ww. .. Slipping silently into Aranci Bay, an inlet on the north east tip of Sardinia, GAINARD joined most of the Sixth Fleet. While Admirals, task force commanders and Captains conferred, GAINARD swung slowly at anchor. This grouping at Aranci was the most powerful fighting force ever assem- bled and include d three Attack Carriers, two Cruisers, one missile equipped, submarines, L i,ncludingNAUTILUS, and over a dozen destroyers. OI Dlvuslow Whether protecting our ship from air or submarine attack, lending support to an amphi- bious operation, aiding the Navigator while sailing the ship into a busy, fog-shrouded har- bor, or assisting a harassed OOD in preventing collision during a high-speed manuever, OI Di- vision is always on the job. lt's work is carried on in a dark, mysterious space known as Combat information Center, CIC, or more commonly, Combat . At first glance Combat is a con- fusing, disorganized place with radio speakers blaring forth unintelligible sounds, men peering into circular screens not unlike TV screens, and strange words such as skunk , bogey , or CPA being muttered by pale, drawn, hol- low-eyed individuals known as Radarmen. Some people never quite seem to recover from this first impression. The Electronic Technicians are charged with the responsibility of maintaining all the complicated,bewildering,electronic gear which the Radarmen and Radiomen must have in order to do their jobs. On call twenty-four hours a day, the ET must have at his fingertips the knowledge and training necessary to repair any of the over 75 pieces of electronic equip- ment installed in the ship.
