Cruise begins with USS GALLERK in company with other units of the Atlantic Fleet, joined forces with Spanish Navy frigates, destroyers, fast patrol boats and Spain's aircraft carrier, Dedalo, for a ten day war-at-sea exercise in the western Mediterranean October 30 through November 8, 1983. Operating coast to coast between southern Spain and the northern coasts of Morocco and Algeria, all warfare areas Csurface, sub-surface, air, electronicj were exercised in the bi-national operation, called CRISEX 83,1 Aboard GALLERY the pace of operations was matched by the hard work of the Combat Information Center watchstanders. The Operations Specialists, Electronic Warfare Specialists, Sonar Technicians and Fire Control Technicians were kept busy by the ever-changing tactical picture, which included simulated air strikes, anti-submarine warfare drills, electronic warfare employment and maneuvering the ship through dense merchant traffic. Below decks the engineers kept the gas turbine engines tuned up and uready to answer all bellsi' under the Engineering Officer of the Watch leadership of ENS Mike Boyd, HTC Jesse Cromer, ENl Art Byrne, GSM1 Tim McCoy, and EM1 Gilbert Skinn. The announcement, Now man your flight quarters stationsj, was heard dozens of times and kept the Deck Department hopping to provide the helicopter pilots the necessary green deck to land. Helicopter Control Officers Lt. John Jowers, Lt. Tom Cosgrove and FTCS Charles E. Brett smoothly performed their demanding duties of guiding the choppers onto the small, rolling deck, often at night. Cross-decking Gallerymen to the Spanish destroyer Langara and receiving their officers and men was the highlight of CRISEX 83 for those who were tapped to make the transfer. The lucky ones were Lt. Randy Stefanovic, Ens. Randy Downing, Ens. Dave Kuebler, SM1 Mark Clark, PNl Michael Britt, FTM2 James Myers, RM2 Scott Dominy and OS3 Andrew Sheffield. ' The personnel exchanges were beneficial to both navies and a good way to enhance the U. S. friendship with our Spanish counterparts. Exchanging gifts and seeing the other guysn at work makes for a tighter operating force. After working hard and honing readiness skills, the time-honored pass in reviewn capped GAL- LER Y'S participation in CRISEX 83. On November 8 GALLERY along with sister ship USS CLARK IFFG-IU and other U. S. ships formed a column at close interval, manned the rails in handsome service dress blues uniforms and rendered honors to the Spanish admiral aboard their aircraft carrier, Dedalo. Thus ended the largest and most complex exercise ever executed to enhance the cooperation between the United States and Spain. 48 tune-up called uCrisex-83 Q -N I
