Q Wwpgk CLASS HISTORY As we turn back the pages of time to a bright September morning in 1929 we see a group of youngsters experiencing one of the red letter days of their lives their first day of school Because of the size of the class which numbered twenty seven it was divided into two sections each section attending school a half day Under Miss Bentons motherly guidance we learned the principles of cooperation and discipline The next fall found us first graders with Miss Gray to guide us Learning to write was our first ob jective during that year Thmgs we enjoyed were a Christmas program and several parties with the second grade We then crossed the hall and entered second grade for nine months with Miss Glorfeld During t is term we became what we thought advanced students in the three R s Next it was back mto the old building and third grade Miss Isbell took charge of this phase of our edu cation The multiplication tables were daily routme durmg those mne months Then on to fourth grade and it was up the creaky wooden steps to Miss Root s room There it was that we had our first experience in geography Following this Miss Paulsen guided us through fifth grade That year the history of Iowa found its way into our group of subjects welcomed us into sixth grade Another subject was added and we began our first struggle with ancient history Our next two years junior high school with Miss Franck and Miss Meyer as instructors were practically identical However we shall not forget the parties plays and banquets we enjoyed durmg those years Finally came high school the last leg of our education and with the presence of numerous new rural students we entered ninth grade as timid freshmen A royal welcome awaited us yhen we took our part in the much feared initiation we enjoyed it after all With the ending of each day it meant another step toward our goal Now as seniors we look back on our high school days with a longing that we might begm anew for we shall miss the extra curricular activ ities plays parties and other functions in which we have participated Of those twenty seven kindergartners who started school back in 1929 eleven have journeyed the en tire way together They are Laverne Blagof Adalme Ewoldt Robert jackes Russell Kahl Sherman Larson Eunice Lemke Minnie lda Lorenzen Harold Rathert Lois Roehlk Leslie Steen and jack Whitehouse Now we the graduating class of l942 are out on our own but whatever the future holds for us, we shall not forget our happy school days in Holstem . . . A farm theme was carried out with appropriate decorations. The welcome was given by Shirley Stoneking, president of the seventh grade and the response was given by Herman Lohafer, president of the eighth grade. Other speeches were given by Donna Miller, Charles Ewoldt and Joanne Hansen. Entertainment was furnished by a girls trio-Darlene Albers Mary Anne Kahl and Lorene Terryg a tap dance by Meredith Whitehouse and a cornet solo by Orville Friedrichsen. After a delicious dinner the group was taken to the picture show. McGuire SGCIAL EDEHTS Fm-JSHMAN INITIATION On September 5 1941 The Semors gave the new tenderfeet of Holstem Hugh a taste of the paddles ln nntnatmg them mto the Freshman class The Green Frosh were asked to wear shorts a coat on back wards a bathmg cap enough to make them very uncomfortable throughout the day After school the new Freshles were forced to a tugo war wnth a powerful stream from a fire hose as the lme whlch dlvlded the two teams A thorough soaltrng was had by all In the evemng amends were made by the senxors m glvlng a dance wxth freshmen as guests Re freshments were served and all felt the lnmatxon was a success SOPHOMORE PARTY The sophomore lass held their flrst party on October 14 ln the gymnasrum The dance was well attended mth nearly every soph brmgmg hrs or her guest Refreshments conslsted of lce cream bars JUNIOR PARTY The date of the junior party dance was December 15 lt too was held m the gym The dance was well attended and everyone had a grand time The money taken ln was salted away m the jumor treasurey for the annual jumor Semor banquet DEBATE DANCE The Debate Dance held on january 27 m the gym was the fxrst all school dance for 1942 lt was held for the purpose of ralsmg funds to send the Debate Club to the Brmdley Debate Tournament at Iowa State Teachers College ln Cedar Falls The muslc was furnished by recordmgs and refreshments of :ce cream cake and soft drunks were served SADIE HAWKINS DANCE The lxt ot the year was the junlors Sadre Hawkins dance held March 7 m the Holstem Hugh School gvmnasxum The gurls dld the mvrtmg entertamxng and bought thelr escorts an evemng snack whlch consxsted of pop lce cream cookies and cake Everyone had a grand tlme SOPHOMORE PARTY On March 27 the hrgh school gym was the scene of an :mportant event The Sophomores held their second dance and the basketball letters were awarded to the basketball squads at a speclal mter mrssnon All students out for athletucs were admltted free Refreshments consxsted of cup cakes and :ce cream The party was well attended and enjoyed by all JUNIOR SENIOR BANQUET When everyone had arrlved the senlors were forced to walk the plank mto the pxrate shlp built on the floor of the gym The entlre theme of the banquet centered around thls shlp whnch occupled all avanl able space ln the gymnasium ln the center was the cabln from which muslc flowed throughout the banquet Protrudmg from the cabin was the mast from whlch was flung the well known skull and bones The stage was decorated to represent Treasure Island wlth treasure chests hldden among the palms Overhead was a brlght blue sky with a few clouds Table decorations consisted of treasure chests for place cards small money bag for nut cups and bony skeletons were placed at each plate to make the scene complete Brown rum bottles contammg candles were pla ed about the tables to furnxsh the lx ht by wh.ch the dlnner was eaten MENU Tropxcal Treasures Roast of Parrot Meat Bahama lslands Mt Vesuvrus Seaweed Shxp of Dreams Brllows on the Pacxftc Rock of Gibralter Black Poison PROGRAM P lunder Eumce Lemke tToastmasterp I sles of Treasures Gene Asprey R omance tcornet soloj Laverne Blagof A n Escape jack Whntehouse T reason Mary Beth Porterfxeld S-ecret Hndeout Mr Waterbury - C . . , . . .
