The deck force .... the hard working bosun mates who keep the ship looking Navy are always the unsung heroes of any ship. Per- petual clothed in a thin coat of haze grey paint, they wage a constant battle with the angry sea. The First Division prides itslef on the seaman-like appearance of the forecastle. It is their task to keep the massive anchors and associated deck gear in top shape. This pride is not misplaced as an inspection of these spaces will disclose. The mighty Second, counterpart of our First Division, maintains the after part ofthe ship. They also maintain our motor whale boat, The Cap- tain's gig, which they can raise or lower at amazing speeds when entering or leaving port. The ship's appearance is the direct result of the work put in by these exterior decorators.
