Why? Wihy not? The neu svhool had no hells or clocks. There mere also no driver training ears or typexsriters. That just made typewriting more of a challenge and driver training mueh safer than ever before. For the hrst few months it was necessary to watch out for falling workmen. met paint and the hazards of a primitive wooden hridge at the main entranee. As a result of losing many people hehind the auditorium. searf-li parties were organized liy Nlr. Larson. our assistanl principal. Vive were to be the first graduating elass from the beautiful, new modern building. We should be proud of ourselves that we finally made it despite such obstacles as deafening radiators, no senior lounge. and no gym until May tpoor girlslt. Not only were we confronted with a new school, but also with a new principal. our good friend from former detention days, Mr. Winfield S. Thompson. On September 12. the Honor Society sponsored a highly successful f'College Night" at which Carden City alumni disillusioned us in our high hopes of simply taking Yale and Vassar by storm. September 16 welcomed home our four American Field Service students. Carolyn Nygren tFinlandl. Dottie Martin. George Will and Dan Johnson tCermanyl. All told. they seemed to have had quite a liberal international education and a lot of fun. Also under the A. F. S. program we were proud to welcome as members of our senior class two foreign-exchange students. Lous Croen from Holland and Ray Lampert from Luxembourg. On October 10. in an impressive outdoor cere- mony. the cornerstone of the school was to be laid. Due to circumstances. it wasn't. However. there were quite a few nice speeches. and it was a lovely day. Can any of you forget "Chief" at the student entrance. auctioning off the debris collected by the Lost and Found? Also in October. eerie rumors about an original P. T. A. scholarship show began to seep under the door of Mr. War- rineris creative writing class. This year Back-to-school Night was changed a bit. Parents were invited to an Open House on November 7. and with the help of maps anc friendly SCH's had a chance to see the school. The first formal assembly in our new school was held in the library tthe auditorium had no floor. much less seatsl for the junior class. and it featured speeches by the American Field Service exchange students. Mr. Vifallace li. Graham must have been over joyed when the Magazine Drive. closing or, November 18. netted more than any former drive. a total of 86809. A unique feature was the fact that the senior class sold more than any other class. Face it. we were broke! The entire school enthusiastically welcomed back the Colgate Thirteen. who brought down the cafeteria tthe auditorium still had no floor. much less seatsi with the MHawaiian War Chant." For months the cry was f'Heni-heni-lalu "Cina Lollibrigida goes for Sheldon." and so did the senior class on November 23 at the first dance of the year. sponsored by the seniors and held in a beautifully decorated cafeteria. When Sheldon, owing to uncontrollable difficulties. was unable to appear as the class mascot, Shorty obligingly came instead. What an appropriate 78 mascot for our class!! 6 Though December had only fifteen school days. everyone was extremely busy. especially the home-ec classes. Those girls seemed to have 'igone ape." They made cookies continuously. Un December l. members of the creative writing and world lit classes. accompanied by Messrs. Wardner and Warriner. took a melodi- ous bus trip to New York City. The team chalked up a record of 5 wins. 2 losses. and l tie. The line was rough and heavy, but its main asset was its tremendous speed. The backheld had skill and speed if not sufhcient experience. The opening game took place at Stratford Field where the Trojans unveiled a pony backfield that had C. C. rooters gasping. Led by two pint-sized sophomores, Dick LaRocca and Dick Whit- field, and a flashy junior, Bob Pirrmann, Carden City overwhelmed Port Washington 24-0. Although few realized it, an ominous note was struck when co-captain Pete Quesenberry and Dick Mclnerny, our first string ends, were carried from the field with injuries. Quesenberry was through for the season, and Mclnerny's knee never fully responded to treatment. The following week the Trojans traveled to South Side where they eked out a 6-0 victory. Linebacker Mike Allan made a jarring tackle of a South Side back on Carden Cityis 5-yard line. and Roh Swanson moved up from his halfback position to scoop up the ball and scamper 95 yards for the Trojans' six points. The third game of the season took place at Oceanside in the mud. The Sailors, who succeeded the Trojans as Double A champs, downed the Carden City eleven 6-0. The next encounter saw the Maroon and Gray beat Hicksville 13-6. Again the sophomores led the way as Dick LaRocca scored on a line plunge in the first quar- ter. Next the Trojans fought to a 7-7 deadlock with Great Neck. Carden City's score came in the third quarter on a drive downfield. Laftocca plunged over for the touch- down, and Whitfield's running attempt for the extra point was good. In the next game, Garden City defeated West Hempstead. The Trojans scored first on a beautiful 80-yard drive. Harry Miller. star tackle. was injured and was out for the remainder of the season. Carden City won by a 12-6 score. The traditional Carden City-Manhasset game rolled around on the 5th of Novem- ber. A heavy rain had fallen the night before, making the field a quagmire. The field was apparently to the Trojanis liking. for the first half was all Carden City. Whitfield ran brilliantly and scored C. Cfs first touchdown. Mike Allan. shouldering all the power running due to an injury to Dick La Rocca. ground out small yardage as the Trojans marched to lVlanhasset's 15-yard line. At this point. a Carden City fumble was picked up by a Manhasset lineman, who raced 85 yards for a touchdown. The score at the half was 7-6 Trojans. The second half saw the heavier and more experienced Manhasset team score early in the fourth quarter against a tired but game Carden City eleven. Taking the ensuing kickoff, the Trojans. led by the elusive running of Bob Pirrmann, marched the length of the field to the Manhasset 15. Misfortune hit again as the slippery ball was fumbled to end the threat and. in effect, the game. The final game. against Roslyn. was anti-climactic with C. C. winning easily 19-12. The highlights were Wfally Berger's terrific running. his only touchdown as a var- sity back, and Dan Kelliher's first catch of a forward pass and his only varsity touchdown. Outstanding play by seniors Tom Kirby, Vic Maxwell, Dan Kelliher, Dick Mc- lnerny, John Evans, Bob Swanson.
