L3 s8lll81'1 EBI' THE LA SALLE YEAR is a period of time set aside by the Christian Brothers to honor their founder. The year extended from May 24, I95O, +o November 2I, I95I. These dates were chosen because on May 24 the order celebrated the Golden Jubilee of the canonizafion of Saint John Baptist de La Salle. November 2I is 'the I60'rh anniver- sity of the occasion on which S+. La Salle and two of his Brothers vowed to live on bread and water rather than give up 'rhe worlr of the Christian education of the poor. Just prior to the opening of 'the La Sallian Year, May I5, l950, our Holy Father Pope Pius XII issued a le++er declaring S+. John Baptist de La Salle patron of all teachers of either sex, whether clerical or lay. Foundation Day Commemoraiing 'rhe sixty-second anniver- sary of the 'foundation of fhe Dominican Con- grega+ion of Sain+ Thomas Aquinas, the Garces student body on October 24 attended rhe first High Mass sung on the campus. Mass was beautifully sung by the Senior Glee Club. This anniversary commemora+ed the day. sixty-'rwo years ago, when 'rhree Sisters came from New Jersey 'ro esfablish a new mother- house in Tacoma, Washington. Since fhen the Congrega+ion has increased so thai' i+ now includes about I75 Sisters who are teach- ing in schools in California and Washingfon. The feast of Saint Thomas Aquinas, March 7, marked the enrollment of most of 'the stu- dent body in the Confraternify of 'the Angelic Warfare, 'the purpose of which is fo preserve purify in youth.
