CRUCIBLE 1988 ... i time for decisions A Year In the Life was chosen as the theme for the 1988 Crucible because it was best suited to our need to accu- rately portray a small, but substantial, portion of our lives: the high school experience as it is lived at Gadsden High. As ninth graders we all decide what we want from the next four years. Some chose to sit back and observe while oth- ers chose to excel in either sports, ac- ademics, or social activities. What sep- arates Gadsden High from other schools is the percentage of those who make the decision to take an active role in their high school experience. contents opening aficnts activities o anijati ns tnends fiensonatities iacuiUi aofi uwtones fcati yts seniors ctoSiKf cottuttfutiUf aufifuvtt index 2 7 27 51 76 21 22 27 97 105 113 155 173 S above: Michael Madden and Janice Hooks are proud to be Gadsden High Tigers. Generally, most students look for- ward to lunchtime as a break in their busy day of study and classwork. above: Freshman Mary Margaret Haygood has that look of surprise that seems so common on the faces of ninth graders until they get used to being at GHS. CRUCIBLE 1988 a time for involvement The uninvolved Student had no ex- cuse. The number of extra-curricular activities and the opportunities for each and every person to become in- volved were numerous. Whether you were in an A.P. class, a member of the cheerleading squad, or involved with class homecoming activities, you had the opportunity to make the most of your high school experience. The saying one can only expect to get out of some- thing what one puts into it applies to high school as much as it does to any other part of life. The following pages are the culmi- nation of ideas, observations, and input from a group of people who came to- gether one hour a day to function as a unit and accomplish the demanding task of assembling a yearbook which all students would be proud to call their Crucible. 5 a yeast C t — Sports and athletics enrich the curriculum of any school by paying attention to the physical development of the student as well as the mental development. GHS offers a number of opportunities to students to become active in athletics as shown by the wide range of sports and the high number of students involved, top: The Soccer Team in action, above: A Tiger runner slides toward the base. left: Volleyball competition brought our Lady Tigers one-on-one with other top notch players. 7 rr ; Tiger Head Coach Vince DiLorenzo sums up the football season: 1 am very proud of the way the football team handled the adversities and injury problems we had this year. This class of seniors will graduate knowing they have never been beaten by Sansom or Litchfield. The legacy they leave behind is that anything is possible if you will set your goals, believe in them and then work hard to accomplish them. This is the price of success. The football team once again had a winning season. Our record was 6-3 and included some close wins as well as heartbreaking losses. The Tigers proved that they could indeed progress and carry on as the pride of our city. It was difficult to top the performance of last year's state championship team, but no one ever accused the 1987 Tigers of resting on their laurels”. They worked hard throughout the season and earned the respect of their many fans and supporters by playing with determination and effort at every outing. No, it wasn't another state championship year, but it was definitely a year when we all could say It's great to be a Gadsden Tiger! 4 lilfJg56As7 7i 3UAlff 3 ti2rsB25i0ry5 b% dmmm. They represented themselves, Gadsden High, and their families well. I guess the thing that I’ll remember most about this team is that they never gave up, no matter how bad things looked. They're all winners in my book. -Coach Ronald Mayes Overall, we had a good season. We had a few let downs during the season that cost us a play-off spot, but the players put it all on the line and played well when they ivanted to. The Dance xvas the culmination of weeks of planning and preparation by the yearbook staff, sponsors of the annual event. During the preceding weeks, each class had been asked to select students as its 1988 Favorites. Freshmen, Sophomores, and luniors elected five couples and the Seniors elected ten couples. The lower classes then voted among the favorites to select the top male for kingsman and the top female for beauty. Senior Favorites were intervieived by a panel of judges from outside the school who ranked them and thereby selected the three kingsmen, three beauties, king, and queen. None of the favorites were told ahead of time who would be named kingmen or beauties. After an hour of music by the band RadioBerlin, the crowd at the dance settled as Crucible co-editor Tisa Moore began the announcements for the leadout. The favorites from each class were announced as they walked through an ivy-covered archway, down the center of Convention Hall and up the green-carpeted stairway to the stage. After all favorites from each class were announced, Crucible members presented sealed envelopes containing the election results so that Tisa could announce the kingsman and beauty. After the Freshmen, Sophomores, and luniors were announced, the crowd grew restless waiting for the big moment — the senior leadout. Senior Favorites were attired in traditional formalwear — boys in white tie and tails and girls in formal white dresses with long gloves. When all ten couples had been announced and were on stage, Tisa read out the names of the four kingsmen and four beauties who stepped forward expectantly. Misti Smith, yearbook staff member, was given the honor of crowning this year's king, Sedric Holstick. After teasing the four beauties with the queen's crown, Sedric finally placed the tiara on the head of Shannon Sherman. Roses were presented to the queen by Crucible co-editor Ion Doss. After all this suspense and tension, the entire court relaxed as they led the guests in a traditional first dance following the leadout. Every girl's dream became a reality for me and my family that night. I cannot think of a better way to end these four years at Gadsden High School. Membership in the National Honor Society is based on the qualities of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Since only those students who exhibit these qualities are considered, the prestige of being selected for membership in NHS is great. The veteran members of the NHS began the ceremony with remarks by president Nathan Moore, followed by a devotional led by Adria Garry (right). Other students in the group spoke briefly on the qualities required for membership. Jonathan Godbey (right, second picture) spoke on the qualities of scholarship. Nichole Kell (right, third picture) lit the candle of character and spoke on this trait, fason Wilhite lit the candle of sendee and Sedric Holstick (right, bottom picture) spoke on the virtues of leadership. Students in grades ten through twelve in public, parochial, and private schools are eligible to compete. Participants are judged on their interpretation of the year's theme. Each year the theme changes, but always covers a phase of democracy. Contests are held on the local, district, state, and national levels. Approximately 125 Gadsden High students participated in the 1987-88 contest. Scott Steu art was the Gadsden High School winner. After winning the school contest, Scott placed first in the city-county schools contest ivhich gave him the opportunity to compete against winners from across Alabama on the state contest level. Scott received cash awards for city-county and district participation. Gadsden High’s seventy-five members have worked diligently toward improving their school and community this year. They received honorable mention for their achievements at the Alabama District Key Club Convention. Their achievements include the following projects and activities: The students honored the teachers with a luncheon during Teacher Ap- preciation Week. They helped park cars at all the home football games. $1000 was raised for the Alabama Sheriff’s Boys' and Girls' Ranches and the group also held a canned food drive and collected over 500 cans at Christmas for these needy children. The Key Club also took presents for 50 chil- dren to the Danville ranches at Christmas. They held a breakfast for the football team to show their support and also honored the principal with a plant during Administrators' Appreciation Week. A major project was the annual Valentine Dance which was well attended by students. During the spring, club members cleaned rooms for the teachers, a task they had prepared for by cleaning the field house prior to the homecoming pep rally in the fall. Their clean-up campaign extended to their participation in the city-wide beautification day program and they also helped provide the new land- scaping in front of the school. The group sponsored an in- terclub picnic for the boys at John Croyle's Big Oak Ranch. His original lyrics were set to the tune of Michael Jackson's Dirty Diana and became a popular and often requested number on Q-104 each day. The song ivas requested so often by teenage listeners that it rose to on Mike Mitchell's Top Ten at Ten listing. The teens hoped that by showing their support for this song, their problem of boredom can be eliminated. above: Noccalula Falls, Gadsden's most famous tourist spot, was also a popular place for teens to gather to socialize with friends, right: a popular place to gather after football games was Country Gold in Rainbow Plaza. I Live in Gadsden lyrics by Larry Logan I try to tell people there's nothing to do in Gadsden. Sure, the movies are great, but going night after night can get old ... Why do I stay at home. Night after night all alone? You say there's something to do, I say thit it's just not true. I can't go cruisin' at all, I cannot circle the mall, I can't go standing inside, They'll run me off and I'll hide. Others say that's OK. Gadsden might change one day. But I don't know if I can wait. Why do they pro-cras-ti-nate ... I keep talking about this stinking town I live in You ask me just how I feel? Then I will tell you again! I live in Gadsden, oh, There's nothing to do in Gadsden, Nothing. 76 left: This proves that, contrary to the opinion of some teens, Gadsden IS on the map. below: During the warmer months, Phillip Burchfield's pier in Whorton's Bend was a popular place after school, and for some students who cut classes, during school hours as well. , , , fazctyattfo left, top picture: 76 Mart was a familiar meeting spot throughout the year, left, bottom picture: Regardless of the clique you were in, Meadowbrook Park was always a place to meet and make new friends. a yeax C Piead i t98X 77 t ie , , , above, left: George Michael was a popular face among music lovers this year due to his extremely popular album Faith . Music and cars seemed to go together this year, because the music you listened to while riding in your car was almost as important as the car itself. Music as well as cars ranged from old classics to new hits . The various tastes in music and autos reflected the differences among in- dividuals. There were also about as many new faces on the music scene for '88 as there were new drivers on the roads. left: This music display in a Gadsden store shows some of the top selling titles and artists of 1988, as well as the popular prices paid by music lovers to listen to their favorite sounds. 78 Students' tastes (and budgets) dictated the types of cars that were popular in 1988. Choices ranged from the classy Nissan Maxima (too) to sportier Jeeps (above and lower left) to the classic styling of the Fairmont (left). 0 0 0 79 0 0 0 fctefaoa tnettcte Walking down the halls of Gadsden High, one could see an assortment of styles. The word fashion meant choice to the teen of 1988. Dress lengths ranged from the ex- treme mini to skirts that fell at the an- kles. Mixed prints were a hot look along with shirts left untucked and hanging from under overshirts and sweaters. Personal- ities could be expressed through fashion. During the summer months, sundresses for girls and Duckhead shorts for guys were popular. Tie-dyes and torn jeans were worn by all. Once an escape from the heat was no longer needed, there was an obvious shift in fashion. Students no longer clung to a uni- form look, but found styles that worked well for them individually. A majority opted for dressier clothes; tailored and fitted clothing were very fash- ionable. far right: Claire Hardy models the sundress and tennis shoes that were fashionable in warmer months, right: Hard Rock T-shirts were a popular look this year. i above left: ANARCHY and PEACE were pop- ular symbols displayed on t-shirts and other clothing this year, above right: Tank tops and bare shoulders were part of the springtime fashion look, right: Tie-dyed t-shirts in bright colors were among the hottest fashion looks for casual dressing during 1988. far right: Josh Hamil models the popular look of shorts and button-front t-shirt. 80 a yean 6 t t6e Cc e fren4e taCitie top: Shannon Sherman, Christy Roberson, and Tammy Roberson pause during their lunch break, above: The Tiger Band knows how to have a great time during a pep rally, left: Cheerleader Janna Morrow shares her Tiger Spirit with our mascot, Yvonne Gar- rett. a yean C t t6e Cc e £... acuity cutcC top: Gadsden High School Principal Bob Russell, above: Assistant Principal Johnny McAlpine, right: Assistant Principal Gary Muskett faculty cutcC Thelma Alexander Mike Argo Rick Arthur Gene Barnes Barbara Bishop lames Brown Martha Bullock Georgia Clarke Mary Rose Cowart Vince DiLorenzo Mildred Donald Jeannette Ford VOCOfi. U 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 3, 1988, the senior class gathered for the last time to ob- serve commencement exercises at Convention Hall. During this eighty-ninth annual com- mencement program, approximately 140 mem- bers of the class of 1988 received their di- plomas from principal Bob Russell. Graduation, as always, was met with mixed emotions as many seniors expressed their sor- row that it ivas over too soon while others were simply elated at having reached this milestone in their lives. In traditional white caps and gowns, the seniors were solemn dur- ing the actual ceremonies, and many grew anxious as the time neared for the awarding of diplomas. Families and guests filled the au- ditorium to capacity, all proud to witness the achievements of their loved ones among the graduates. A musical selection including “That's What Friends are For sung by the Velvetones during the program caused many of the seniors to realize that this would be the last time they might see all their classmates together, the last time they might see certain individuals forever. There ivas a pervasive sense of conclusion about this evening — it was a fitting ending to twelve years of study, to twelve years of school routines, to twelve years of friends and fellowship, to twelve years in the lives of the class of 1988. Mary Beth Cook is congratulated by Mr. Russell as she receives the prestigious Julia Rhinehart Award, presented by the faculty to the most outstanding female graduate in each class. Senior Jaime Day leaves the stage after receiving the Frank Cottle Award for 1988, given to recognize the most outstanding male graduate in the class as chosen by the faculty. 148 Standing, as other members of their class file in to begin the ceremonies, the seniors of 1988 shared mixed emotions about the significance of this evening. left: Andrew Loveman smiles as he accepts the Hoffman Award, given each year to the senior who is chosen as the most outstanding representative of his or her class, above, top: Valedictorian Jonathan Godbey spoke to his classmates about YJe Approach the Future just above: Salutatorian Byron Todd titled his address 'The Choice is Ours . 149 top left: Drew Howard, David Partridge. The Class of 1988 chose as their graduation theme The Future Is Ours , a statement of their op- timism as they left Gadsden High behind. The addresses of the speakers at commencement fo- cused on this theme of opportunities, but what did the seniors themselves think of their theme? Marcie West said, ”It means you can do anything that you want, and be anything that you want to be.” Misti Smith, expressing a slightly different view, said, It means the future of our country depends on us — we are the generation that has to uphold and protect and make something of our beautiful land God has given us.” Other seniors had still different ideas, but all agreed that the theme was appropriate for a class that had faced hardships and disappointments, yet had risen to success. Each senior that received a diploma was handed more than a document; he received an opportunity to go forth into the world and make something of himself. He received the right and the permission of society to work for changes, to improve the world around him, and to shape his own future — whatever he chooses that future to be. 151 right: You can tell by his confident stance that Matt Meloun takes AP Spanish seriously. above: Co-editors of this year's Crucible, Tisa Moore and Jonathan Doss share their reflections on the facing page. right: Zoology students engrossed in their assignment were typical of the many days spent in pursuit of educational excellence by CHS students. 152 CRUCIBLE 1988 Reflections of a year . . . My four years at GHS have been full of experiences. I have come to realize more than what books can teach. Com- patibility is the foundation on which our society rests. A person compatible with those around him who has de- veloped a likable personality has learned the secret of success. — lonathan Doss The 1988 school year will always be remembered as a truly great time in the history of GHS. We had great sports action, awesome dances, plenty of school spirit, and, of course, those times when we thought classes would never end. Now it's all over. It's time for seniors to move on and hand down their duties to next year’s class. It has been an honor to capture a year full of mem- ories that we have produced. — Tisa Moore top: Color Guard members Ioanna Pruett, Kim Lecroy, Angie Templeton, LePrecious Leonard, Melissa Har- ris, Stephanie Williams, and Sherry Gargus are all smiles as they are surrounded by orange and black — a lucky sign before a band performance. center: Ryan Russell enjoys the second semester of his senior year the way we'd all like to: napping in the warm sun. left: Beotis McClain rests between classes, waiting for friends to pass in the hallway. 153 a (fean £...
