She paused behind Jodie Smith and gently set the crown on his head. The crowd assembled at Convention Hall went wild. No wonder! CORONATION '85 The theme for the 1985 Coronation Ball was Spring Is in the Air. but it just as easily could have been Lights Out or Dancing in the Dark. A tornado and power failure delayed the start of the prom by about two and a half hours and left everyone standing huddled in the lobby of Convention Hall wondering if there was even going to be a dance. For Crucible Staff members and others who so graciously volunteered to help, decorating for the 1985 Coronation Ball began at 6 00 a.m. The day was filled with blowing up balloon hanging streamers, and setting up the stage At 4:00 p.m.. after a long day of hard work, the staff went home to get themselves ready for the dance. By 5:00 p.m.. tornado warnings had been posted for Etowah County. Power was knocked out all over the city of Cadsden. It was not exactly the kind of night suitable for a dance! To make a long story short, power was restored at 10:30 and the leadout began approximately thirty minutes later After all classes had been presented, the magical moment came The 1985 King and Queen were announced |an Brewer. Crucible editor, crowned |odie Smith King and |odie in turn crowned Carole Cain Queen. After the tears of joy were shed |odie and Carole began their reign by opening the Leadout Dance. Nasties shoot giant spit wad at Indiana “Bone.” (Clint. Ray). Sophomore Stunt Night ’85 was entitled “In- diana Bone and the School of Doom.” Written by Philip Nolen and members of the Sophomore class, it highly dramatized our principal Dr. Ar- chie Bone’s arrival at GHS. The school had been taken over by Emma and the Nasties, a band of marauding pirates from Black Creek. “Indiana” Bone singlehandedly wipes them out and restores the Golden Rule that they have stolen. This skit was dedicated to our principal Dr. Bone who is leaving us after three great years. The skit was good enough to get the sophomores second place. G.H.S. students and Indiana “Bone” reclaim school. JUNIOR STUNT NIGHT Junior Stunt Night ’85 was entitled “Will We Ever Win Stunt Night?” Written by members of the Junior Class, the play featured three judges (Betn Godfree, Michele Dressman, and John Beaube) who were trying to pick, from auditions, the people who would win a job in stunt night. Eleven different people auditioned. Among the auditions were: Gena Wills, who sang “My Dead Dog Rover”; Amy Owen and Jennifer Crook, who sang “Geepers, Creepers”; Tom Hudson and Zack Thornton with a ballet act; Paige Thomas, Kelle Keeling, and Trena Lindsey who sang “Feelings”; John Garner as Mickey Mouse; Matt Thomas as California Jones”; Reggie Adams, Wayne Knight, Bruce Lassiter, and Vester Martin did some breakdancing, and Scott Higgins played an electrical, acoustic guitar. 35 “CELNICN Cf THE CLASS CL First Intermission Fall Studenl Life 37 Another year Begins at 6HS Students can’t get enough of the Sansom Pep Rally. For the first time ever Gadsden High qualified for the state playoffs, winning its first game and losing the second by only 2 points to the eventual state champions. Coach Dilorenzo attributed the suc- cess of this year’s team to three factors. First, the quality of leadership by the thirteen seniors. Second, the willingness of the underclassmen to play every game like it was their senior year. And lastly, the great coaching job done by Assistant Coaches Ronald Mayes, Dan- ny Kimble, Jackie Ragland, Wally McDuffie, and Charles Nails. Coaches Wally McDuffie, Ronald Mayes. Vince Dilorenzo. M. Sports 129 Anticipation was building as the seconds ticked away on the clock. The first game of the 1984 State Playoffs rested on the foot of Gary Benson, whose game-winning field goals had become a trademark. Although the temperature was a cold thirty-five degrees, the visitor’s stands of Wildcat Stadium in Fort Payne were packed with Tiger fans. All through the game, the group of students who call themselves the Party Crowd had been cheering and pulling the Tigers through this first contest of the playoffs. Now, with the game on the line, the Party Crowd had moved down to the fence to pray for the field goal. Perhaps there had never been so much anxiety as there was in the thirty seconds prior to the end of that game. The team was in formation and the stage was set. The referee blew the whistle and Gary Ben- son rushed up to kick the hall. All eyes followed it as it sailed through the uprights. Then, in what seemed like ages, the referee raised his arms into the tense night air. Gary Benson had pulled the Tigers through once more as GHS defeated Ft. Payne by a field goal. The Party Crowd went wild, hugging each other, giving high fives, and savoring the victory know- ing there would he a game with arch-rival Sansom to look forward to the next week. Doug Ford, Senior Class president, and originator of the idea, defines the Party Crowd as, A group of students who like to support the football team by cheering, yelling, and making noise at the games. Doug and some friends noticed the non- participation in the pep rallies and decided to make up for the lack of school spirit at the football games. Some Seniors, and eventually underclassmen too, began to sit together as a group. Doug cites their first gathering, the Southside game, as having the best Party Crowd. We had signs, confetti, megaphones, horns, a trumpet, pom- poms, and lots of cheering! With all that school spirit behind them, the Tigers went on to defeat Southside by a score of 41-22. Some players told Party Crowd members that they appreciated the enthusiasm. At the next pep rally, Head Coach Vince DiLorenzo made some favorable comments about the Party Crowd. Cheerleaders Lana Dye and JoNetta Robinson agreed that the Par- ty Crowd made their job of getting the team fired up a lot easier. After the Southside game, the Party Crowd was faithfully at every game, enduring rain, cold weather, and sometimes going long distances to cheer for their Tigers. Almost everyone made new friends and several students really got involved as a team. Some people did make fun of us, but the ones who don't cheer and support the team are always the ones who complain the most if we lose. They are the ones who have problems because they won't release their emotions and cheer or get involved because they let peer pressure get to them. If some- one refuses to be a friend because you show school spirit, then they aren’t worth having as a friend. One day they are gonna look hack and wish they had got- ten involved. As for the future of the Party Crowd, Doug hopes next year’s Seniors start a cheering section. He also thinks it would he good if there could be an area roped off for the Party Crowd. Doug reminds students that anyone can he in the Party Crowd if they cheer or bring something to make noise. He is proud that a potential tradition has been started by the Class of’85! And time will only tell if the Party Crowd becomes a tradition, but there is no question that this group was one of the most remarkable displays of school spirit and unity in the history of Gadsden High School.
