But, above all, Gadsden High School is not just cold, inhuman walls, but a very unique spirit. 2 living ... learning ... competing. doing..... being..... supporting finding... 18 68 lOO 132 162 234 252 3 p What a terrific start! The year seemed like it would be the best ever. There was more spirit. The football team was good, the seniors reached their goal, and people really seemed to care about each other. Yes. 1973 certainly had a great 6 The year began to have its rough spots. No homecoming floats, but “class projects. Magazine sales had a slow start. Then there were always tests and assignments which seemed impossible to complete on time. And sometimes loneliness would grasp hold of us. but as Tigers we were strong and we were always able to overcome the hard times However later these problems would seem small in comparison what was about to happen . . . 7 November 9. 1972 . . . What does one do when he sees an old and dear friend dying? Able to do nothing more than stand by in disbelief, thousands gathered and watched the tragic death of one of the greatest ladies they had ever known. She fought as hard as she knew how, but her age of forty-nine years seemed to have mellowed her and she was no match for her hellish red attacker. After a hard fight, she finally succumbed, but she died as she had lived—proud and majestic. All Gadsden mourned as the Tigers experienced death 11 9 72 10 Surely it was just a bad dream. Our school could not have possibly burned. That’s something you see on the news, not something that happens to you. But, it HAD happened. The main building at Gadsden High School had been destroyed by fire. What would happen to us? Would we go to Sansom? Had our permanent records been destroyed? Everyone was in a state of shock 11 10 72 The tears had been shed. Though shock would linger long, reality had to be faced. There was much to be done and those wanting to help found many things to do. It was time to take what was left and fit it together in a new way, but we had to begin by picking up the pieces 15 going on 11 21 72 One of a Tiger's greatest qualities is his versatility. We were able to adjust to the circumstances. Only twelve days after the fire, classes resumed in the remaining buildings and the converted gyms. While others might have given up after such a catastrophe, the Tigers flexed their muscles and got back to the serious business of 16 17 Students Begin School Year The fifth of September was a typical opening day at Gadsden High School. Bewildered sophomores checked the front doors for their homeroom classes. Juniors mingled with old friends while twelth graders enjoyed their first day as true seniors. Both students and teachers looked forward with confidence to the 1972-73 school year. - r , • - . -V,- Z %}' . V Seniors Top Goal After a good start, magazine sales declined sharply during the middle of the campaign when as little as $96 was reported by the homeroom captains. As the deadline grew closer the tigers began to rally. Various clubs including the Checkers, Delta Sigma Chi. and the Band collected money and donated maga- zines to hospitals in order to reach the goal. Dr. Andrew aided the project by giving all seniors who sold at least $122 dollars worth of the magazine subscriptions a day off from school. When it was all over, the 1973 seniors had gone over their goal of $26,000 again proving that they were the best class. TOP CENTER: SI00 Club. 1st ROW: Bryant Banks. Carla Roberts. Students were reluc- tant to pay class dues and some classes were uncertain about how they were going to cover the cost of building a float. When work began on the floats, an incident of some stolen wood arose. Stu- dents were informed that there would be no floats. After tearful ne- gotiations, a group of Student Council members was told that class “projects” would be allowed. The use of cabs and transfer irailors was prohibited. The Tigers went to work. They moved chickenwire frames and crepe paper from the trailors on to pickup trucks and U-hauls. After spending Friday night working, students met on a misty Saturday morning to add last minute touches. In an hour the projects were taken to the dump. The parade was over. The projects were original and imaginative. The queen and maids were lovely. The Tigers came through. 25 Lisa Reigns Over Belated Homecoming Festivities After the parade on Saturday, GHS was supposed to play and beat Anniston in the Home- coming game. Unfortunately, the elements were against the game and at kick-off time it was thundering and pouring rain. The officials announced that the game would be postponed until Monday. On Monday the weather was cooperating. Lisa Longshore was crowned queen and the Tigers defeated the Bulldogs. GHS fan could not have asked for a better Homecoming. RIGHT: Homecoming Court: Cathy Lee. Many things happened at school this year. Senator Sparkman came and made a speech to the first- time voting seniors. He answered their questions and chatted infor- mally with a few of them. Later on in the year, the great GHS band sponsored a concert by the rock group, Chase. It was held at Wallace Hall, Gadsden Slate Junior College. Their performance was well received. The organist for Chase seems to be enjoying himself as much as the audience is enjoying his playing. LEFT: Singer for Chase adds to performance. ABOVE: Rugged Bill Chase charms all the females in the audience with his exciting trum- pet playing. 29 GHS Is Not Just A Building Gadsden High School welcomed students back again on No- vember 20. This time the students did not pass under the white columns and enter the front door to search for their homerooms. Instead they filed into the field house, turned right and sat down on the bleachers. They laughed and joked, but were more sub- dued than on September 5, which seemed so much longer ago than just three months. Dr. Andrew addressed the assembly. He admitted that everyone who loved GHS had suffered a great loss, but he stressed the fact that by working together the spirit of the school would flame despite all obstacles. Students left the assembly still saddened, but encouraged. Students walked by the columns alone, in couples, or in small groups, but united. -:S • ' . On December 11th and 12th, 1972, the GHS Drama Club presented “A Night of Comedy and Suspense.” The Thespians were prouder of this production than of anything they had done before, because it represented the phoenix spirit of Gadsden High. Their stage and all of their equipment-lights, props, and flats—had burned with the school, but thanks to the hard work of the Drama stu- dents and the generosity of the Gadsden State Junior College staff and technicians, they were able to present five successful one act plays in Wallace Hall. “High Window,” a dramatic mystery about a vindinctive para- plegic woman, provided the suspense; four episodes of the old television series “Ethel and Albert” sent the audience home laughing. 32 I OP LEFT: Bill Fobbus. KATY CROWNED IN ROMAN GARDEN On the night of February 17 in the rosy haze of an ancient garden, Katy Sitz was crowned queen of the annual Coronation Ball. The large crowd grew quiet and the beauties stood nervously until King Pete Conner fi- nally placed the crown on the head of the junior beauty. Then the court gathered around and watched as Pete lead Katy off the stage and then shared the first dance with his radiant queen. Coronation Ball 1973 . . . The group, whom the Rolling Stones dubbed “the new Rolling Stones”, also received the honor of choosing the 1973 Corona- tion Ball queen. In a thirty minute interview with Susan. Katy and Amelia the tables were turned as the group asked the girls various questions about GHS and Gadsden. The beauties were then invited to attend the concert as Black Oak’s guests. The group consists of six musicians, Jim Dandy, Dirty Daug- herty, Burly Jett, Goober Grin Knight. Richochet Reynolds and Tommy Aldridge. They played “hot and nasty music” from their new L.P. The big unusual events that hap- pen once or twice in a lifetime, or the small encounters that we experience every day? On April second and third the GHS Drama Club and friends an- swered with Thorton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “Our Town.” The two productions, presented in Wallace Hall, drew larger crowds than any pre- vious Drama Club presentations. Friends included Rayford Etherton of Southside. who played Dr. Gibbs, Sam Geiger of Sansom, and Brad Leach of GSJC, the light technicians, and Steve Brown, the stage manager. The actors were: Emily Webb Gibbs— Tina Hubbard; George Gibbs—Harry Ackerson; Editor Webb-Darryl Nance; Mrs. Webb-Jan Pruitt; Mrs. Bibbs—Melissa Bonds; Rebecca Gibbs—Sara Ruth Cashio; Mrs. Soames-Phyllis Horsley; Howie Newsome-Gary Kilpatrick; Constable Warren-Bill Fobbus; Joe Crowell, Jr.—Kenny Whitt; Simon Stimson Larry Stone. Emily dies in child birth and joins Mrs. Gibbs in the cemetery. They watch as Dr. Gibbs places flowers on the graves. Emily tries to relive her twelfth birth and learns the truth too late that life must be lived minute by minute. ACT THREE Death Students Assemble to Hear Student Council Speeches The assembly opened with the announcement of the 1973-74 candidates by Student Council President Drew Leach. The program was then turned over to Mike McDougal who presented GHS guidance counselor Mrs. Owens with a trophy from the Red Cross. The trophy was awarded to the GHS students for their outstanding participation in a recent fund-raising cam- paign. The money, which amounted to over $500 was collected in each of the English classes. After the presentation Drew introduced this year’s offi- cers who in turn introduced the candidates for their office. Other '72-’73 of- ficers include: Brenda Turner, chaplain; Libby Anderson, reporter; Alan Hare, parliamentarian; Tina Likos, treasurer; Teresa Smith, secretary; and Pete Conner, vice-president. Candidates are: for reporter, Jan Pruitt; for treasurer, Tricia Hill; for secretary, Willean Presley and Becky Dobson; for vice-president, Eva Jo Stancil and Katie Roberts; and for president. Seen around the campus were freckled, pig-tailed girls who could not leave their stuffed bears or all-day suckers at home, others with band-aids and tennis shoes who wanted to play baseball with the boys. Also spied walking down the halls were several cowboys wearing ten gallon hats. Although the little kids were cute, most teachers went home thankful they were not employed at a grammar school. Right: Debbie McHugh latches onto her childhood sucker. Below: Tina Tid- more looks on in disbelief as Gerald Waid rocks a doll. 46 —Fired, Tried, and Rehired The word “fire” hit GHS once again, this time in the past tense, “fired”. The Board of Education voted 3-2 to replace Dr. An- drew. Some cried, some rejoiced, and some were unmoved. After the initial shock, people began to huddle to express their feelings and then the masses formed. Some students boycotted classes and met in the stadium. The Board of Education met again at 4:00 P M. with teachers and parents, and then with students. After these sessions they met in closed session with Dr. Andrew. Newsmen were barred from inside. At 9:00 P.M. the announce- ment was made-Dr. Andrew had been rchired. Some cried, some rejoiced, and some were unmoved. Top left, opposite: A majority of the student body listens as Dr. Andrew expresses his feelings on his dismissal. Each democracy teacher selected several senior girls from the class and ad- ministered a test to them. Of the girls competing, Paula made the highest score and represented GHS in a state contest. Parnell, Campbell, and Brock Chosen for Boys’ and Girls’ State Juniors selected Ann Campbell. John Brock, and Kim Parnell to represent them at Girls’ and Boys’ State. There they learned more about how the state government operates and also had a chance to meet more out- standing students from all over the state. 48 Sherry Bright .96.400 Libby Anderson Lonnie Williams Carla Roberts. Graduation 1973 was held in Murphree Stadium. A-L seniors were seated to the left of the speakers’ platform, while the remaining seniors occupied the seats to the right. The theme for graduation was ‘The Road Not Taken.” This theme was presented vocally by graduating members of the Triads and the Velvetones under the direction of Mr. Gene Barnes. The traditional commencement speeches were made by Valedictorian Paula Hin- ton and Salutatorian Joe Ransaw. Junior and sophomore band members, in addition to playing the processional and recessional music, enter- tained with selections from “The Man of La Mancha.” 60 Valedictorian Paula Hinton. Charlene Harbin received an award for twelve years of perfect attendance. Joe Ransaw was named the recipient of the Frank Cottle Award for the most out- standing senior boy. Paula Hinton was awarded the Julia Rhinehart Hughes Award which is given annually to the most out- standing senior girl. Bobby Cargo took top honors when the Cross Cup for the most out- standing senior was presented to him. Grad- uation night was an appropriate time to rec- ognize these deserving seniors. '9 GHS Bids Farewell to Seniors What can you say about graduation? That it was held on May 31, 1973, at 7:00 p.m. in the stadium. That it did not rain. That is was over by 8:30. That parents were proud. These things were all true, but there are many things about graduation that were less obvious. Graduation was a time of ending and beginning. Of remembering good times and bad, and of contemplating the future. It was a time of preparing to meet new ones. All graduations seem pretty much the same, but there is always one that stands out in every person’s life. That is his own high school graduation. “You’ll search the earth from sea to sea. And find no better than ’73!” 64 Proud parents strain to get a glimpse of their senior. Pete Abel receives his diploma and becomes the first graduate of the Class of After twelve vears. the long awaited moment is over. 1973. School Ends As Work Goes On School was dismissed on June 1, 1973. For some it was the be- ginning of another summer vacation, for others it was the end of a three year career at GHS. The 1972-'73 year was a hard year and a sad one for both students and teachers, but in many ways it was also a good year. As cars pulled out of the parking lot. . workers remained, constructing a building for next fall which will be new, and with God's help, will make Gadsden High jp - School even better. 19 Administration Strives for Better Education for Students M—m. For the past two years Gadsden High School has been under the leadership of Dr. Phil Andrew. Dr. Andrew was always in his office to offer his assistance to both faculty and students alike. In May of 1972. Dr. Andrew along with the faculty worked out a plan for classes, for the school year of 1972- 1973. For the first time in two years, students registered for class. Registration was held in the Field House. Classes were limited to only thirty or forty students per class. This was an ideal system. After the fire Dr. Andrew- was faced with the problem of fourteen-hundred students without a school. Again Dr. Andrew worked out a schedule using the remain- ing buildings. The old gym, girl’s gym. music and lunch- rooms, and science building became Gadsden High School. Classes now contained anywhere from 50 to 150 students. No matter what one’s opinion of Dr. Andrew- is, he is a man who has to be commended for the fine job he has done at Gad- sden High School 70 Working under Dr. Andrew were Assistant Principals. Lawrence Presley, and Don Bulger. Both of these men were always ready and waiting to help. In March. Mr. Bulger left Gadsden High School for another position at Sardis High School. Mr. Owens returned to take over Mr. Don Bulger’s position as Assistant Principal after Mr. Bulger left. 96 STUDENTS Administration, teachers, and students; a school is composed of all three. Without teachers and students there is no use for administra- tion. Students without teachers and administration accomplishes nothing. Teachers without administration or students are useless. All are of equal importance, one no more or less important than the oth- ers. For a school to obtain its ultimate goal, education, there has to be unity among administration, teachers, and students. This year at Gad- sden High School unity was needed more than ever. We all faced many problems, changes, and disappointments. But together we over- came these. Where ever we go we can be proud that we, administra- tion, teachers, and students, are Gadsden High Tigers. 99 ■ . With new coaches and many young players, the capable team had a great season. On September 1, the Tigers journeyed to West Rome, Geor- gia. Gadsden was badly beaten and returned home with a loss on their hands. The Tiger pride had not been broken and the next three games were Gadsden victories. The Tigers marched over Sansom, Butler, and Etowah before being stopped by Berry. The following two clashes brought Tiger victories over Anniston and Talledega. This brought the sea- son record to five wins and two losses. One week later, Gad- sden fell to Huntsville by a one point margin. The Tigers ended the season with a tremendous 47-20 win over the neighboring Sansom Rebels in the annual Charity Bowl. Front Row. mgr Rusty Hare. Paul Tinker. Robert Furguson. Jerome Harris. Under the direction of Head-Coach Gideon Riddle the Tigers finished the season with an outstanding record of 20 wins and 8 losses. Some of the returning veterans that carried the load were Al Knowles, Harding Leach, Mike Dunn. Marvin Jen- kins, Alvin Bolden, and Ricky Brown. Brown made All-State and after many of- fers. he signed a scholarship with the Uni- versity of Alabama. Gadsden averaged more than 50 points per game with the highest win being over Benjamin Russel (81-40). After you’ve shared the blood, sweat, and tears of all the years together, there is a closeness between you. We’ve shared the joys and sorrows of band competition, and through it all, we’ve kept a great traditional spirit. The Tiger spirit could make anything great. 155 . . . and the beat goes on GHS Band Students moved band equipment to a nearby church, while the school burned. This was a year of hardship because of; the burning of the school, the crowded classrooms, lack of books and materials, no talent show, and a rescheduled graduation. After the fire at GHS, the Charity Bowl game proved real spirit and vic- tory. Randy 201 Yow, Sandra The Curcible Staff would like to apologize to anyone whose picture was left out of this year's annual. Many seniors and juniors failed to make an appointment to have their pictures made and some sophomore pictures were lost in the confusion after the fire. Also it was difficult to schedule the club pictures at a time convenient to all club members. The staff tried to do its best and if any feelings were hurt, it was unintentional. Yes. the Tigers flexed their muscles and got back to the serious business of going on. They had all experienced the year's great beginning. . . hard times . . . death . . . shock . . . and as the year suddenly came to a close, they begin to see a new Gadsden High School emerging, one w ith a changing set of atti- tudes and ideas......and the old Gadsden High School they had all known was becoming only a distant memor)'. this was gadsden high school—1973 264
