Their escapada lasTed unTil January 2. They Toured such landmarks as The Empire STaTe Building, Radio CiTy Music Hall, The Lincoln CenTer for Per- forming ArTs, and Greenwich Village. The group also picked up some culTure on The EasT CoasT by viewing such pro- ducTions as 42nd STreeT Amadeus , and Dream Girls , noT To menTion an off- off Broadway play enTiTled Twelve Dreams. A shorT side Trip To Radio CiTy Music Hall. Mr. Mellon and Trina Barr walk Through ST,PaTrick's caThedral. On November 24, six GalT High enTranTs engaged in one of The mosT grueling conTesTs ever To happen in Their high school lives-a decaThlon. IT Took weeks of exhausTive Training To whip These compe- TiTions inTo shape. The faTeful day ap- proached. Morals were high. The six conTesTanTs had be- come superb represenTaTives of GalT High-Thanks To Their coaches, Don NoTToli, and RiTa Prichard, wiTh RoberT Kraude and Eugene Nunez as- sisTing. BuT waiT! These six people weren'T foolish enough To kill Themselves in such a Thing as a decaThlon, were They? Maybe noT a physical one. This was The Academic De- caThlon-a conTesT of brains, noT brawns. Our represenTaTives were divided inTo Three groups: Group A, which consisTed of Caroline Maccoun and KrisTi WinTerowd: Group B, which was Delores Mancebo and Troy Nelson: and Group C, which consisTed of Mike Ger- kin and KrisTi Grosshans. These six hardy souls com- peTed againsT TwenTy oTher ,. high schools and did very re- specTably. They were evaluaTed in Ten areas such as conversaTion skills, a wriTTen essay, and a formal speech, plus career educaTion, English liTeraTure, and maThemaTics, on which They had To Take wriTTen TesTs, noT To menTion a Super Quiz. Each TesT was worTh 400 poinTs, for a possible ToTal of 4000 poinTs. The firsT prize included a Trip To SouThern California's Dis- neyland and box seaTs aT The Rose Bowl in Pasadena. PicTured on This page are all Academic DecaThlon and MooT CourT parTicipanTs excepT KrisTi Grosshans and Mike Ger- ken. Their cases dealT wiTh The righT To close headshops, The FourTh AmendmenT, and The exclusionary law. WoolsTrum called iT a very challenging experience.
