Being together day after day we found we had many friends, and we learned very soon how to get along with them in work and play. As we advanced into grammar grades, we realized there was harder work ahead of us. There were more subjects for us which required more study, however, to make everything brighter there were par- ties and school activities, that we all had a chance to participate in. We played our iirst basketball games in the eighth grade and had the privilege of going on a camp- ing trip to Carolina Hemlock, which was enjoyed by all. We began our high school days in the fall of 1952. Several of the original number had dropped out, but we still had a nice group of 78. It took us a little while to get adjusted to the new ways and ideas as a Freshman, but soon we fell into step and began our climb upward. Everyone felt they were progressing a step nearer the top. Soonafter we got started in this year, all of our hearts were saddened when trag- edy struck and brought death to one of our best-loved classmates, Joanne Campbell. It was that dreaded disease, polio. We missed her very much, but we knew we had to press on feeling lucky to be spared of this disease during the epidemic. We became Sophomores in 1953. Again a few of our classmates dropped out, but we gained a new one, Shelby Cheek from Ap- palachian, who was welcomed by all. In March of that year we took a trip to Appa- lachian State Teachers College to see a Shakespearean play. There was also a camping trip for us. In our Junior year there were more activities for us. We elected our class of- ficers and later found ourselves practicing our Junior Play which was a big success. We also had the privileges of wearing our class sweaters and ordering our class rings during that year. The high light of that year was the night of our Junior-Sen- ior Banquet, which was probably the first formal for most of us. With all the excite- HI STORY ment we had a wonderful time. Several members of our class received honors in sports and being elected to the National Beta' Club. Inthe fall of 1955 we assembled again with more eagerness and determination than ever, for this was the year we had a- waited so long. We were happy and proud to be called seniors and having for our homeroom teachers, Miss Goodman and Mr. Holman. At the beginning of the year we elected members of our class whowere to serve as leaders for our various activ- ities. The class officers were: President, Robert Hendrix, Vice President, Carolyn Hovisg Secretary, Joyce Kincaid, Treasur- er: Macon Holloway. The annual staff con- sisted of: Editor-in-chief, Carolene Mc- Call, Assistant Editor-in-chief, Flora Mae McCall, Business Manager, Louise Ollisg Literary Editor, Carolyn Hovisg Art Edi- tors, Joyce Kincaid and Nixon Williams, Sports Editor, Macon Holloway. Our Senior year has been filled with many thrilling events and hard work. Many nights were spent by the Annual Staff in effort to produce a publication which would be enjoyable to all. The store workers un- der the directorship of Barbara Coffey and Macon Holloway got busy in order to raise money for our Washington trip--which we are all looking forward to. We selected our calling :ards and invitations, measur- ed for our caps and gowns, and chose our m a s c ot s . A Thanksgiving Banquet was givenNovember 22, honoring our parents. We have had several enjoyable parties. Three of our classmates got married this year, but we are proud they are still here to graduate with us making a total of forty-two. As we depart, we want to say we deep- ly appreciate everything that has been done for us. We want to thank our parents and all of our teachers who, with love and pa- tience have given us guidance and inspi- ration to carry on. It is through them that we have reached another milestone in life. As we choose our vocation, may it be one that will be best for us and our surround- ings. Flora Mae Mc Call, Historian CLASS PROPHECY During my Fourth of July vaca- tionfrom Broyhill's I flew to Miami, Florida. At the Charlotte Municipal Airportlmet an old classmate, Lou- ise Branch, who was on her way to Jacksonville, Florida. We went on the same plane. After the take-off we started talking about ou r old school days. She told me that both she and Flora Mae McCall were working as secretaries for the Kent- Coffey Furniture Company in Lenoir. After we were settled, the pilot came back to say hello to everyone. Who should it be but our old classmate, Larry Ward, now a pilot for East- ern Airlines. We asked him where his buddy, Davis Coffey, was and he said that he was a lieutenant in the Air Force. After a while we turned on our portable radio. We turned the dial to WBT Charlotte and guess who the announcer was? None other than Robert Chandler. He was Master of Ceremonies of a popular tunes pro- gram. He played next a recent Cap- itol release by the Melody Three Trio, composed of Carl Story, Jr., Carolyn Hovis, Louise Ollis, and pianist, Carolene McCall. Wayne Kincaid also entered the musical field. Since his recent marriage to Minnie Pearl he has obtained a job on the "Grand Ole Opry". I told Louise that Martha Brakefield also took up music. She is pianist for the Oak Ridge Quartet. Martha's girl friend, Shirley Earp, designs hats for Hedda Hopper. Also two more of Martha's old girl friends, Betty Campbell and Helen Robbins are inthe WAVES. Louise said that she had read in a newspaper that Ruth and Lois had gotten married. She also said that Shelby Cheek had married Jim Martin, but Ialready knew that. One of my girl friends, Peggy Houck, is anX-Ray technician at Caldwell Memorial Hospital. Sue Nichols is now the operator of Nick's Drive-In Grill on the Morganton Road. Mary Sue LeFevre is in a health resorttrying to meet the phy- sical requirements to enter West Point. Mary Moore is a telephone operator at the Bell Telephone of- fice in Lenoir. Linda Mikeal is run- ning a beauty shop on West Harper Avenue. Louise told me that Juanita Mikeal is a member of a profession- al Basketball Girls' team in Texas, James Clarke is now playing foot- ball forthe Duke Blue Devils. Wal- ter Benfield is now driving a truck for Newton Transfer Company. Two of our classmates are law officers --Clyde Warren being a State High- way Patrolmang Georgia Nell Bow- man is onthe Women's Police Force in Winston-Salem. Recently Isaw Kay Kincaid who is adramatics teacher at Gamewell. Robert Hendrix is a teacher at the University of North Carolina. I had read in the paper that Shirley Cau- dle was visiting her relatives in Lenoir. She isamodel in New York. Shirley's girl friend, Teny Webb, is assistant manager at Roses 5 8: 104' Store. Louise Conley isa sales lady in the Glamor Shop at Hickory. Grady Bumgarner owns and operates Bumgarner Lumber Company. He has sawmills in eastern Tennessee and in South Carolina. Nixon Will- iams, who is an engineer, is now drawing up plans for the paving of the Calico Road. Macon Holloway joined the French Foreign Legion. Pauline Cavin and Faye Helton are happily married. Barbara Coffey is married and living in California with her husband who is in the Air Force. Mary Ellen Coffey and Shir- ley Sanders are missionaries in South Africa. At this time the stewardess came back and instructed us to fas- ten our safety belts since we were nearing Jacksonville. Louise and I parted happily, after having high school memories refreshed in our minds.
