt at Husky Stadium the Rockets once again were outclassed due to size and speed, but out of this game emerged a young sophomore named Harrison who would have to carry the offensive load after a broken leg stopped Bob Jordan, the team ' s leading rusher. Hewitt blasted the Rockets 36-0. The fourth game found the Rockets at Fultondale, a team that was undc- 107 108 feated and that was looking for its first win over Gardendale. The young Rockets played their best game of the season to that point, but costly mis- takes lost them their fourth game in a row 13-6. Losing four and winning only one in the first half of the season was bad enough, but going to Cullman for the sixth contest piled insult upon injury. The Rockets worked hard that week preparing for the Bearcats. But Cull- man was confident that the game was theirs, but at half time the score was 0- 0. The second half was all Garden- dale, as they drove 78 and 80 yards for scores to win 13-0. Barry Harrison and Mike Adams did the scoring. The win was one of the biggest in the school ' s history and came when the Rockets needed it most. Mike Reithmaier was chosen Player of the Week in the Post Herald for his efforts in the game . Homecoming was next, with Pleas- ant Grove providing the entertain- ment. The Rockets won 19-8, winning 2 in a row and putting their season at 3 and 4. For his play in the homecoming game against Pleasant Grove, Jeff Dubose was chosen by the Post Herald as their Player of the Week . Brookwood came into Rocket sta- dium the next week, and the Rockets made it 3 in a row downing Brookwood 16-15 in a thriller and evening their season at 4 and 4 . Leeds was next. Gardendale played well, but could not contain Leed ' s great running back, Joe Lockhart, who scored 4 touchdowns. On the opening kickoff Barry Harrison raced 86 yards for a touchdown, but it was called back because of a clip up field. Leeds won 27-12. The final game of the season saw the Rockets travel to Pinson Valley. The Rockets scored first with Randy Erwin going over from the three, but it was Pinson Valley the rest of the night as Jeff Hodge, Valley ' s fine quarterback, mixed passes and runs to demolish Gar- dendale 41-7. 109 The Gardendale Basketball Team began the season by winning its own Invitational Tournament, defeating Pinson Valley and Midfield for first place honors. The team looked good, but a combination of 4- A schools and a lost spark of enthusiasm, hustle, and desire caused the Rockets to have problems . Basketball is a game of combina- tions. Coach Standridge began dili- gently searching for the right ones. Some nights hustle could have made the difference; at other times it was rebounding, foul shooting, lay-ups, tougher defense or a combination of all of these . Losing by one , two , or three points, the team and the season were on the verge of disaster. Hard work in practice began to evolve a group of young men who wanted to play; Jerry Smith, a 10th grader; David Battles, 11th grader; Mike Adams, an 11th grader; Marvin Allen, an 11th grader; Gary Allen, a 10th grader; and Pat Keedy, the only senior who was in the starting rotation. They worked at perfecting what Coach Standridge wanted done, and good things began to happen . VARSITY BASKETBALL Season Record Gardendale Inv . David Battles and Pat Keedy began to lead the team with rebounds. Hustle became the battle cry, and winning games became the results. The season that was on the verge of giving Coach Standridge the worst one he had ever had in fifteen years of coaching began to improve. Beating Corner at Corner and Banks and Erwin at Erwin moved the wins to 13 and the losses to 11. All of these teams had beaten the Rockets earlier in the sea- son. So the cream had finally risen to the top, and class ruled the day. Tar- rant remained the lone team left to beat, and they, too, had beaten the young Rockets earlier in the season. But again Tarrant proved too tough, and with that loss, the Rockets ended the season with 13 wins and 12 losses. in 112 }ms B 4 t d ► y wnsus m iJH 113 J 114 I ■gig E ' S ' tt«n not ., ■H k tf ST 2 IfllfV ml 115 The Varsity Wrestling Team 116 The 1975-1976 wrestling season began with problems. On the first day of practice it was discovered that the defending 3- A State Champions had only thirteen team members turning out for practice . This meant that in each match in which they competed the Rockets would begin with an 18 point deficit in their team scoring . The season opener was a trip to Huntsville High School. Led by Randy Ervin ' s first period pin, the Rockets were victorious, winning with a final score of 33-27. Next came the Northeast Alabama 117 Invitational Tournament. Paced by first finishes by Steve Mordecai and Gary Erwin , the Rockets placed fifth in a field of twenty-four teams at the Northeast Tournament. The following week found the Rock- ets at Tarrant. First period pins by Bennet Lipkin, Steve Mordecai, Randy Erwin, and Gary Erwin scored another team victory 36-35. Challenge for the Rocket wrestlers came next in the form of a 4-A team, Berry High School. In spite of the fact that the Rocket team began the match with an 18 point forfeit, they bowed to Berry with a score of only 33-25. But they outscored Berry in the matches wrestled . A new 3- A power Pinson Valley was their next opponent . The dramatic outcome in scoring, 36-36, came when all nine matches ended in pins, six of these by the Rockets . The following Monday found a pow- erful Phillips team at Gardendale . The home team gave an outstanding per- formance, led by Lipkin, Weems, and the Erwin brothers. But due to three forfeits and Phillips ' strength in the upper weight classes, the Rockets were defeated 41-30. The Rockets next took on a might task. They were invited to the Erwin Invitational Tournament, where they were the only 3-A team in a field of 4- A opponents. Gardendale claimed a .m ■■« l t k.«H iff] i it. - ii n ' f s in m jgr ' ' ■v g 3i s s 118 strong 4th place finish in this tourna- ment, with first place positions won by Steve Mordecai and Randy Erwin, and a second place win by Gary Erwin. Another honor came when Steve Mor- decai was voted the Outstanding Wres- tler of this tournament. This brought the young team to a much needed Christmas break, with a compiled record of 2-2-1. Following the short break, Oxford came to Gardendale. Led by Bennett Lipkin, the Rockets pushed their record to3-2-l. Deshler was next on the schedule. History repeated itself as the Rockets were again forced to forfeit 18 team points before ever beginning competi- tion. This cost them dearly, as they lost to a strong Deshler team 33-30. Competition against Fairfield again gave the Rockets a chance to push their record above 500. Pins in the first period by Roger Johnson , Randy Erwin , 119 and Gary Erwin gave the team a 45-18 win. Next came Fultondale. Led by an Alan Otis pin and an outstanding team performance overall, the Rockets scored an impressive 54-13 victory. Adding to this an impressive 46-18 victory over McAdory, the record standings rose to 6-3-1. This took Gar- dendale to the Pinson Invitational Tournament. The Pinson tournament was the most outstanding Rocket performance for the 1975-76 season. First place finishes were achieved by Steve Mordecai, Bennet Lipkin, Mark Weems, Randy Erwin, Gary Erwin, and Alan Otis. Randy Erwin was voted Outstanding Wrestler and the Rockets placed third in the tournament . 120 However, lei-down losses to Gun- tersville, 4- A power Vesiavia, and 4- A power Lee followed. Going into the Gardendale Invita- tional Tournament, our record was 6- 6-1. In this tournament another strong showing placed the Rockets in second place. Randy Erwin was honored as the Outstanding Wrestler of the meet. The final match was against Huey- town. The Rockets greatly needed this match for a winning season. Once again they were victorious. Led by Gary Erwin ' s 37 second pin, the Rock- ets ended the season 7-6-1 with a 33- 29 victory . 121 BASEBALL 1975 122 M 1 a ■123 SEASON RECORD GHS OPP. GHS OPP. The Rockets tied with Warrior High School in County league play. To add a flavor of well-roundedness, the Rockets were voted the Sportsmanship Trophy at the County Tournament. Berry High School over-powered Gardendale to win second place in State District Competition, which was held November 8, 1975, at Jefferson State Junior College. It was a close match (14-16; 15-13; 15-13) that knocked the Rockets out of the finals. But the happy Rockets ended the season on a happy note when junior Theresa Suatton won an All-Star trophy for her outstanding play. 129 Gymnastic Team Joarm Jones Bonnie Huey Anita Whitlock Sherry Worsham Willetta Mays Ritzie Key Donna Deason Cheryl Deason Mrs. Meadows Jada Bell Lisa Whitten Sherry Worsham 1st place - Beginning Mat Tumbling Cheryl Deason - 5th place Golf Team Greg Brown David Fetner Chris Clark Coach Franks Mike Gray Randy Godwin 130 JUNIOR SPORTS Freshman Cheerleaders Sherry Fines Anita Whitlock Susan Burrow Debbie Thrasher Joann Jones Jada Bell Pat Whitlock Renee Benson Sherry W or sham Carol Hand 132 Freshman Football B-Team Basketball Coach Davidson Nathaniel Boone Kenneth Holmes Mark Wolfe Kirk Creel Phil Russell Melvin Nation Kelvin Nation Maurice Bailey Herman Jones 133 9th GRADE BASKETBALL Kenneth Means, Cully Kieth, Greg Light, Gary Graham, Clarence Jones, Mark Cornelious, Mike Graves 8th GRADE Terry Mordecai, Mike Brasher, Taylor Bragg, Terrell Bitten, Roderick Shelby, Andre Boone, Bruce Von Hagel, George Yeldell, Greg Graves, Chris Hand 134 Archery Team Cindy England Pam Brasher Mrs. Baylor Glenda Dial Karen Bennei Kelly Ambrose Robin Bell Cindy Stone Freshman Wrestling 135 Fea tures , , l;; ; 1 MISS RENDEZVOUS Jennifer Perrymon •|! w ' - ' h lUBKa Missy Ray First Alternate ' ■■JflP Susan Goodwin Second Alternate tfffl ■' I ■■. 1 wBBB Lynda Denny Third Alternate Karen Wiginton Fourth Alternate k - fr . ,- « r J i J , - |  .,._ KIM PURVIS MISS CONGENIALITY — . -r 5 fl : . .
