Building The Great Walls of GHS With the beginning of each new school year, a building process is set into motion. From September to June GHS student architects apply their skills and talents to various activities, challenges, and academics. Some students will continue to build on past dreams and goals, others will build on new dreams of things yet to come. Teams and organizations will work together for the benefit of all, and individuals will share their personal ac- complishments and character. But no matter how a stu- dent gives a part of his creativity to the school, he is con- tributing to the unique quality and pride that makes Gadsden High an exemplary and respected school. The picture on the previous page contains mixed elements that are a part of everyday student life. Special elements that make one's high school years a time of hap- piness that will be remembered forever. Each event, ac- tivity, and accomplishment that a student experiences may be thought of as another brick in the wall — The Great Walls of GHS. Each year's building blocks of pride and quality create strong walls that will support and at- tribute to the school in the years to come. Some called them a Cinderella team — from rags to riches. These descriptions may apply, in part, but it was not magic or luck that brought the Gadsden High Tigers from a five game losing streak into the 5A state champion- ship. It was a combination of spirit, determination, drive, and pride that led the Tigers to the ultimate victory. Regaining Respect —i They were never alone. The fans, the parents, the faculty and students, the entire community watched every agonizing step toward the goal which they had set. There was heartache and pain followed by a cautious sense of optimism and then wild rejoicing when the final play was over. Their supporters again were there to hail the Tigers' victory with praise and applause. You see, this was not only a victory for the team, but also for their coaches, their fans, their classmates, and their city — Because of them, we all had a cham- pionship year. ALL STATE J. D. RECORD 18 SUB-STATE CHAMPIONS STATE TOURNAMENT AN OUTSTANDING YEAR With an overall record of 18-5, the boy's varsity basketball team became the 5A Area 16 champions for the fourth time within the past five years. Coach Gary Muskett said, I'm very proud of tnat and, of course, of in- cluding a state championship in those same five years. Until the unfor- tunate injury of Charlie Hicks, G.H.S. was the odas-on favorite, alongside the eventual champion, Hayes, to win the state tournament. Players Keith Dudley and Parrish Sanders earned All-Area 16 for this season. Dudley was also recognized as All- Tournament during the state tourna- ment and was named to the sports- writers second all-state team. Muskett added, I'm very proud of 'em to say the least. Dawn light revealed the first April snowfall in Gadsden's history, a five-inch blanket of glittering white which was enough to close schools for the day. This was an unexpected holiday for most students, but struck panic into the hearts of Crucible Staff Members. A panic of possible cancellation of the Coronation Ball, or perhaps having to do without a band due to travel conditions. However, the snow began to melt and by nine a.m. the staff along with a dedicated group of students began transforming Convention Hall into a dream setting for the evening. When the dance began at eight o'clock, the only memory of the inconvenient snowfall was a brisk 28° chill in the air. As the fantasy of our evening began to unfold the days trials and tribulations were forgotten. Gone were the long days of planning and preparation involved in our theme selection, Wish Upon a Star, court voting, decoration order, and M + M Sales to help finance the biggest dance of the year. Now only the beauty remained as we wished upon a star.... The 1987 Coronation Court was presented in the leadout. As favorites of each class were presented, the suspense built until the class kingsman and beauty were announced. Finally capping the magical evening, tne Senior Class presented its favorites. From these couples, the class and a panel of distinguished judges had chosen four beauties and kingsmen who were called to center stage. Then the long awaited moment arrived when, on behalf of the Crucible Staff, Amy Home placed the crown on his majesty, King fohn Massey. After a moment of excitement Amy whispered tne Queen's name into John's ear! John moved teasingly behind the row of _______I....______I____ ___i________.l a _ i. i___ exploded as he crowned her majesty. Queen Laure Butler. Then, amid the flashes of cameras and bright spotlights, the royal couple led the Senior Favorites onto the dance floor tor a special dance to our theme music, Wish Upon A Star. Perhaps their wish upon a star had come tme. After all, the evening was made for wishes and dreams . . . and memories. Top right: A happy royal couple! The building of the float took a lot of hard work and dedication by the participating Junior students who spent several nights at the Walnut Park Fire Station to complete their task. Everyone who worked on the float seemed to enjoy preparing for the 1986 GHS Homecoming Homecoming activities. Although the float dia not receive one of the top prizes, the Juniors were proud of the way it showed their spirit during the Homecoming parade. The Junior float is ready for the 1986 Homecoming parade. 77 Juniors Left: Marcie West, Tisa Moore, Catherine Johnson, Nicole Kell, and Angie Schnackenberg enjoy par- ticipating in the homecoming parade. FINALLY SENIORS!!! We're ftmtHy Seniors! For some students in the dui of '87. June $th will bring tear of tadne , for other , tears of joy. The clast of '87 started the year by encouraging other classe to let their Tiger Spirit show at the pep rallies. By wearing such apparel as Burger King crowns, togas, coneheadt, bandanas, baby bibs, and Halloween costume the Seniors attempted to challenge underclassmen to do the same in the quest for the spirit stick and to let our 5A State Champs know that the stu- dent body was behind them The theme for the Senior Homecom- ing float was Tiger Stew Dawgs and it placed first in the competition. This was the third consecutive year that the class of '87 won first prize in the float completition. As the year passed by. Seniors went through the motions associated with being a Senior such as ordering graduation supplies, selling magazines, and enjoying the special privileges granted by Mr Russell and the faculty. Whether they realize it or not. the Senior class dictates a great deal of leadership to the rest of the student body. It is their duty to set an ex- emplary model composed of dedica- tion, pride, optimism, responsibility, and character. The Seniors of '87 hope that they have succeeded in all of these areas and challenge future Seniors to do the same. Seniors class officers are from left to right — Misti Naylor — treasurer, Mark Moates — president, Aimee Hagedorn — vice- president, and Andrew Roberts — secretary. 86 asiandra Jra Ja Beta Club 2 Yrs; French Club 2 Yrs, Jr Red Cross 3 Yrs.; Bible Club 2 Yrs.. Graduation brings out many kinds of emotions. Seniors simultaneously feel over- joyed and sad, ecstatic and depressed, hap- py and afraid. The Class of 1987 held its Commencement Exercises at Gadsden's Convention Hall at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, June 5, 1987. Before the ceremonies began, the students gathered outside the auditorium, meeting friends and families, adjusting those caps and gowns, joking, and reminiscing with classmates. Some of them realized that it might be the last time they would see those friends for many years — perhaps forever. As the familiar strains of ''Pomp and Circumstance heralded their processional, there was an air of solemnity among the seniors. They knew that they woula enter the auditorium as students and exit as adults. They would have to look back on good times shared with friends as happy memories while facing the many unknown challenges of their futures. It only took a few minutes to complete the ceremonies, to hand out the awards and diplomas, to sing the alma mater for the last time. A few minutes worth of pomp to end twelve years of hard work ana learning, twelve years of fortitude and fun and friendship. The eighty-eighth annual Commence- ment Exercises included stirring and emo- tional speeches by the class Valedictorian Aimee Hagedom, pictured at right. Philip Nolen, the 1987 balutatorian presented a deeply philosophical oration on pain as an admonition to his classmates to learn from their misfortunes. Class President Mark Moates, pictured at far right, reflected on the memories the class of 1987 had created together since arriving at Gadsden High. Several of the seniors took the opportuni- ty of graduation to share special moments 128 129 LIVING IN 1987 What is it like to be a Gadsden High School student in 1987? The answer to that question requires a close-up view at the world through the eyes of the student — A view which must focus on fashions and fads, music and culture, current events, peer pressures, and even the crises ol our world in the eighties Even then, the perspective may not be correct, because all ol us experience life as individuals, in our own personal ways. At any rate, here is a collection of memories which we hope will always bring you ‘‘home toG.H.S. 1987... 130 GUESS Reebok 132 Above we see three trendy dressers showing off the styles of 1987 — notice the big look and the longer shorts which were in. Bill Sullivan, Paige Jones, and Nikki Tinker, at left, demonstrate the dressy look for students this year. G.H.S. students welcomed warm weather with the ever popular Jams, worn to advantage with tees or sweatshirts and the ever present tennis shoes. Darius Radford, below, shows a stylish way of dressing up during the annual athletic banquet. VIC Multi-colored Guess denims, sewn into skirts, jackets, and jeans, were the season's hottest item. What's in Style Fashion did not consist of one set, rigid style this year. Creating individual looks was made easier with many popular styles. Two big fashion pluses were the use of color and texture. Bright metallics were revived and updated in footwear, handbags, and belts. Many styles applied turquoise or other sto-.ies while some relied simply on texture for a modem flair. Subtler shades remained popular in accessories, as well as in clothing articles. Denim was worn like never before with multi-colored denim sewn into skirts, jackets, and jeans. Fashionable students adopted standard outfits that fit into categorized styles. Some of the looks were feminine, G.Q., preppy, Miami Vice, remembering the 50's and 60's, the conservative look, and the casual look. The feminine style leaned toward the drop-waist dress, popular and versatile lace collars, and flowing hemlines. The G.Q. look for men originated from G.Q. magazine. The style emphasized a cool, sexy look which adopted denim, layering, tee-shirts with sweats, and over-sized sweaters. Preppy looks, which changed constantly, were typical of sorority and fraternity styles. A big preppy wave was Swatches, a type of watch for men and women. They were inexpensive, priced at $30, and came in many designs to match outfits. The popular television detective series, Miami Vice, spun out more pastels for guys with coilarfess shirts, pushed up blazer sleeves, and reinforcing the no socks trend. Remembering the 50's were fashions of full, circular skirts, laced ankle socks, and flat shoes. Out of the 60's eased the mini-skirt, this time most popular in denim. A typical conservative outfit for a girl was a straight skirt topped with a high collared sweater. A guy's conservative outfit was a button- down oxford cloth shirt, a small paisley tie, and a sweater or blazer. And as always, the casual style was in for everyone. Expressed in '87 through over-sized clothing it was, however, classically done in name brand clothing such as Ocean Pacific, Reebok, and the Original Jams sportswear. Money was, as always, a plus for the expansion of a wardrooe, but not a necessity. More clothing discount stores, such as Goody's and the Factory Connection, emerged and became successful. If money was not a problem, many trendy stores catered to tne popular styles for a price. The Mall added Ups and Downs, and Casual Comer to broaden their fashion offerings. For a polished look, accessories were essential. Belts with eye-catching texture and buckles were important. Scarves were worn as belts, sashes, and shawls around the neckline and waist. Costume jewelry, along with basic gold and silver pieces added flair to any wardrobe. Silver puffed hearts were very popular worn on long medium weight chains. Earrings were strong fashion statements ranging in sizes from huge dangling plastic or metallic ones to little gem studs or classic loops. With the adopted style of multi-pierced ears, earrings were often the most noticed accessories. Hair bows and ribbons became wardrobe essentials as the length of hair became generally longer. Hosiery, now available in a multitude of colors, textures, and designs hit a peak. Dotted, striped, or lacy hosiery was worn with pumps and flats. With emphasis placed on handbags, designers sucn as Gucci and Liz Claiborne cashed in on a squared handbag design. Large shoulder Dags were also popular and were offered in seasonal colors. Guess denim jeans and jackets were worn by most fashion conscious men and women, despite the steep cost. Sunset Blues, Levi's 501 and 505's made their mark on casual jeans and pants. Esprit, O.P., and Coca Cola continued variations of their popular lines, typified by comfortably oversized garments with lots of bold colors. Girls preferred wearing shoes to accent color and texture in their outfits. Whether conservative or outrageous, brands like Nine West, Mia, Anne Klein, and Nina made appealing pumps and flats. In the sportier lines Reebok, Kaepa, and Nike were the most popular. Along with tne nationally known clothing designers, two local clothing lines placed tneir mark on G.H.S. fashion. Senior Bubba Barnes designed two tee-shirts. His first creation Shot through the heart red tee was a hit for the Key Club's Valentine Dance, Bubba's second fashion contribution was a joint design with the Crucible Yearbook Staff. This group began marketing senior signature and prom-theme tees 2 years ago and this year introduced an entire line of Event Tees. This line of casual wear aimed at capturing the important highlights of the schoolyear. Forming a fashionable wardrobe was not difficult. Choosing between the endless looks, styles, colors, textures, and brands was the hard part. As always, the most important factor was forming outfits that were comfortable and fit the individual personality. ? ? Shown above, Joanna Wesley models a boldy patterned big sweater, a popular look during fall and winter at G.H.S. Directly above is another example of the big look oversized shirts that were popular for comfort and style. 133 134 Above: ESPRIT was one of the hottest brands. Below are some G.H.S. students cruising to class on a typical day. The bottom photo is lyricist Bubba Barnes, our own 1987 radio star. • • • TOYOTA zztSB John Massey, shown at left, seems at ease with his lifestyle. Massey, along with fellow student Bubba Bames, gained some celebri- ty status by having a song played on Q-104, a popular local radio station. Surveying the G.H.S. parking lot gives an idea of the variety of vehicles students used to cruise through 1987. Cruising Broad Street was a trendy way to spend weekend evenings in Gadsden until May when the city adopted its Cruising Ordinance and set up police check points to monitor the flow of traffic. Tag numbers were entered into computers and citations were issued to any driver passing the same checkpoint more than twice in a two-hour period. Two G.H.S. seniors vocalized their opposition with the following parody of a popular 1987 song by the Beastie Boys ... You ask the chick out, man, she always says NO! So Broad's the only place you've got left to GO! You cruise on down see who you'd like to meet! But the next thing you know they're blocking off the street! Can they do that? You gotta fight, for your right, to cruise Broad Street. The cops caught ya cruising, man, they said NO WAY! If they see ya go by again you'll have to PAY! That new city ordinance is such a drag. Now, when they should be on Second Street tossing out a BEEP! You gotta fight, for your right, to cruise Broad Street! You started cruising Broad, just like they suggested. But ya better watch out or you'll be arrested. Daugette Towers says, WHAT'S THAT NOISE? Our music's not Lawrence Welk, it's the BEA-STIE BOYS! You gotta fight for your right, to cruise Broad Street! Get on the sidewalk man! by: John Massey and Bubba Bames 137 G.H.S. Celebrated the year 1987 by showing Tiger style and spirit ECK THE HALLS Gadsden High Students found as many ways to celebrate dur- ing 1987 as they had reasons to celebrate during such a wonder- ful, fun-filled year. Their demonstrations of spirit ranged from dressing in wild costumes at pep rallies to dressing up to receive honors and awards during assembly programs. Throughout the year, the celebrations continued ... At right, Kathy Domenico seems to be surprised, rather than happy dur ing the reception following Awards Day. Not only did the band score superior ratings at every one of this year's marching band competitions (two of which were held in one day — whew!), but the band also managed to invent entertaining and innovative shows as football season progressed into the playoffs. There was the Mid-South Band Competition, where the Tiger Band stole the show with their version of the “Pee- Wee Herman Rap, and who could forget the band's Halloween show, when everything seemed to go hilariously wrong!
