Beta Club Member: a member of the elite group of extrememly intelligent human beings attending Galax High School. Tap, tap, tap, No, this isn't tap and ballet class. lt's the familiar sound of old Beta club members tapping ceremony. Are these people hermits? Do they spend each waking hour studying the concepts of the Pythagorean Theorem? Not really, but some are known as the Curve Kill- ing Capers. They cram for hours at a time just to kill the curve on an Algebra ll, Math IV, or Chemistry test. Along with making above average grades, the Beta Club also contributes to community-wide service projects and school projects. These Beta Club mem- bers may become great philosophers, chemists, maybe even President of the United States! 108 CLUBS iw.. You may not see these people roaming the halls of G.H.5, but they can be found in the vocational building learning various skills in practical nurs- ing. These days it's not unusual to find a couple of males in this course. They might even be an appreciated change of scenery. What do these people do? Everything from A to Z. They learn the primary skills of practical nursing such as changing bed linens, taking blood pressures, learning the bone structure of the human body, and many other important things. Who know what these future Florence Nightingales will be doing after the capping ceremony? , rt, ,apt ' Beverly Lucas volunteers an eager young student to clean bed pans. 107

Play That Funky Music Maybe not as wild as the Flying Dutchman or Johnny Fever, but on Saturday afternoon WBOB S onsors 50 minutes of nonstop jam for the students delight. The S.C.A. sponsors and selects six air-worthy students to host the show. While everyone else is still in bed at 12:30 on Saturday mornings, the announcers are at WBOB sorting out to hits and preparing for the show. The hits mailed 'to WBOB by the companies may not be Teen Time material, but the announcers still manage to round up plenty of good tunes to kee everyone rockin'-n-rollin' for a short while. Even though most peo- ple don't realize it, the show airs year round, except for Va. Tech's football seasons when their games are announced. After the show is over at 2:00, everyone tunes to another station just waiting to jam again next Saturday with Teen Time.
