The human heart has hidden treasures, In secret kept, in silence sealedg The thoughts, the hopes, the dreams, the pleasures, Whose charms were broken if revealed. Cbarlotle Bronte Some day these pages will be golden with age and withered by time, but the treasures contained within, will always be fresh and glistening like a morning dewdrop. As you open the maroon and white cover and begin glancing at the pictures, many a smile will brighten your face, as you recall various and humorous in- cidents. While reading an article you come across a name and wonder what has become of that dear friend. Upon turning each page, you reflect on the great amount of knowledge acquired in ten months, usable knowledge that serves well along life's road. Yes, all your treasured thoughts, hopes, pleasures, and dreams are contained forever in this book. Noth- ing or no one can touch or harm them, for they are . . . . . memories. as r wwf' ,iii elif wftfrk y WL Mega! aff A 3 W afgfjgaff rilfljk I J s . A sight that was quite familiar last winter was seeing Gage Park students, warmly dressed, their arms full of books and lunches, rushing up the school steps and quickly ducking into the building for warmth. Undoubtedly on such mornings very few stopped to admire the lovely scenery thought- fully displayed by Old Man Winter. The Icarian staff, however, is making amends with Mr. Winter by picturing here two beautiful winter scenes of our own campus. While the howling winds outside rushed about madly, creating intricate patterns of snowflakes and icicles, more wonderful scenes were taking place in our school gyms, classrooms, laboratories and other rooms. Scenes in which students and teachers worked side by side-each doing amiably their share of the work. We, here at Gage Park High School, realize that only through education can we prevent the coming of Winter with its prejudices, wars, and hatred in our country. Only through education can Spring bloom forth over our great land with its truth, under- standing, and democracy. Gage Bark iiaigb School In the lives of students some school activities, events, and incidents stand out as being significant and more meaningful than others. Members of the Icarian Staff, and the teacher-sponsors, Miss Blake, Mr. Heyse, and Mr. Sheridan, have endeavored to identify and to record the important and memorable school happenings during 1951-52. For your present and future enjoyment they present these in the Icarian, 1952. V 1 Miss Frances Schaefer is our Assistant Principal. All of us at Gage Park High appreciate her understanding and industry. I She fulfills many duties, such as teacher-program adjustments, the administration of ollice tests, the interviewing of possible student failures, and the issuance of early dis- missals. At Gage Park we not only highly respect our efficient Assistant Principal, Miss Frances Schaefer , but we also know that we are very fortunate to have such a capable administrator in our school. Our Adjustment Teacher is Miss Holly McKillen, who interviews prospective students of Gage Park High at Parent-Interview Days, and assists failing students. Mr. Paul Bohus is not only Civics teacher but also Program Director. He arranges both teachers' and stu- dents' programs, fits the classes into classrooms, and prepares gym programs for the boys. Office J4ClZ77li7lZ'.S'f7'fl1f07'.S' Mr. Thomas Benson is our Attendance Counselor. He is kept busy checking on absentees, truants, delinquents, "cutters", etc. Mixed in with all this penance he gets an occasional bit of luxury-he is in charge of the Awards Assemblies. If you want a job after school hours or after gradua- tion, Miss Catherine Roche is our Placement Counselor. She also arranges for prospective graduates' college en- trance exams and forms, and scholarship exams. Miss Alice Scannell, pictured here with two of her helpers, is in charge of educational plan sheets. She supervises student sequences and programs girls for gym classes. Our three ofhce clerks, Mrs. Spruner, Miss Rolston, and Miss Tolbert are pictured here. They prepare bul- letins and letters, answer telephones, type division ab- sence lists, prepare transcripts, keep records and do many other activities. Miss Mary Powell is our School Registrar. She takes care of credits and transfers in and out of our school. Mr. john Sheridan is our School Treasurer and Busi- ness Manager. To his custody go student and teacher collections, tickets for activities, etc. Faculty Mr. Accetturo, Miss Anderson, Miss Baer Mr. Belief, Miss Bcnnoon. Mr. Benson, Miss Blake, Mr, Bohus. Make me more aggressive, more interested and alert in my daily contacts with people and with life, that I may find fresh material on which to write. Increase, O Lord, my power to observe and feel and think, and to express my inmost thoughts with daring incisiveness and pungency. Forgive my indifferent spelling and my careless literary lapses, and prune my manuscript of faded phrases and dangling sentences. Give me the courage to say resolutely, "I don't know," and then to go out unashamed to discover the right answer. Help me to cultivate constantly at least one major interest, and to enjoy at least one recreation and hobby. Give me an abiding pleasure in the arduous task of writing, keeping in mind always my obligation to win my reader. Keep my mind well filled but never closed, and free me of conceit, buncombe and pose, so that I may do my daily stint honestly and thoroughly, and without too much expectation of applause. Let me not be too greatly discouraged by rejection slips, remembering that acceptance cometh in the morning. And when my typewriter is covered with dust, O Lord, add to my unfinished story a happy ending to all I have dreamed and thought and prayed. Amen. By gaining second place in the district and thereby earning the right to participate, the Gage Park ROTC Rifle Team for the second season in a row entered the City Cham- pionship playoffs. In the City Championship Play-offs the Rifle Team came in ninth place in the entire city and, since they were one of the smallest schools present, this was quite an ac- complishment. Baseba ll Team Gage Park organized its first baseball team in 1959, under the direction of Mr. Paul Stanger, the present day coach. Fame came to Gage Park in 1944 when they won the Central Section title, and again in the following year, 1945, when they represented Chicago in the Downstate Tournament. Gage Park went as far as the Semi-Finals before being eliminated. Since then Gage Park has always had a fine Baseball team, never finishing lower than fourth place in the last eight years. This year Gage has put into the field a fine team with live returning veterans and reserves from last year. The returning veterans being, Ed. Kubik, jack Doligale, Robert Krolak, Ron. Fara, and Ed. Dettloff. The reserves from last year are joe Pargulski, Don Kirincic, Len. Tandaric, Tony De Novi, and Rich. Novicki. In February, 1952, at the time the Leaders' Club celebrated its first -birthday, the club was proved to be beneficial and worthwhile. Miss Kruzic, its originator, was greatly pleased and now has decided to keep this club going. When a girl, in her second year or more, is recommended by her class teacher to become a leader, she must be approved by the gym ofiice. The requirements for a leader- to-be are that she must have at least an in gymg and an average grade in all of her academic studies. After having been in the Leaders' Club for a year she has then finished her basic training and is now a full-fledged leader. Leaders help in the gym department, referee games, take charge of the locker room, and assist in the swimming pool. When a Leader serves two semesters in the Leaders' Club she is given an award. ll llll ll'l llll 5112" M? Ge 5191 ' 545172 1 4 . xy X , mf X h R 3 X . K- WH R 6 . Q ?
