Obviously our experts were right because the blooming banana tree brought good fortune to Gadsden High during the 1985-86 school year. To date, our football, basketball, and volleyball teams have won area titles. And the outlook is good for our spring sports! Our cheerleaders recently made an outstanding showing at the ICF International Open Cheerleading Competition in Nashville. Tennessee. In the academic department, new advanced placement courses in American History and English joined existing A.P. courses in Calculus and Spanish. Nineteen eighty-six also brought about the organization of Students Against Driving Drunk Chapter here at G.H.S. Heading all of these positive events is our new principal. Mr. Bob Russell. All of the changes and new beginnings are most successful this year. And for this reason we adopted the theme. “Thla It Our Tear.” Though the Crucible Staff did not originate the theme, we did adapt it to our purpose, to provide a foundation of excitement and accomplishment on which to capture the 1985-86 school year in yearbook history! The true theme source... well, we borrowed it from the cheerleaders' optimistic theme for the athletic program. During the fall, the cheerleaders sold Cherry Coke T-Shirts with the THIS IS OUR YEAR slogan on them. The attitude of a bright outlook for G.H.S. spread from this and soon everyone began to believe that this, in fact, would be Our Year. Here's hoping that you will enjoy this, the 60th edition of the Gadsden High School Crucible. May 1986 always be remembered as OUR YEAR — the Year of the Tigers! 7y6ene eoene tuuuf ti neo cue pot dtAcou loped or diAajtyiotxted... ... As a sales incentive this year, the Crucible Staff offered the Senior Color Portrait Reward. The senior portraits appearing in color on pages 16 through 16C are of those individuals selling six or more magazine subscriptions. We appreciate their special efforts! We hope this first time appearance of Senior Portraits in color will become a tradition, begun by the Class of 86. And that each year Tiger Pride will grow along with the number qualifying for this color portrait section. 22 Seniors Best of luck to each and every senior. 4 Ttecv ?cice C i t£e Maw you ever wondered what «was hke to go to • t0f oton country and go to school ther a tor a year? Seniors 25 Putting it Together: Building our Senior Float The building of Homecoming floats is one of the highlights of any school year. For Seniors, work began on our last float on Monday. September 23. 1985. We reported to the Hill Avenue Fire Station, our float headquarters, immediately after school. We first had to round up all of our materials used in previous years' floats such as tiger heads, float sides, etc. After all of that was assembled, work began in earnest. For the most part, work on our float proceeded smoothly. As our theme, we chose 'Tigers Draw First Blood. A tank with a Rambo Tiger in it was shooting down a scrawny panther. For special effects. a fire extinguisher provided smoke for the cannon. Most seniors came to float-building after 6:00 pm everyday. We had plenty of help and some of the seniors really got involved as a team. Thursday night was the most hectic of all. People were rushing around everywhere trying to finish up the float and get the fire station back in order. Late that night, we all quit and went home to catch a few hours sleep before morning. On Friday, we paused an hour to attend the Homecoming pep rally. After we got all fired up for our last Homecoming game, about 15 seniors went to finish last-minute details on the float before the parade. After our float was hitched to Matt Thomas' Jeep, we could all sit back and relax as the Homecoming Parade proceeded down Broad Street. Being a sophomore can be a very exciting time, but also a very difficult one. It is a relief not to be labeled as a “baby tiger. but most 10th graders are awaiting the Golden Age of 16 and until then, feel like they are between being baby tigers (9th graders) and upperclassmen. Nevertheless, the sophomores started the year with a positive attitude. The theme for this year's float competition was Sink the Panthers.” in which they finished 3rd. The sophomores proceeded throughout the year taking part in school activities. First were the homecoming activities and football games in the fall; then basketball season rolled around, followed by baseball season. These are just a few of the activities that sophomores participated in, either as fans, cheerleaders, or players. Then it was time to order class rings. Each school year the sophomore class is presented with the privilege of purchasing one's own personalized ring in memory of their years in high school. A break from tradition came this year... The class of 1988 is the charter class for the New Advanced Diploma and therefore will have to live up to higher standards if they want this honor. ”A sophomore is, ”... someone in the tenth grade!” ANDREW LOVEMAN President “A sophomore is ... happy because they only have two years left in high school. ” TISA MOORE Secretary A sophomore is playing it cool until you are a junior. ” MARY BETH COOK Vice-President ”A sophomore is ... a great thing to be because the people are so nice. ” YVONNE GARRETT Treasurer 42 Sophomores Warren Adams Rodney AlkJredge Trad Archer Bobby Avery Laddie Baird Bobby Baker Michele Baker Tiffany Ballou Reggie Banks Unzy Barber Kelvin Bardford Ray Barrett Randy Beason Kristi Beck Scott Beck Philip BeddingfieW Gerry Benson Veronica Benson Jonathon Best Rodney Blanks Kimberly Blevins Johnny Blood worth Joresa Bothweil Jarme Bowers Barbara Brennan Michael Brewster Mark Brothers Phillip Burchfield Ragan Burchfield Lynn Butler Anthony Byers Karen Calloway Rodney Calloway Buford Cameron Teresa Cash Sherry Clark Mamie Coker Gerald Coleman Bryan Connalty Mary Beth Cook Susan Cowan Tim Cox Pamela Croft Tony Crook Jason Crow Omar Cunningham Micheal Darnell Lisa Dillard Timmy Dobbins Jonathon Doss Micheal Dunn Ray Eason Angela Fomby Beth Foster Dana Garrard Latonya Garrett Yvonne Garrett Paige Giamahra Jonathon Godbev Ledoria GokJsby Bodgett Graham Thomas Graham Jamie Day Andre Deramus Francesca Eastland Chris Fleming Adria Garry James George Brian Green Tina Guice Peggy Guriey Stephanie Gurley Janice Hale Brian Hancock Julie Hancock Todd Hardin Michele Harris Alton Harrold Monique Hart John Hatfield Kevin Heard Chuck Herb Heidi Herrington Eric Higgins Dianne Hoagland Kim Holcomb Joseph Holland Sedrlc Holstick Janice Hooks Sandy Hopkins Eugene Horne Jerome Horton Rita Hoskins Drew Howard Sophilus Hoyt Derence Hughley John Hughley Teresa Ingram MichealJelks Catherine Johnson Dejuan Johnson Angela Jones Rodney Jones William Jones Jimmy Jordan Nichole Kell Heather Kelly April Kendrick Tonya Knight Dirk Lancaster Kai Chin Lien Craig Liggan Carta Malone Teral Marbory Willie Marshall Ken Maudsley Emily McCurdy Robert McElroy Nancy McGuire Kim Micale Vinny Miller Gene Millican April Mitchell Casonya Mitchell Gretta Mitchell Johnny Moore Nathan Moore Tisa Moore David Morgan Stefan Morgan Sharon Murry Marty Myrick Cathy Nails Conway Naylor Donald Nev Kenneth Norwood Kevin O Beirne Beverly Oliver Kathy Palmer Lrndy Partee David Partridge Anthony Patrick Brandi Payne Stacy Pearson Robert Poole Chris Porter Jennifer Ramsey Kim Richardson Dormetnus Roberson Penelope Roberson Dexter Robertson Tammy Robertson John Roden Katie Rozeiie Larry Rozelle Ryan Russell John Rutledge Vicki SaffokJ Parrish Sanders Danmelle Sawyer David Schoenl Brenda Shack Shannon Sherman Jeffery Shimizu Michelle Simon Pam Slay Anmce Smith Craig Smith Donna Smith Misti Smith Donna Snow Kellie Snyder Scott Stewart Adam Stokes Keith Swafford Brian Talton LynnTheil Doris Thomas Jennick Thomas LaTonia Thomas Loretta Thomas Constance Turner Eric Underwood Glenda Veal Jennifer Vice David Waddell Gary Wallace Freida Ward Scott Weatherbee Crystal Weeks Maroe West Matthew White Michael White Teiesia White Clarence Williams Scooter Williams Cynthia Williamson Veronica Wofford Eric Womack Carmilla Woods Andrea Young Photos Not Available Shannon Alston Lanice Barclay Joe Blount Susan Bramblett Sonya Calloway Oumcan Casleberry Julie Davenport Melissa Dobbins Jonathon Douthard Marsha Edwards Susan Gable Angela Gibson Shirley Green Keith Haney Roger Harris Kelly Herran Jenmck Homas Erice Jackson Lewis Johnson Stephanie Johnson Greg Knox Lon Lee Kevin Livesay Wayne Lloyd Jerome McCloud Dana Meeks Timmy Mosteila James Owens Santrienia Rawls Elaine Rector Connie Richardson Christy Roberson Lee Roberts Darrell Rudolph Angie Schnackenberg Larry Smith Howard Spurlmg David Stepleton Stephanie Sumpter Gerald Taylor Larry Warren Andre Wright Picture 1 — Homework on the weekend?!? Although adjusting to the secondary level of education is an enormous job within itself, the ‘ Baby Tigers” soon joined in the other activities. Such as lining up in the office for late passes, food fights in the lunchroom and the all important pep rallies followed by the football games of the fall, the basketball games of the winter and baseball games of the spring. The one detailed project that our new Baby Tiger cubs pounced on and devoured successfully was that of building a float for our Homecoming parade. After much debate ana discussion, it was decided that their float theme should be Punish The Pirates. Upon completion of the float the Freshman class recounted the two or three times they were forced to change locations and the number of mistakes and miscalculations that resulted. However all was taken in a laughing spirit and chucked up to experience for the following years. “I discovered I was a Baby Tiger' when I became a varsity football member. PATRICK McGEE President I discovered I was a Baby Tiger' when I witnessed the pride of the students after the Sansom game. Patrick McGee New Advanced Placement Courses in Advanced Placement English was begun at GHS with seven students enrolled. Mrs. Mary Rose Cowart assigned novels for her prospective students to read the summer prior to the beginning of the class. After spending countless hours reading Crime and Punishment. Grapes of Wrath. War and Peace, and Wuthering Heights, the seven students came to class in the fall prepared to work. After a year of doing research, analyzing poetry, reading, and writing essays, it was time to take the AP English exam. The test consisted of multiple choice questions on a reading selection and three written essays on various subjects. English and American History Started at G.H.S. A.P. American History The 1985-86 school year saw the charter of the very first advanced placement American History class. Mrs. Linda Ford boldly led a small group of brave student explorers across the varied frontiers of history the American way. The class is taught with regard to receiving college credit. The techniques and skills required by the students in the class are similar to those of a college class. If college credit for the course is desired, a student must earn a certain grade on a nationwide exam given at the end of the schoolyear. The exam consists of 100 multiple choice questions, a document based question, and a free response essay question. The time period for these questions ranges from colonial times to President Reagan s second term. AP English and AP American History: Clubs 149 Hi-Y Hi-Y Officers — Front How — Jana Higgins. Students Against Driving Drunk Organized at GHS In the 1985-1986 school year, a chapter of Students Against Driving Drunk (S.A.D.D.) was organized partly because of the death of our friend and classmate. Erik Lyles. S.A.D.D. wants to reduce the number of alcohol-related deaths to teenagers on America's highways. The club advises teenagers to sign a contract of life' with their parents as a promise to call home if they are ever in a drinking and driving situation. The club was very active in its first year. They sponsored drives to reduce drinking and driving, held programs on alcohol and drug abuse, and sponsored an all-male beauty pageant to raise money for the club. We have won this competition for the eight years that the tournament has been in existence. The Math Team also qualified for the second round of the Statewide Secretary School Mathematics Contest. The qualification was based on the team score on a written comprehensive test. Our Advanced Placement Calculus classes have scored far above average on the Advanced Placement exams since May 1984. We have had three fives and the vast majority of our students made a three or above on the 1984 and 1985 exams. Without exception, these students report back that they are not having any problems with their freshman calculus courses in college. Many of them take the credit from their AP exam. Some have reported their college teachers want them to take six semesters hours credit based on their knowledge. Kst to take a class with me... i said that and because I knew him, I believe it was true ... He worked hard every day and did his assignments, and told |Okes and laughed when he wasn't supposed to. He noticed if you were down in the dumps'' and cared if you looked tired: he was a good ol boy with a twinkle In his eye and mischief in his heart and we loved him, Erik wasn't the class hero or the school jock or the Romeo or the future Valedictorian. He was an average guy. like 90% of everyone m this yearbook. He was a son. a brother, a student, a Tiger, a friend. A nice guy who just happened to finish first. In loving memory. Mrs. Byars Gone One day here, the next day gone. It brings so much pain. to have you lost. In that eternal world of love and God. I hope you're happy. I guess you're better off. Staying alive may only have brought the worst. Can you hear us crying? Can you see our tears? Are there really golden streets? Is there really peace? Does something this bad have to happen. to make us see how much we love someone? I wish it didn't. but I know it's true. I hope, dear friend, you know. I still love you. — Andrea Young 162 Challengers JANUARY 28.1M4 1VM.13A.M. We have all worked hard to graduate, but now that the time has come, no matter the pride we have and the eagerness we have to enter the adult world, the step is not an easy one. Personally. I would like to thank my teachers for making Gadsden High such a special place in every way. and for their personal interest in each student. I praise God for the help he has given me in reaching my goals and for my parents who have always supported me. The future looms before us now. We may try to hide and deny its presence or strike forward to reach new heights. But before we go I have one last good-bye for the Class of 1986. It comes from Phllippians 1:3-10 I thank my God every time I remember you. Godbey. She was chosen Valedictorian with an overall average of 98.71. Joy has received a Bicentennial Scholarship and an Honors Scholarship to Birmingham Southern. She will attend Birmingham Southern and major in mathematics. 168 Valedictorian: Joy Godbey Salutatorian Michele Dressman While I have attended Gadsden High School. I have had the best times of my life. There is no way I would trade my high school days for anything. Definitely my senior year was the ultimate greatest! I have grown so much here and have made so many terrific friends. The teachers and the students are the best. Now I must move on to bigger and greater challenges. I plan to continue my interests in mathematics at Birmingham Southern where I will also pursue a tennis scholarship. My advice to underclassmen would be to stay involved in as many activities as possible. Do not overdo it because you must maintain acceptable grades. Set goals and constantly drive yourself towards them. No matter what you decide to do. however, look to the Lord for guidance and strength. In return give Him all the praise and the glory. If you do this, it is amazing how happy you will be! Michele Dressman Salutatorian Michele is the daughter of Frank and Judy Dressman. She held the second highest academic average (98.02) thus being chosen Salutatorian. Michele has received the following scholarships: Birmingham Southern — Tennis. Bicentennial Scholarship from Methodist Churches. Kappa Gamma Delta, and a $1.000 Presidential Scholarship. She will enter Birmingham Southern in the fall and further her education in mathematics. This summer Michele will lifeguard at the Gadsden Country Club and play in as many tennis tournaments as possible. Salutatorian: Michele Dressman 169 Class of 1986 Top Ten Joy Godbey.
