However, to some pupils it is work accompanied by drudgery. The prepar- ation of daily lesson assignments, no' doubt, requires time and effort, and every pupil must put aside many pleasures in order to do his school work well. One who works all the time makes work drudgery. On the other hand, school attendance must be regarded in the light of learning lessons of self-control and the mastery of certain skills which are needed for success in after- school years. Many boys and girls all over the world are denied the advantages of good schools. Among these young folk are those who would be grateful for the guarantee of four years of training at the small cost you are receiv ing your education. Since many of you will end your formal education upon graduation from high school, or even before that time, you are urged to take advantage of every day's op portunity for self-improvement as the day presents it- self. Among these twenty-four, there are twelve who, under the supervision of Mrs. nershel Lambert, started out togeth- er in the first grade eleven long years ago. These are: Dan Janica, Jimmy Uhytka, Innocence Haioveky, Dorothy Husak Louis Yatocha, Johnny Padilla, Josephine Trecna, Ray Beth Fowler, Gene Ratliff, Joe Tristan, Allen Pratka, and Isador Tristan. The next year there was no addition to the class. We were instructed by Mrs. Emilia Jordan who gave us our start in Arithmetic. Andrew Calaway, coming from Crescent, entered the third Erade with us and was soon followed by Helen Goff who had previously attended school in Port Lavaca. Mrs. Head was over us that year, really showing us the path in theme writing. The following year, all were made joyous on the enter- ing of Marilyn HShortyN Cook. Miss Anna Ross was our teacher that happy year. The whole class was very disappointed the next year when not a soul entered our class. Miss Daisy janica. now Mrs. James Strauss, made up for most of the disappointment however by showing us a good time and also keeping us busy. The next year, under the direction of Mrs. Leonard Ross, the class was made haDDY. or whatever you wish to say, on the entering of two more girls. These two were Dorthy Hicks and Adah Mae HPoochien Swank. The next year showed an even record with one boy fat lastl entering and the departing of a lass fno commentlg The boy being Wesley Yoas and the girl Adah Mae. This year, since it was our last in Grammar School, Kept our able sponsor, Miss Nell Harwood, very busy. Miss Harwood, with the helv of Mrs. Frueh, planned the exercises for our graduation into High School very splendidly. Our misery the next year, as Fish, was brightened when jerry Williams fformerly from Austinl and Elgin Vyvial were welcomed into the class. Mrs. C.D. Now entering our Senior year. the class. sponsored oy Mrs. Creighton Wood and Mrs. Russel Whitmire. welcomed two more pupils into the class: Gerry Weaver and Willie Novak. These were the last additions to our class. On the morning of September 17, the Seniors were bursting with excitement. The Senior rings had arrived. Ne were very glad to get them early in the year so they could De worn throughout the entire year. Tinis being our last year, we are very proud of the rings oe 011138 ttxey wi.ll always oe a reminder of the times in Ganado digh. According to custom, we Seniors took over tue selling of refreshments at the footoall games which netted us quite a tidy sum for the Senior Trip, a trip we will remember as the highlight of the year we enjoyed most in our high school C3.I'8e1'. 4 On March 31, the Senior Class sponsored an act put on by Montague, the magician, and his assistant. The act turned out very well and furnished a lot of fun and laughs to a great number of people. ' The Senior Play, due to the fine coaching of Mrs. Wood and Mrs. Whitmire, turned out to oe a great success- Now as we have looked back on our years at Ganado nigh we are proud of the standard that we have upheld. We pass this standard, with the assurance that it will be upheld with the utmost care, to tne Senior Class of 1948. 1 Fx ,r. I ,1 W ,F ' Q rg 6745012 'I3 T20 T3-I-I ECY Let us gaze ten years into the future upon the little village of Seniors, '47. As we get off the train at the station, there is none other than that slap-happy Andrew Salaway. He is now a railroad engineer. Pausing to talk co him a few minutes, we are told that he has just received a letter from Ray Beth, now the Mrs. Louis Matocha of Hollywood. saying that she talked to Dorothy Husak, the personal secretary if Jimmy Chytka, a famous movie producer. We understand that these two see tuite a lot of each other after business hours. Why, if I'm not mistaken, there is Alois: m'r. Peters to you, the justice of Peace. marrying that gay and giddy couple Marilyn Cook and Dan Janica. Why ten years ago who would have ever dreamed that these kids would have made that very important step together? But then anything is possible with the Seniors of '47. As we stroll on down the streets, there is Dr. J.L. Williams hanging up his shingle beginning his practice of medicine. By the way, he is still waiting on that girl from T.S.C.W. It seems that the high school superintendent, Gene Qatliff, was very happy gn starting this year of teaching in, at last, the new school. Of course, you knew that Vesley Yoas was the grade school princi- pal and Innocence Hajovsky is the coach? Which reminds me that Joe Tristan and Johnnie Padilla, co-owners of the bakery, tell us that Isidore Tristan is playing professional football in the East. As Professor Ratliff, still a bachelor, shows us through the new school building, whom do we run into except Helen Goff, that is, Mrs. Dierschke, bringing one of her three children, Walter plans on coming home for this Jr., to school. She tells us that Elgin Vyuial, the town's drug- gist, talked to Josephine Trcka in nurses training in San-An- tonio, over the phone, and she party planned in Gerry WeaUer'S leading laboratory technicians said she was coming home for the honor. Ada Mae Swank, one of the in dumole Office at Houston also great reunion of the Seniors of '47, Gerry Weaver, in whose honor the party is being given, has just returned from a tour after playing her violin in concerts all over France. The party is to be in El Campo at the home of Mrs. Glaze, formerly Dorothy Hicks. Her private secretary, Miss Georgia Wells, is planning the party. It's none of our ousiness, of course, but we understand that she and Allen Prataa plan on announcing their engagement at the party. Willie Novak, a pros- perous farmer, plans on attending the party, also. 1,5 - .1 1. . 1 -Y: YT I 512 'I' . 7 jg gaw ,Q ,. 555 -uf y fx I, v- 'lg' Q: ' .l I . I I I I I . I I I I 'jf . The team was one of the fighting- est in the district and forced their opponents to fight for every yard. The team was under the capable coaching of A. H. Cheek, a graduate of Texas Tech. Three Indians earned ALL-DISTRI3T HONORS. They were Isidor Tristan, Back: jimmy Chytka, Guard: and Andrew Calaway, Tackle. Co-Captains for 1946 were:AndrewCalaway and Jerry Williams.
