FOREIG LANGUAGE SPANISH Spanish was offered for the first year at Galax High School. These students sharpened their Latin vocabulary with a review of the . first year vocabulary plus the addi-' tion of many new words. E Gusn The English classes not only were taught the fundamentals of grammarand modern linguistics but also ,explored .different periods of American and English literature. Students studiedthe con- tributions -of authors in American literature and themes of stories as they related to modern times.. Special emphasis was placed on composition in reach grade level. Writing began inthe eighth grade with sentence structure and paragraph writing and progressed through thetwelfthe grade with narration and essays for greater depth of expression. Ed., University of Virginia of Virginia Guidance Guidance, English From the first of August until the last of June our guidance counselors p ,..,..,.lff A T are involved in a multitude of interesting and varied activities. They register all students, administer the school testing program, con- duct group guidance sessions, arrange for an annual College and Career Day and counsel individual students, parents, and teachers. They provide information about occupations schools and colleges, the armed services, and financial assistance for training beyond high school. H E Mrs Faddis carefully instructs a first-year student in the fundamentals ooking. MRS. HELEN B. GALYEN B. S. Radford College Home Economics MRS. LOIS SAVAGE FADDIS B. S. Radford College Horne Economics Mrs. Galyen instructs student in more advanced home econo- mics classes. Home economics helped to prepare girls for the work of a homemaker and an intelligent consumer. Units of study included those in child care, making and taking care of clothes, and preparing enjoyable, nutri- tious meals. Students also took a look at the practical side of marriage and home management. Through activ- ities such as fashion shows, workshops, field trips, lectures, demonstrations, and classroom discussions, the girls gained practical knowledge in each area of study. gym l
