Activities 19 HOMECOMING 1976 Senior Float Sophomore Float Freshman Float SGA Float Tiger band drummers wait to take part in the parade. Color guard takes a break before the parade begins. For the first time in several years the students of Gadsden High had homecoming floats instead of displays. Head Majorette Terry Naughton was crowned Homecoming Queen of Gadsden High Schtx l by Mrs. Joan Patterson. Homecoming Queen of 1951. Terry was escorted by Perry Williamson and SGA President Mike ('line. Activities 25 Christmas Dance CHS students got in the Christmas spirit with a dance sponsored by the SCiA at Convention Hall. December 9, 1976. Students danced to the great music of Smokin . Mary Faye Bowman and Paul Komatcr were named Mr.and Miss Ho-Ho. RIGHT: Smokin is getting set up for Christmas Dance. Activities 35 A Night to Remember The 1977 Coronation Ball, sponsored by the CRUCIBLE Staff, will certainly be remembered. The theme Opening Night” provided an exciting background for the dance. Pam Conner and Wally McDuffie were crowned Queen and King and the featured Band was RABBIT BRANCH. The stage is set for Opening Night.” Coronation Beauties and Escorts Elections of Coronation favorites and kingsmen were held in early spring. The results were announced but the beauty was to be kept in suspense until the night of the Coronation Ball. As each class was presented the beauty was announced and asked to lead her class off the stage. Senior beauties were Rhonda Stephens, Terry Naughton and Dawn Presley. Wally was an active member of the football and baseball team, and held a Senior class office as Vice President. Pam was a cheerleader, member of Phi Omega Phi sorority, member of the Pep Club and was Homecoming maid. They were active members of the Key Club and G” Club. President of the Honor Society was Dale Johnson. Among their activities of this year was a car wash to raise money for the Interclub Council. They also were responsible for the decorations in the hall at Christmas, polishing the trophy cases and putting up school bulletin boards. Activities 53 Triads and Velvetones Tappings The afternoon of May 27 proved to be an exciting and sorrowful day. Exciting for the incoming members of the Triads and Velvetones, but sad for the graduating Seniors. The teary eyed seniors turned over their positions which meant so much to each one. On the night of May 13, two buses filled with Seniors attended Senior Night at Six Flags over Georgia. May 23, was the day set for the Senior Picnic, at Cheeha State Park. The majority of the student activities are planned by the S.G.A., several activities sponsored by the S.G.A. this year include Homecoming, the Christmas Ball, Twirp Week and Twirp Court. They also published the Football Programs and the Tiger Talk. The S.G.A. is run by the students, serves the students, and is for the good of the students. RIGHT: Mike Cline — President. Along with the ad selling to lower the cost of the yearbook, the staff was responsible for the magazine sale, sponsoring the Coronation Ball, Senior Notable elections, and CRUCIBLE pre-sales. Mrs. Smith, the CRUCIBLE sponsor, worked with the staff to see that the yearbook was to get back on an earlier date. The Spirit of GHS grew this year and the CRUCIBLE Staff hopes the events will be remembered as a great year. Magnavox Returns to GHS Due to much hard work and determination the MAGNAVOX returned to Gadsden High this year. Under the leadership of Mrs. M. Velvetones The celebrated Velvetones, directed by Mr. Gene Barnes, lived up to their reputation this year as they received superior ratings at state contest for the eleventh straight year. During the year the Velvetones sang for many civic organizations including the annual Sunrise Easter Service. Triads The Triads under the direction of Mr. Gene Barnes had an eventful and very successful year. The group sang for various churches in the community, and civic organizations within the county. The Triads received superior ratings at district contest and excellent ratings at state contest. They performed on December 17, 1976, with the Velvetones at the Christmas Concert and later in the year, the two groups performed at the Spring Concert held at Convention Hall. Under the direction of president Riley Loftin along with advisors Judy and Bill Drinkard and Jimmy Howard, Key Clubers completed many projects. As the year before, the club sponsored two orphans at the Alabama Sheriff’s Boys Ranch. Key Clubbers also offered their services to a new principal by painting several rooms in the science building. Junior Civitans had a very rewarding year under the leadership of President Matt Nolen and Advisor Mrs. Vance. Before the school year began they painted tiger heads and G.H.S. on 12 trashcans for the school ground. The Junior Civitans also acted as hosts to visiting teams and band during the football season. The Jr. Civitans conducted many community projects. They worked for the National Association for Retarded Citizens. Cerebral Palsy, and Cystic Fibrosis. This year's Science Club was responsible for the entry of first place winner, Wesley Tarvin at the Etowah County Science Fair and the Northeast Alabama Regional Fair. For the first time in history, GHS was represented in the International Science Fair. Wesley received a two year scholarship and numerous other regional and national awards. The Club undertook many projects one of which was a special Christmas party held for all foreign Spanish students at Gadsden State. The Club also hosted many guest speakers for all the Spanish Students at G.H.S. A big project w'as a Christmas Bazaar sponsored by the members to raise money for the Mexico trip. Forty-six Spanish students from Gadsden High toured Mexico for eight days. The trip was a tremendous success due to much hard work on Mrs. Hill’s behalf. Several members traveled to Engineering Day” at Auburn and Engineering Seminar” at Gadsden State Junior College. Club 89 National Honor Society The National Honor Society is an honorary club, whose members were chosen on a basis of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. A sophomore must meet these requirements and have a 98 overall average, a junior must have a 95 overall academic average, and a Senior must have a 90 overall average. The team was under the leadership of Head Coach Tommy White, and Assistant coaches Danny Clayton, David Martin, and Larry Weathers. With no doubt, the student body played an active role in each football game. At every Tiger home game the air was filled with excitement. Sport 117 Tiger Basketball Players Display Strength The Gadsden High School Varsity Basketball Team, under the leadership of Coach Gid Riddle, played their season with great spirit and dedication. The Tigers, at the beginning of the season, got off to a slow start. But after Christmas the Tigers had compiled a great record of fourteen wins and four losses. The team did an excellent job in all their tournament games. They worked hard every game to finish the season with a record of nineteen wins and ten losses. One of their ten victories included a hard played 47-44 win over Sansom. The B’Team finished second out of sixteen teams in the annual Tip Off Tournament held at Butler High in Huntsville. Under the guidance of Coach Gwen Brothers the team put forth their effort for victories. They played their home matches against Albertville, Fort Payne, Hokes Bluff, and Anniston on the courts of Gadsden State Junior College. With each passing game the team showed a mark of improvement being led by Senior Philip Sutcr. The Girl’s team had a winning season with a 2-0 record led by Sophomore Valerie Williams. The new year brought many changes and the revival of some cherished traditions. Under the capable leadership of the new principal, Mr. Clarence Boshell, Gadsden High assumed a new image. It was a year of rotating schedules, semester courses, increased student activities and a tremendous surge of school spirit. Throughout the year Mr. Boshell could be found in places not usually inhabited by school principals. He played the guitar and sang at pep rallies, occasionally called roll on the vocational buses, visited class rooms, attended the school dances and even made a big splash at the Senior Picnic.
