Stopping only to pick up a pilot and make necessary arrangements, we proceeded south- through eighty miles of desert- bordered canal. Passing through Great Bitter Lake, the Canal's midpoint, we were reminded of the seri- ousness of our purpose in the Sixth Fleet. Just a mile or so from the canal's banks was an airfield filled with scores ofliussian built Mig 17 jet fighters. Arriving in Port Suez at the southern point of the Canal, our deployment began under the Commander, Middle East Force, and a five week patrol ofthe Red Sea-Persian Gulf area followed. Uur first Port was Djibouti, the capital of French Somaliland, and our introduction to Africa. The intense heat and dust- , , I , I laden air were thwarted by the discovery of an oasis, K ..
