THE 1961 SENIOR CLASS AN INSPI THE GADSDEN D CRUCIBLE STAFF RED BY HIGH TIGER PRESENTS GADSDEN HIGH SCHOOL 607 SOUTH 12th STREET GADSDEN, ALABAMA 5 fc FOREWORD Within these pages we hope to emanate the ardor of the G.H.S. mascot, who, mighty in his domain where he fears no one and no thing, is the spirited tiger. Courageous, bold, fearless and ever self- reliant is he; may we carry this spirit within our hearts throughout our lives as we leave this school and seek our true place in this DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF ... In dedicating this annual to Mrs. Era Sewell, it is felt that it will serve as a monument to her vigor, zeal, and interest in her students. A dedi- cated teacher with a true love for her profession, she will live on in the hearts of all whom she taught and had association with. Inspired with this confidence and attempting to express our deepest respect, we, the Class of ’61, dedicate this Crucible in memory of Mrs. Era Sewell. 10 IN MEMORY OF TOMMY JOHNS. . . I cannot say, and I will not say That he is dead. He is just away! With a .cheery smile and a wave of the hand, He has wandered into an unknown land. And left us dreaming how very fair It needs must be, since he lingers there . . . —James Whitcomb 'Riley 12 JERRY MIZELL. . . . Curriculum Activities Organizations Classes Graduation Advertisements CLASS OF ’61 Challenging New Frontiers”—As Sopho- mores the Class of ’61 entered G.H.S. as the largest class ever to enroll. Certain that our highest goals could be obtained, we faced the New Frontiers” open to us. Working diligently to produce an out- standing float our Sophomore year, we were more ambitious than experienced. Our float entitled Cremation of the Poets,” was sunk in its expert construction. Our great showing of the year came when we presented our exotic talent show Tropi- cal Dreamers.” The untiring efforts of our sponsors, Mrs. Cantrell and Miss Masters, boosted the ego of the cast. Excited at the thought of the royal Coro- nation Ball, we cheered Sandy Olson on as our class beauty. The New Frontier” of our Junior year tipped around to find us upperclassmen at last. With more experience we initiated our second year by winning the Blue Devil Contest. Toiling earnestly on our float, “Eat Em Up Tigers, our class encouraged the team to victory. Our extraordinary talent show, County Fair, U. S. A.,” exemplified the originality of our class. Once again, with high hopes and starry eyes, we watched Diane Miller, our class beauty, waltz through the Coronation Ball. As Seniors, we pioneered in New Frontiers” by exceeding all past goals in magazine sales with a total of $15,112.52. Tigers Strike Again” was the title deemed on our final class float. Our homecoming game found Carol Duke crowned as Homecoming Queen. Backstage Tryouts,” our climaxing talent show, walked away with top honors. Our unusual Valentine Program was acclaimed by everyone. Diane Miller again represented our class as beauty at the Corona- tion Ball. We were also exultant because Webb Sledge, our class president, was elected reigning monarch of G.H.S. Regardless of our willingness to work on any project at hand, we could never have succeeded without our challenging sponsors, Mrs. Luker and Mrs. Bullock, who worked with us through our memorable Junior and Senior years at Gadsden Senior Class Officers are: President, Webb Sledge; Vice President, Larry Keener; Secretary, Vicki Estes; Treasurer, Beason Campbell. The sponsors are Mrs. Luker and Mrs. Bullock. High. The efforts of the Seniors were well rewarded by the many honors and scholarships bestowed upon them during the Honor Assembly. At this time our class president, Webb Sledge, accepted the Class of the Year Award, which proves that We’re bigger, we’re better, we’re full of fun, we’re the Class of ’61.” 18 RALPH S. ABNEY, JR. The sponsors are Mrs. Marshall and Mrs. Shamblin. CLASS OF ’62 We, the Class of ’62, feel that we have accomplished much in our two years in Gads- den High School. Winning first place in the Talent Show competition our Sophomore year, we presented our masterpiece “Old Black Magic. We were all very proud of our class beauty, Miss Kathy Sauls. We started our Junior year off right by winning first place with our Homecoming Float Blot 'em out Tigers.” Although our Talent Show did not win first place, we felt it was a wonderful production. Our class was well represented by our beauty, Miss Sheila Brogdon, at the Coronation Ball. 60 Abernathy, Jimmy Adams, David Ambers on, Melba Anderson, Richard Ashley, Jimmy Atkins, Jean Bailey, David Ballard, Glenda Barker, Jimmy Barnes, Bonnie Barnett, Glenda Baskin, Hugh Bass, John Battles. CLASS OF ’63 On September 7, I960, a very large group of teenagers entered the halls of Gadsden High School and soon became known as the Class of ’63. Everything was strange but very exciting. Soon the disease called school spirit invaded us, and we discovered quite readily who our football rivals were. So before the very important ball game the prize winning blue devil came into existence. Then came the floats. It seemed quite strange to work many long, hard hours on what seemed an impossible goal. Many lasting friendships were made while the float was being built. A discovery was then made: the Class of ’63 had talent, and the sophomore talent show Memories” was an instant success. They’ll never find him in here. 'I give up.’ 107 OUR BUILDING Our building, which had remained untouched since it was built, finally received the atten- tion it has warranted for so long. The repairs, which restored the building to mint condition, cost more than the original building did. Many additions were realized in that the auditorium was enlarged, the stage widened and deepened, color lights added, library made larger, and a student activity center built in the basement. Our thanks is offered to the workmen for the fine work which they have presented her. Workers were still working in earnest as late as registration day. Our diligent crew of workmen assemble desks to be used in the remodeled classrooms. IS REMODELED SCHOOL BEGINS WITH Seniors wait as teachers get set up in the lunchroom. Tuesday, September 6, i960—R.Day— Registration Day! Once again G.H.S. be- came a seething cauldron of Pandemonium within and without—the seniors within the confines of the lunchroom and the juniors and sophomores on the tennis court. Inevitably there were schedule cards that refused to work out, old friends reminisc- ing, weary teachers hoping for relief, and snarled streets and parking lots. But by the day’s end, form and order emerged over the class of trampled toes and the outbursts of despair and chagrin. Stu- dents could almost look forward to Wednes- day morning and regular classes. R-DAY... Players are led on the field by the cheerleaders. Cheerleaders warm up at pep rally in the stadium. PEP RALLIES, Snake dance followed up the seniors’ last Etowah pep rally. SPIRITS RIDE HIGH 113 EXCEED $15,000 - SENIORS SET Windy takes G.H.S. by storm. MAGAZINE CAMPAIGN Judging from the record which shattered all previous ones in the history of magazines sales at Gadsden High School, the 1961 Seniors must be comprised of superior salesmen. The first day’s soliciting amassed a whopping $5,339 worth of subscriptions. When the final sale was tallied up the grand total soared to $15,112. Salesmen setting the highest totals were first place Gennie Patterson; placing second was Steve Copeland; and rounding out the trio was Carol Duke. Gratitude is extended to Mrs. Bullock, Mrs. Luker, and Mr. Amis, who worked as hard as any Senior in keeping the campaign progressing at a fast clip. Class officers and magazine captains were constantly on the job to push the ‘61 record to its historical victory. Cash prizes were awarded the foot-weary and finger-fatigued but nevertheless happy top-notch salesmen. Mr. Amis’ huge gift of chocolates was a welcome reward to all Seniors. It was a campaign well done, thoroughly enjoyed, and highly gratifying. Mr. Amis and Mrs. Luker open the campaign with a pep talk which included the necessary details. I 14 Mr. Amis, who gave his word to praise Allah if the '61 Seniors beat last year, holds true this promise. NEW RECORD Magazine Winners were Nancy Rogers, Martha Blackshear, Gregory Cusimano, Carol Duke, Karen Long, Pat Rowland; Avril Wilbanks, Marvin Self, Walter Arnold, Steve Copeland, Larry Frost, Genie Patterson, Virginia Thompson, Jo Ann Tolleson, Robert Nabors, Wayne Humphrey, Bobby Jones, Howell Pruett, Bill Basenberg, Taylor Hardy, Grace Bradbeer, Kay Oliver, and Cathy Rutherford. Versatility and variety—the spice of the show—made a hit of well rounded entertainment with both the judges and the audience. Everyone had a word of praise for the show. Big cheese and assistants. TAKES FIRST PLACE JUNIOR TALENT SHOW HARBOR LIGHTS” CAPT Setting up house” keeping? Can I show you my lighthouse? “Harbor Lights,” given by the Juniors, was a well-balanced and well-rounded array of talent bent on the sole purpose of enter- taining. Against a seafaring background, which featured a large lighthouse, Tommy Dubose, as the lighthouse keeper, used a telescope to cue in on the various musical skits, songs, and dances. The whole show made for exciting enter- tainment. 126 Lifesavers. Four delicious flavors. URES SEA SPLENDOR SOPHOMORE TALENT SHOW MEMORIES ” BRINGS The setting of the sophomore talent show was an old attic which contained many ob- jects that had memories associated with them. The objects brought forth their memories in the form of acts which, indeed, were widely varied and colorful. Bringing the objects to light in the dusty old attic was a realistic looking grandpa who had a grandpa’s every characteristic. At the end of the show, all the acts gath- ered on the stage for the grand finale. Diligent digit. ABOUT NOSTALGIA Yeah, but what does it spell? Somber Songsters. This project has been a dream in the mind of Mr. Dobbs, the faculty, and students for several years. This year we were privileged by the opportunity of having this dream come true. Recreation in the Activity Room in- cluded a juke box, ping-pong contests, and Limbo contests. Prizes such as picture show passes were given to the winners. With more furniture and games, the Activity Room could really be the center of student gatherings at Gadsden High School. Located next to the Activity Room is the new Bookstore. The Council buys supplies for the Bookstore and keeps them in stock for the benefit of the students. Profits from the Bookstore go into the Student Council Fund which is spent on various school and council needs. Another main project of the Council is the Student Hand- book. The handbook contains the names, addresses, and phone numbers of all the students and faculty at Gadsden High. It also contains a list of all clubs and their officers plus a section of cheers. An unforgettable night was that of the Valentine Dance sponsored by the Student Council. NEW ACTIVITY ROOM During football season the Council sponsored the sale of football programs. This is the biggest money-making project of the year. After the games the Council sponsored several sox-hops to be attended by all conquering heroes and attentive fans. Refreshments were served and we were fortunate to have the Kingsmen play. The V.I.P.'s of the Student Council rode in the Homecoming Parade. The next three seasons, the Tiger teams marched to blazing marks of 9-0-1, 7-2-1, and 9-1. Last year, the Tigers suffered unfortunate circumstances on a couple of occa- sions and finished with a 4-5-1 record. During his five year career at Gadsden High School, Coach Watford has compiled a very impressive 30-14-5 record. Surely we, the student body, are very sad to learn of Coach Watford's leaving G.H.S., and we wish him as much success as he has had with us. 188 COACH ROBERT McKEE Coach McKee received a B.S. and M.A. degree from Auburn University. The won-lost record of the team was not very impressive. They won four and lost thirteen. Most of the ones that they lost were against teams that have been in wrestling for many years. Although the team’s record was not too good this year, we, the students of G.H.S., can look forward to the years when Gadsden teams will control the State Tournament. GARY McBRIDE 145-lb. Physical education plays an important part in Gads- den High School’s program of general education. The girls attending these classes receive practical training that prepares them mentally and physically to meet the demands of both body and mind in the pace-breaking speed of our changing times. Our school provides the most up-to-date equipment and best trained instructors available to carry out the program in: gymnastics, volleyball, basketball, and tennis. From September to May the Physical Education students spend some profitable fun-filled hours in the gym and on the athletic field. 230 On your toes—girls! ! Each girl waits patiently for her turn.
