Hoping to bring about a lasting interest in history, to enhance students' ability to comprehend a series of suc- cessive events, and to improve the ability to visualize clearly overt acts of the historical scene, the department emphasized vocabulary terms, information concerning important persons, places, and dates in history, the ability to use books, skills in picture and map inter- pretation, and the actual making of maps.
