We strive in languages to enrich the students cul- turally. We hope that when our students complete two years of a language it will be a second language and not a foreign language. History Department A general philosophy of social studies should be to teach and alert our students to the greatness of their heritage, including their state, regional and national heritage. To instill in our students not only a love of this heritage but a desire to preserve and maintain this heritage for those generations to come . Our students should be given a thorough knowledge of the background and sources of their heritage including the ideas of freedom and democracy upon which our way of life is based. With this knowledge of their cultural, ec- onomic, social, and political heritage we hope our students will be able to take their places in our modern advancing society and to preserve our democratic, free enterprise system of government and not to deny themselves and their descendents the unalienable rights guaranteed by our forefathers in the Bill of Rights of our Constitution. Many thought that a 5-5 season would be a commendable record for the 1968 season, but an always optimistic coach and team thought that a 7-3 or 8-2 season was possible, providing the team got the breaks and avoided injuries. Sucti was not the case, and the Rockets ended the season with a 4-6 record . The Rockets scored convincing, although not spectacular wins against Tarrant 7-0, at Tarrant, Jordan 19-6 and Hewit 19-13 at Gardendale. The last win, at homecoming, was perhaps the most spectacular in Rocket football history, a 20-19 come- from- behind thriller over the Warrior Indians. But in the fifth game against Mt. Brook, Gardendale was stopped at great cost. Quarterback Chuckie Moore was injured near the start of the third quarter and a trend began that doomed the team to its losing season. At Shades Valley, Gardendale started junior Terrel Morgan at quarterback but lost the services of tight end Terry Stephens for the next two games. (continued) First Victory Over Tarrant 115 With a new quarterback at the helm, and playing two of the top teams in the county, Gardendale lost to Valley 20-0 and Erwin 21-0. The llueytown game saw the Rockets sputtering offense come to life while losing. 20-13. At this point things began to look up. Moore was nearly ready to go, the offense had gathered itself together around Morgan and the team ' s spirit was higher than ever. Then tragedy struck. Junior center Tommy Smith injured his slioulder in practice and was lost for the rest of the season. Junior tailback Mike Myers, injured in the Hueytown game, was out for the upcoming tilt with Minor. (continued) Injuries Slow Rocket Offense 116 Now I ' ll but lie down and bleed awhile, then I ' ll rise and fight again. SHAKESPEARE 17 Minor came to Rocket Field to face the patched up IRockets, and with two starters out and Stephens and Moore still hobbling badly, the Tigers outslugged Gardendale 20-13. Then came the Phillips game. In the rugged, proud history of Rocket football, no group of men could possibly have given more of themselves than did the tattered remnants of this 1968 team. Be- sides Moore, Smith, Myers, and Stephens out or still partially hurt, Senior end Don Lyons was on crutches with a knee injury for the last game of the season. (continued) Chuckie gets one away for a reception by Morgan. 118 This game proved that Coach Roy Holsomback is a man possessed with the ability to get more of liis men than they have within them. A rugged Rocket defense halted one of the city ' s leading rushing offenses, but the injuries to 5 start- ers let the Red Raiders escape with a hard fought 7-6 win. Coach is optimistic that next year will be a different story. The reason for this is the performance throughout the season of tlie juniors, sophomores, and the B and Fresh- man Teams. But Coach Holdsomback will surely feel the loss of sucti people as Alfred Hallmark, Robert Thomas, Jimmy Gober, Johnny Ray, Dwight Gary, Chuckie Moore, Larry Cook- sie, Don Lyons, Terry Stephens, Eddie Deason, Mike Johnson, and Eric Pollard. For many of these men, this was their third season on the varsity, and they can be proud of their performance over the years. Coach Wyatt watches backfield movements. E. The way to win, ttie only way to win. This is the type basketball coach Ronnie Cliannell brought to Garden- dale two years ago and this, liis tliird season, was no different. Defense, That was tlie key. A gambling, liustling. Rocket defense. And when it faltered, a potent, high scoring, offense took over. In a tournament that boasted 8 of the top city and county teams, Gardendale finished a highly re- spectable fourth. After the Phillips tournament only a 6 point loss to Hewit kept Gardendale out of the County Classic. Rocket basketball is all of the above but it ' s that little something else that makes roundball at Garden- dale High School something special. It ' s sophomore Kenny Brown transferring from Phillips, planning on playing B team, and ending up starting at guard for the varsity. 125 It ' s Cliuckie Moore recovering from a shoulder injury suffered in football to lead the Rockets in scoring. It ' s straight- A students Steve Schmitt and Mike Vines proving that you can study and play basketball as well. It ' s Gary Pate, trying for three years and still try- ing. It ' s Eric Pollard, Phillip Sample, Dwight Gray, and Terry Garner coming from the football field to give it all they had on the basketball court. It ' s Jerry Collar, Marty Hawkins, Robert Crumpton and others gutting it through pre-season. It ' s twelve men, working with Coach Channell to produce some of the finest basketball around. This is Rocket Basketball. 126 127 COACH LAEIRY WYATT e1 %.. l f ■ iws0 The 1969 season announced Gardendale ' s arrival as a force to be reckoned with in Jefferson County baseball cir cles. A varsity wliicli had retained every member from the previous year, surprised the county circuit by finishing with a strong 7 and 2 record. Finishing second in the Northern Division, tlie Rockets were involved in the past season playoffs, being stopped by the high ranked Woddlawn Col- onels 2 to 1 . The basis for this surprising strong sliowing was provided by Bob Wells, who pitched a no-hitter and was the first Gardendale representative to appear in the East- West All- Star Game, and who was named to the All-Star squad along with Jim- my Hand, Eddie McKinny, Chuckie Moore, and Billy Frew. lO ' WM : • ««■« Left to Right - STANDING: Dwlght Gray, Chuckie Moore, Tommy Morton, Tommy Smith, Phillip Samples, Hank Belcher, Steven Schmidt, Glenn Cargo. A school year made unique by a kaleidoscope of people, events, ideas and attitudes; a composite whose parts fitted smoothly or grudgingly, but somehow, it always fit. The atmosphere of our community was determined by its members. When we were high, we were very, very, high; but when we were low. brother, we were low. Whether in the midst of a crowd or by ourselves, we became aggressively involved with our surroundings - each coping with it according to his own needs and selfish desires. Some of us became chameleons: altering our every facet to fit the moment; some strived for integrity of character; others sought security in vanity; while still a lucky few developed values in true perspective. The irony of the whole year was that somewhere, lurking in the shadows, was a future for us all. 1 f, -i 1 ' ° ks ■ iBi li B ■■KtAj HII HbC 1 H ' ' • W: l K.
