With the ever growing threat to our security, caused by the increasing number of Communist submarines, the function of Anti-Submarine Warfare becomes paramount. ASW as it is called, is the hunting, tracking and killing of enemy submarines. To be prepared and ready, the GAINARD spends much of her operating timed time working with friendly submarines in simulated wartime conditions. The sonarmen and torpedomen work side by side in this effort. From the long hours of training in the sonar room, the tedious hours of watch spent before the sonar scope, and the cold days spent at GQ manning our ASW weapons, comes the rewarding message sent by sub, X CONSIDER MYSELF OUT OF ACTION DUE TO SUCCESSFUL ATTACK BY. GAINARD X Working side by side with our gunnersmatesiare the Firecontrolmen, known locally as the FT gang It is into their skillful hands the shipis Gun Directors and associated radars are entrusted. The FT's are members of the team that electronically point the guns to ,give maximum hits per gun per minute. Fox Division is probably best known for their participation in any available tour and for their mysteri- ous friend, Fred Pullman. Camel sad- dles, arab costumes, and fancy wood-carvings were crammed into every nook and cranny by ardent shoppers. A camera tour through the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Baalebek, provided a mul- titude of fine slides. Certain members of the wardroom visited the Casino of Lebannon and are still talking about the revue, Les Doris Girls . This Medi- terranean City was our first port after the Red Sea and will long be remembered as atime or re- laxation and fun.
