A tremendous group, “Up With People” came and entertained the student body of GHS along with students from Emma Sansom High and Litchfield High. “Up With People” is an independent, nonpro- fit, educational program made up of college-age students from the U.S. and Europe. They brought a real enthusiasm into the hearts of the students, something that will surely be treasured for years to come. 32 Adventure Air Force February 18, the recruiting men from the United States Air Force came to Gadsden High to demonstrate to the Seniors the procedures of flying a plane. The display consisted of a cockpit of a B-52 and a film. Two students in each Democracy class were cho- sen to be the pilot and copilot. To make sure no girls had the excuse, “There’s nothing to do,” the SGA sponsored a Twirp Dance, Friday, April 2, music provided by Freight. All the girls jumped at the chance and the dance was a huge success. Violators Punished Accordingly The fun of Twirp Week is not the dating itself, but rather the punishing of all the violators in Twirp Court. Lynn McKenzie acted as Judge, with Orva McDonald and Lee Perry taking part as Prosecuting and Defense Attorneys, respectively. All Good Things Must Come to an End The culmination of another year came with the annual commencement ceremonies. However, this year was a bit different from years of the past and those yet to come. The class of 1976 presided-a class never to be matched in spirit or enthusiasm. Graduation time was no exception. Many traditional tears were shed as another Senior Class, the one '76. met the end of its wonderful high school years. Adventure 69 Tigers Complete 5-5 Season It was a tough season for the Tiger players, but in regard of all the strong competition. GHS did well. The team was un- der the leadership and direction of Head Coach Tommy White, and Assistant Coaches Donnie Guinn. David Martin, and Danny Clayton. Without doubt the student body played an active role in each football game. Prior to each game, a pep rally stimu- lated both players and students. In the stands at any game, enthusiasm was embodied most in the student section. One could always hear a shout of “Roll Tigers”, or “We’re All Be- hind You Big Team.” The Gadsden Tigers performed with great zest, which is characteristic of Gadsden High. The Tiger football team, though not always winning by points, always won the hearts of their supporters. Basketball Support Increases The 75-76 basketball team completed their season with a 16-11 record. The Tiger team was loaded with talent but seemed plagued from the start with injuries and other prob- lems. Although the Tigers didn’t produce a winning season, they did defeat several of the top teams across the state in an up and down battle. This campaign was the first in which Head Coach Gid Riddle failed to produce a winning team. Despite the lack of success, the Tiger cagers never gave up and proved them- selves to be true winners. Each time swim meet days came around, one was sure that the outcome would bring the Tigers another win. The competitive year ended with the Etowah County High School Swim Meet. Dr. Andrew came to Gadsden High in the fall of 1971 and ends his career as principal here with the gradu- ating class of 1976. Dr. Andrew brought a new' lifestyle to the students and faculty and cannot be forgotten. Dr. Andrew helped this school brave the fire of November 9, 1972, and renew the spirit of the Tigers in the new build- ing. HLs door was always open to questions, new ideas, and even complaints. He was a friend as well as a principal. Through the leadership of Dr. Andrew, the administration and faculty functioned well during the ’75-’76 term. They spon- sored a sockhop after the first home ballgame, the Bicentennial Ball. Twirp Week, the Talent Show, and many more activities to promote student involvement. All in all, the SGA had a most productive year. The SGA year culmi- nated with the election of new officers. This year’s Key Club, as usual, offered non-apathetic students a chance to do something constructive for their school and community. The members cared enough to serve, and serve they did. Under the leadership of presi- dent Mark Leach and the constant support of advisors Bill and Judy Drinkard and Jimmy Howard, key club- bers completed many worthwhile projects. Much effort was directed toward assisting The Alabama Sheriffs Boys Ranch. Two orphans at the Ranch were “adopted” by the club, and visited Gadsden. Key Clubbers visited them at the Ranch and purchased their Christmas gifts. Many cases of light bulbs were sold for the ranch, rais- ing hundreds of dollars. Also, members helped build a new ranch house for the orphans. The second annual Valentine’s Dance was a smashing success, with over 150 couples attending. A basketball game pitted the Key Club Sweethearts against the Jr. Civitan girls. Key Club won. but the real winner was GHS Junior Jimmy Trotman. Over $400 in proceeds from the game helped offset Jimmy’s medical costs after an auto accident. Most importantly, each member learned principles of leadership, caring, and service for which Key Club stands. 142 Fellowship LEFT: Mrs. Drinkard sponsored the 1975-76 Key Club. Almighty God, who has given us this good land for our heritage, we beseech Thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of Thy favor and glad to do Thy will. Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord and confusion; from pride and arrogance and from every evil way. Defend our liberties and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endow with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in Thy name we entrust the authority of the gov- ernment, that through obedience to Thy law, we may show' forth Thy praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness and in days of trouble, suffer not our trust in Thee to fail.... Thomas Jefferson 292 The End 9 V • • ' • '4 t' ’ • i .1 •5 ; v
