A Long Wa HOIIIQ lcontinuedl penalty to lose the game 22-0. Back on the road again one week later to Wytheville, Galax was again defeated by a score of 28-14. The team, then eager for a victory met their rivals the Carroll County Cavaliers. With much determina- tion, the Tide gave it their best shot but was unable to stop the Cavaliers as they lost 22-13. And still the next week Galax lost to Patrick County 8-O as penalties spelled doom for the Tide. But finally the seventh game of the season proved a win, as the Tide skinned the Buffalos 25-0. The remaining three games against Narrows, Blacksburg, and Giles all spelled defeat again for the Tide. Ending the season with a 1-7 record and 1-8-1 overall, the Tide found it to be a frustrating one. After defeats drowned the Tide, they found it to be a long way home . . . Surrounded by a strong opposition, Timmy Coomes fights for a way out. Though lost for the season, Ied Goad showed his respect for the team by staying on as a coachs' assis- tant. Tide handicapped by injured players The Maroon Tide learned to live with less in more ways than one this year. The team, plagued by injuries, found them- selves in a position they'd never seen before. The Tide altogether lost 8 starters before their season had ended. The losses were attributed to such misfortunes as broken legs, broken arms, separated shoulders, concussions, back trouble, and knee surgery. It seemed that at some time in every game at least one more person was added to the list of injuries. These tremendous losses contributed to lessen- ing the strength of the team. Many senior members were injured and there were some whose injuries prevented them from playing the remainder of their senior year, Although the injuries were many and the players were few, the team always put forth their best efforts. 34 VARSITY FOOTBALL
