With the ever growing threat to our security, caused by the increasing number of Communist submarines, the function of Anti-Submarine Warfare becomes paramount. ASW as it is called, is the hunting, tracking and killing of enemy submarines. To be prepared and ready, the GAINARD spends much of her operating timed time working with friendly submarines in simulated wartime conditions. The sonarmen and torpedomen work side by side in this effort. From the long hours of training in the sonar room,the tedious hours of watch spent before the sonar scope, and the cold days spent at GQ manning our ASW weapons, comes the rewarding message sent by sub, X CONSIDER MYSELF OUT OF ACTION DUE TO SUCCESSFUL ATTACK BY. Once again, however, duty dictated and we moved out to our patrol area and then down to the tip of Arabia. Cameras, binoculars and movie projectors became our cargo here,but soon we were Africa bound again, this time to Massawa in Eritrea. That the great salt flats, the hottest place on earth, were only one hundred miles from Massawa we little doubted. We were rewarded by the Ethiopian Navy with a day trip to Asmara, 8000 feet above sea level, with a temperature change of fifty degrees.
