JW Y wi. 3 ENCH Also armed with six 3 inch guns, the Gainard proves just why she is called a Destroyer. There have been many days, when, following the sharp crack of these rapid firing weapons, all eyes have trained skyward to see the towed aircraft sleeve floating down from above. It is to these three inch boys, that we owe our protection from the sky. , Xf , 1.1 ,W 51f 7 .ME 'fwfr-3 iwwf- Max! ,WW Z2 'ASWQ G ww J ' W IV 7 f A r- . Stopping only to pick up a pilot and make necessary arrangements, we proceeded south- through eighty miles of desert- bordered canal. Passing through Great Bitter Lake, the Canal's midpoint, we were reminded of the seri- ousness of our purpose in the Sixth Fleet. Just a mile or so from the canal's banks was an airfield filled with scores ofliussian built Mig 17 jet fighters. Arriving in Port Suez at the southern point of the Canal, our deployment began under the Commander, Middle East Force, and a five week patrol ofthe Red Sea-Persian Gulf area followed.
