Gamewe11's Band adds variety, enthusiasm, and color to the football games. The band is one of the most ardent supporters of the team. tb Coaches display typical positions while study- ing the team's progress. A highlight of the halftime ceremonies of the Granite Fall- Gamewell football game was the crowning of the Homecoming Queen. Players engage in pre-game warmup. Crowe carries the ball. CHAHENBE ,ff Nagy 'usd Mt, A ,ffw K' Q i x ,KM Lf DEDICATION In the making of a good high school, there are many areas for improvement and expansion. In these changes many people play an important role. Perhaps the most important role is played by those who set high goals and objectives and strive to attain them. Gamewell has been fortunate in having one such person who not only set high goals but also worked diligently to see that the goals became realities. That person, Coach Bill Link, has helped Gamewell's football team to move from the six- to the eleven-man bracket. Since he came to Gamewell in 1955, the school has been a continuous improvement in the athletic program. Link-coached football teams have maintained a total won- lost record of 31 -2, winning two confer- ence titles and a state championship. Coach Link, former gridiron star, was selected "Coach of the Year" for the 1959-'60 football s eason by the other mentors in the District Seven Southern C onfe r enc e for his capable direction of the Blue Devils. Always a sports enthusiast, Coach Link be- gan his football career at Lenoir High School in 1942. Playing three years, he excelled in foot- ball and was named most valuable player during the 1945 season. After graduatingfrom high school, he joined the United States Air Force, where he played two years of service football, proving to be a valuable asset to the Eighth Air Force Bombers. Coach Link entered Wake Forest College in 1949, where he majored in physical education. He displayed unusual prowess on the gridiron and was selected on the No. 1 All-State team and on the second All-Southern Conference eleven in 1951. He also received honorable mention for All- American. Aftera short stay with the Washington Red- skins, C oac h Link entered the teaching and coaching profession in 1954. His first teaching position was at Cherryville, North Carolina, he later taught at Sawmills, North Carolina. This 1960 edition of the "Devil's Diary" is dedicated to William Caldwell Link, coach since 1955, in recognition of his splendid record. In this dedication we wish to reflect our deep and sincere appreciation of his singular devotion to and untiring efforts in behalf of our beloved school. We, as benefactors, are grateful for his wise counsel, able leadership, impartial judg- ment, and tempered discipline. We hail you, Coach Link, and pledge you our loyalty.
