Prizzripfzl. MR. ARNOLD SALISBURY One of the most important and respected jobs in the community is that of being a high school principal. The person holding that position must possess high qualities which are essential to the efficient manage- ment of a modern high school. Our GHS principal, Mr. Arnold Salisbury, who took over Mr. XY'ooley's position at the beginning of the second semester, meets these high qualifications. Among his many school duties are: oper- ating the.sehool within the budget, pro- moting puhlic relations, supervising and guiding the students and faculty, teaching democracy, and maintaining the high stand- ards of GHS. Mr. Salisbury is very active in civic organizations in Galesburg. Being the Dean of Girls at GHS is a dif- ficult job, with many responsibilities, but Miss Ryin's friendly counsel has won the trust and admiration of all students and faculty. Miss Ryin is the advisor of GSL, and is a co-sponsor of Student Council. As a result of her cheerfulness, willing- ness, and efficiency in helping others, Miss Ryin has proved to be a well-liked, capable Dean of Girls. Mr. Goodwin, in addition to being the Dean of Boys, and advisor to Boys' Forum, is often seen helping GHS boys solve their problems of school and future years. Mr. Goodwin serves as the sponsor of Student Council, along with Nliss Ryin, and gives his assistance to many other school activities. GHS boys have come to feel that in Nlr. Goodwin they have found a real friend. Faculty . . . In addition to these representatives. four members at large were elected by the GHS student hody to serve on the Student Council. A very successful Homecoming was planned hy Student Council. as well as the Christmas and spring formals, at which we danced to the music of fine orchestras in the beautifully dec- orated Steele Gym. Besides these activities Student Council sponsored a Sadie Hawkins dance in March, which was highly enjoyed by students. XVe really liked the fun nights. and my how we over-stuffed ourselves at those bake sales. This year, Student Council helped to spon- sor the memorial dedication for our late super- intendent, Mr. Lindsey. and assisted with the various campaigns and drives such as the March of Dimes. Bl 'DG ET "Modern as tomorrow. exact as yesterday. progressive as today" aptly describes the weekly GHS publication, the BL'DGET. Led by joan Amato, editor, and Marilyn Adcock, managing editor, the various editors of the paper, along with their staffs, have completed another successful year for the BUDGET. Mr. Damberg, Mr. Aitchison, and Mr. McCormick were the faculty advisors for the BUDGET. Witli their comments, criticism, suggestions, and encouragements, they guided the staffs to higher ideals. The BUDGET's purpose is to keep its read- ers informed about GHS activities. The paper includes feature articles, general and sports news, editorials, student opinions, besides the regular Streaky column. Tryouts are held in the fall to anyone who is interested in being a staff member. Besides the writing staffs, there are also positions open to those interested in working with copy, pho- tography, circulation, advertising, and business management. Distributed about twenty times a school year. the BUDGET is known as the second oldest secondary newspaper in the nation to be put out every consecutive year, The BUDGET celebrated its fiftieth anniversary this year by putting out a special anniversary edition, and by having an anniversary banquet, whfch was held at the Hotel Custer, for the entire publica- tion staff. The featured speaker at this ban- quet was Mr. Kent Pease, who is the national president of Alpha Delta, a national honorary journalistic fraternity. The banquet was en- joyed by all who were present, and will be remembered for a long time. Despite their hard work, the editors and staff members had fun being together and working as one big family by selling conces- sions at the athletic events, and by presenting the REFLECTAVUE. This year publications sponsored a carnival, which was attended by students of GHS. . .j.. I-irsr row: S. Swanson. S. Lowe. N. lhillips, il. Brown Second row: B. Monson, N. Keim. Forty boys reported and several of them were good enough to play varsity ball. Twenty-six pony and three var- sity letters were awarded to sophomores, and several boys who did not win letters show great promise for the 1953-54 season. The team showed constant drive for im- provement throughout the season after two defeats and an easy win over a weak Canton team. They began to roll against East Peoria, lost 15 to 6 at Calvin Coolidge, swamped Kewanee 38 to O, and Monmouth 18 to O. Although Rock Island defeated them 14 to 13, the ponies played their best ball game and they were on the Rock Island four yard line when the game ended.
