Editor-MARY LANE HOLLAND Business Managers HARRIET GORDON JOHN LEACH IN MEMORY OF KENNETH FOX DON TIDWELL We live in deeds, not years; in thoughts, not breaths; In feelings, not in figures on a dial. We should count time by heart-throbs. He most lives Who thinks most, feels the no- blest, acts the best. And he whose heart beats quickest lives the longest: Lives in one hour more than in years do some Whose fat blood sleeps as it slips along their veins. Life's but a means unto an end; that end. Beginning, mean, and end to all things—God . . . -PHILIP J. BAILEY DEDICATED TO... The 1959 Crucible is dedicated to you, Mrs. Anne Williams, because you have added so much to the lives of Gadsden High Seniors. We will leave these halls to live a richer life because of contacts with you. As a Senior homeroom teacher you coaxed and pushed all of your Seniors into selling loads of magazines by supplying those who reached their goals with cokes and candy. Our Senior banquet would never have been such a lovely combination of enjoyable stunts and beautiful decorations had it not been for your untiring efforts. Because you are always busy and eager to do something different ; because you are such a wonderful person and an asset to Gadsden High, we dedicate the 1959 Crucible to you. These were the words which inspired the Seniors to super jet down the street to high pressure their neighbors into buying $14,000 worth of magazines. While scientists were sending rockets to the moon, the students of Gadsden High were registering. Everything was chaos, but we were all glad to be back in the halls ringing with sounds of old and new friendship. Once again the doors of Gadsden High were swung open for students. Modern education was off with a blast as tele- vision chemistry was started. Homecoming rolled around. We worked very hard on our first float which we felt was a work of art. For green freshmen, our talent show, The 6400 Mile Question, was very original and we thought it was great although it did not place. Next came the sophomore year. We were not as scared now, and we determined to make the other classes sit up and take notice of us. Our class beauty, Betty Sue Denson, represented us, for the second time, at the annual Coronation Ball. To start our junior year off with a bang, we produced a wonderful float, Another Victim, which captured first prize in the Homecoming parade. We were equally proud of our talent show, Dear Diary, which received the second place honor. Our candidate for queen was Celia An- dersen. We are great! We are fine! We're the class of '59! We proved our ability in the magazine campaign by topping the school record by selling $14,- 500.00. We were proud of our Homecoming float and also our Home- coming Queen, Pinkie Patterson. Our talent show, On the Levee, cap- tured first place. It was a wonderful show—one to be proud of. Our class beauty. Miss Brenda Lowery, was selected as Queen of Gadsden High School at the impressive Coronation Ball. We sincerely hope that as we leave Gadsden High School and take our places in life, we can make Gadsden High proud of the class of 1959. 0 r- O JOHN LEACH G,%« RRO Vice-Pres1 AAARTHA BUSH Treasurer 'O Oi 'O BARBARA ANNE ADAMS DO Club; Student Council Rep- resentative; Magazine Captain; Choral Club; Ring Committee; Junior-Senior Picnic Committee; Talent Show Committee; Girls' Softball and Basketball Team; Crucible Subscription Staff; Home Economic Club; Junior Red Cross Representative; Foot- ball Sponsor. Stars 820 Vanguard Way Atlas City, Moon Dear Ira: I was thinking today of how lonely it is here on Earth now that practically everyone has blasted off to the far corners of this Universe. I can't realize that it has been exactly thirty years since we were graduated from Gadsden High. Last year the Alumni Society appointed me editor of the Alumni News. I have been very busy since then collecting juicy bits of information, and you would be surprised at what I have learned. President of the U. S., Bob Bentley, has taken a golfing vacation to get away from the troubles of the Universe. Accompanying him is his Secretary of State, Barbara Cheatwood, Secretary of Treasury, Martha Bush, and Vice-President, Lanny Taliaferro. Soon to join them is Four-and-one-half-star General, Bill Tarvin, who has just returned from defeating Mahlon Jones' Plutonian Rebels. Jack Von Campbell, aided by supertechnicians, Celia Andersen, Freddy Glazner, Ronald Parker, Carolyn Barrett, Rebecca Owens, Marilyn Pinson, and Donna Vaughn, has now orbited a satellite around a satellite which contains Don Wesson and Jimmy McGuire. I hope they didn't forget their chess board. I know you remember Jane Moss, Pinky Patterson, and Stephanie Yother. They have resorted to rocket travel to the University of Alabama because James, Gene, and Bobby haven't managed to pass basket weaving yet. Gusty Nordgren, Billy Pruet, Harold Morris, Larry Metcalf, and Gerald Hicks are manufacturing basketballs of a synthetic Mars Mush for Sansom teams. Pat L. Long has been promoted to a lieutenant of the Vice Squad. Speaking of squads, Yolanda Yeager, Betty Striplin, Peggy Thompson, Jo Anne Foote, Jane Martin, Brenda McElroy, Connie Swindell are forming a rocket train to pioneer Saturn and raise little Blue Devils. Cathie Glosser, traveling around the Universe, has announced her coming crusade for the establishment of a Red Cross Bloodmobile on all the 27 known planets. Larry Walker and Joyce Stewart Thrasher designed new space helmets shaped like Red Cross caps to be worn by volunteers, Nancy Middleton, Connie Crain, Jane Belyeu, Sally Brittain, Polly Cecil, and Linda Clark. I feel very sorry for that dear Harriet Gordon, who directs the Harvard Dramatic Club. You know, she just produced her tenth flop, entitled The Chemistry of Love. Her wealthiest supporters include Donald Moon, Larry Steele, Carl Cook, Randall Moore, and Hubert Campbell. It is a good thing she has wealthy supporters continued on page 70— SENIOR 64 Kiddies. CLASS PROPHECY continued from page 63— because her two main stars, Enoch Andersen and Dicky Draper contracted anti- proxethous (stage fright). Last night I went to P.T.A. where they presented life-membership to mothers, Terry Brown, Judy Baker, Gail Chance, Lucretia Black, Keatha Harwood, Linda Bryan, Rita Salvador, Judy Jolly, Ellen Waller, Raydelle Perry, and fathers, Philip Crain, Terrell Wallen, and J. F. James. Rudy Connor and Bobby McCurley have decided to dedicate themselves to fulltime Y.M.C.A. service, and with the help of Sonny Taylor, are busily perfecting round worlds for Hi-Y floats. We just had a wedding in town. Carole Dilworth, with the help of Mr. Davie, has finally trapped her a rich Chi Phi from the University of Alabama. Joan Smithey said this is the last time she would play the organ for a Gadsden wedding, because she has been offered a job at Annapolis playing taps every night. Besides, she goofed at Carole's wedding and caused the Matron of Honor, Linda Lane, to fall on the Reverend Gary Atkins, who smashed Susan Hamilton and her camera. The out-of-town guests included such celebrities as Patty Hackett, who just dis- covered an ancient city in Africa; Stancil Gaither, renown space travel hair stylist; Anne Womack, who has just announced her autobiography, My True Life ; and noted educators, Anita Algee and Jane St. John, who have been teaching artificial respiration to lungless Martians, after John Dickson and Jerry Jones taught them to swim instead of fly. Tommy Martin, the new Zorro, left his mark on the Rear Admiral, George Brugge. Do you remember our class beauty. Miss Brenda Lowery? Well, she won the Miss Universe title. Wayne Ozment has his own interplanet TV station, WGHS. My favorite program is Martian Melodies, starring that famous duet, Tim Latham and Mary Inza Street, sponsored by Alice Warren's Winston Cigarette Company, which she owns jointly with John Hatley. Charles Owens, Billy Rich, Layton Smith, and Ronnie Davis have finally made Muskrat Ramble famous, thanks to W.G.H.S. Bobby Owens has given up putting hydrogen sulfide bombs behind doors and is now Gadsden's Police Chief. Levon Pentecost has had his thousandth reckless driving arrest. Randall Thompson and Donald Stuckey own a chain of carpet golf ranges, with Robert Jackson as chief pro. Gary Wells' Black Market on school function tickets is booming. Salesman, Ray Jordan, is now selling his preferred perfume. Night in Rising Fawn. Ann Pennington has been promoted to President of the Who Cares Department. New faces have finally taken the place of some of our teachers. Sandra Barron is now teaching English, voibs and advoibs; Jack Aired has replaced Watford as head coach; Lillian Rattray has followed suit, and has taken over Senora Hill's place; and Judy Lamberth is now teaching the typing classes at G.H.S. Pat Barrett is doing an able job as sponsor of the F.T.A. and Tri-Hi-Y. The Honeymooners, Martha Moyer and Mike Spraggins, Joanna Glasscock and Larry Rozelle, Robena McDougal and Donald Gramling, Ann Girten and Frank Smith, Ralph Phillips and Jerre Sue Bailey, had a delightful time at the Venus Veranda (Swankiest hotel in the Universe). They were astonished to find Byron Griffith, James Vines, Eddie Hutcheson, and Larry Honeycutt working as bell boys. « Ben Johnston, the maintenance man, was busy on the 131st floor trying to fix the elevator which Bobby Coheley drove through the roof. The Yellow Room was featuring the fantastic act of Nancy Brown, Sandra Hollo- way, and Jennie Ashley who tap dance and twirl on the table tdp held up by Ronal Cox, who sings I Like You Fine, accompanied by Shelby Cleland alias Piano Red. Carrol Hollingsworth's guitar is the filler between acts. House detective, Jerome LaFollette, caught Charles Smith, Billy Keeling, and Mary Davis stealing bath towels. Hotel managers, Milford and Wilford Bishop, are looking for new desk clerks because Ronald and Donald Swindell, the old clerks, are serving life sentences in Kilby Prison. Meanwhile, back at the new corral, the Kentucky Derby is under way. We heard from the horse's mouth that Nancy Godfrey and Joan Archer are entering the race. We don't know whether or not they plan to use horses! Bill Sprouse is the chief bookie, and Shirley Rose is his assistant. Speaking of horses and grooms, Joyce Kish and Bettye Herman are now brushing pony tails at the stables. J. D. Hill's cheerleading voice is booming over the loud speaker as he announces the races. While flying through space on our magic carpet, I was flagged down by space cop Dan Campbell on his interplanetcycle; but because Lydia Sheffield winked one big brown eye at him, he let me go. I rambled around on the moon and paid homage to the President of the Moon People, John Leach. Bill Firestone has beaten Arthur Murray to the moon and opened his own dance studio. The Milky Way Little Leaguers are coached by Joe Elrod and Bobby Raines, and Jerry Tumlin is teaching little Martians to play football. My next jump was to the Ultra-Ultra Shopping Center which is conveniently located halfway between Saturn and Mars. I needed money, so I dropped in at the bank. President of the bank, Charles Baswell, directed me to his first teller, Pat Brothers. On my way to Pat, I tripped over Frank Camp who was lying down on the job. Jack Boggan quickly replaced him. Barbara Adams is the vault guard. As I left, I saw Claude Beacham and Betty Cargal borrowing money to finance a 1 7 cent Space Burger Stand. We started the year right by having Jan Lowi and Ronald Cox elected Mr. and Miss Congeniality. Our Homecoming float, Tigers K. O. Panthers, wasn't perfect, but we felt it was up to the mark for our first try. Linda Hand, our chosen beauty, represented us excellently at the Coronation Ball. Our year was made complete when our talent show, Searchin', came across with flying colors, first place. Under the able leadership of our junior class officers, our second year started off with another big bang! Our Home- coming float, Mow 'em Down, sailed away with first place. This added another spark to our enthusiasm. Our talent show, Modern Mother Goose, did not place this year, but we shall always feel it was fabulous. Then came the big moment to select our class rings. SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY The class of '61 arose from Disque and Litchfield and con- verged on Gadsden High School strongly, being one of the largest classes on record. Orientation began with the an- nual round-up in the auditorium from which moment the sophomores began to affirm their determination to make a name for themselves. The class of '61 really showed its true spirit of coopera- tion in working 100 per cent on the Homecoming float, pro- ducing one of the best, Cremation of the Poets (Sidney Lanier). And for the talent show, we had more volunteers than we could use! Under the leadership of our sponsors, Mrs. Cantrell and Miss Masters and our committee, we pro- duced the unforgettable Tropical Dreamers. The sophomore class was well represented in all the worthwhile activities such as band, choral union, Tri-Hi-Y, F.B.L.A., Student Council, and civic drives, admirably carry- ing out its motto, We're bigger, we're better, we're full of fun; We're the class of '61! Glosser as our sweethearts as a small token of appreciation for their loyalty and unselfish service to our class. We shall always be very, very grateful. This year the senior class is honoring two people whom we love and respect very much. Two people in whose hands rests a sacred trust—that of the education and guidance of future citizens. The teaching conditions at Gadsden High are certainly not ideal, but because of their faithfulness these two have remained in the field of education. It has been recently said,, The quality of the faculty is the key to educational success. Certainly any educational institution would be proud to number both of these fine teachers among its faculty. Because of their patience, understanding, and dedication to their task, these two have had a profound influence on the lives of countless young people. 162 r •MtfS.vWv’v v.y. Tackle Bobby Rogers caught it and sprinted 40 yards for a six-pointer. Moments later Ham Adams sliced through for the P.A.T. In the second quarter Gadsden again scored with Adams going over. In the fourth quarter, after a pass from Tommy Smith to Jimmy Brooks, Terrell Wallen bulled his way for the final marker, making Gadsden 19, Butler 0. Gadsden also advanced to the 10, 5, 15 yard lines without scoring. The entire backfield of Smith, Benny Striplin, Adams, and Wallen, played creditably. GADSDEN 68 SANSOM 44 A grim Gadsden Quintet ran the Rebels of Emma Sansom into the floor. Gus Nordgren and Dog Morris paced the scores with 17 and 14 points re- spectively. Gadsden had nine players scoring in a fine team play. The reserves again played most of the second half. GADSDEN 53 ALEXANDRIA 68 The Valley Clubs of Alexandria ripped Gadsden during the third and fourth periods and nailed the Tigers 68-53. Pacing the Bengals were Nordgren, Pruet, and Hicks with 13, 12, and 11 points. Lack of defense and consistent rebounding by Sansom proved Gadsden's downfall. COUNTY TOURNAMENT GADSDEN 71 GLENCOE 56 Gadsden defeated Glencoe 71-56 to gain a berth in the finals of the County Tournament. Morris had 21 points; Nordgren, 14; Pruet and Cox, 13 each to pace the scorers for the winners. COUNTY TOURNAMENT GADSDEN 56 SANSOM 44 Gadsden won the County Tournament for the sec- ond straight year by downing Sansom 56-44. The towering Big Three garnered the majority of the Tiger points. Morris had 15; Nordgren, 14; and Pruet, 13. These three were selected on the All-Tournament Team which consisted of only six players. GADSDEN 72 CLANTON 70 The Tigers journeyed southward and downed a fighting, scrapping Clanton team 72-70. Harold Mor- ris and Billy Pruet led the winners with 23 and 19 points. Team hustle payed off in a close margin victory. GADSDEN 55 ROBERT E. LEE 65 The Gadsden Tigers faltered and fell before the Lee Generals 65-55. Although four players broke into double figures, Gadsden lacked the clinching punch. Dog Morris, 11; Gus Nordgren, 11; Ronald Cox, 11; and Billy Pruet, 10 showed the way for the Bengals. GADSDEN 85 ETOWAH 54 For the third time this year, the Gadsden Tigers downed the Blue Devils of Etowah. The 85 points registered was the second high for the season. The entire first five reached double digits as the team effort showed well for the winners. Morris, Cox, Pruet, Nordgren and Metcalf paced the Blue Devils with 17, 14, 12, 11, and 10 respectively. The reserves led by Beason, Camp- bell, Larry Rankin and Gerald Hicks played well, backing the first five. GADSDEN 56 SANSOM 43 Gadsden downed a hustling Emma Sansom five 56-43 in a warm up for the District Tournament. Guard Larry Metcalf led the winners with 15 points and played perhaps his best game. Nordgren followed with 11; Morris and Pruet had 9 points each. A second half surge and a great team effort pulled this one out for the Tigers. GADSDEN 70 ALEXANDRIA 45 The hustling Tigers hung a 70-45 loss on high-ranked Alex- andria to avenge an earlier season loss. The Gadsden team was never behind as the winners were paced by Gusty Nordgren, 20; Billy Pruet, 16; Ronald Cox, 13; and Gerald Hicks, 12. It was the 19th win of the season and a great team win. GADSDEN 72 FAYETTE 49 Gadsden avenged a defeat of last year's State Tour- nament. The Tigers fought all the way and won 72-49. Rebounding must receive much of the credit of the win. The Big Three, Nordgren, Pruet, and Mor- ris pulled down 75% from both boards. Nordgren finished high point man with 20 points, followed by Cox, 16; Morris, 15; and Pruet, 10. DISTRICT TOURNAMENT GADSDEN 58 OXFORD 42 Gadsden broke Oxford's deep freeze to advance to the quarterfinals of the Sixth District Tournament. Dog Morris and Gus Nordgren's 11 points each, and Ronald Cox and Gerald Hicks', 10 each, carried the brunt of the Tiger attack. Rebounding chores were ably carried out by Nordgren, Morris, and Pruet. GADSDEN 72 TALLADEGA 48 Gadsden raced past a staggering Talladega team to gain a semi-final berth. Pacing the Tiger team was Billy Pruet with 15 points followed by dog Morris with 12, and Gus Nordgren with 11. The Big Three also pulled down the majority of both offensive and defensive rebounds. GADSDEN ALEXANDRIA The Battling Bengals downed the top seeded Alexandria Valley Cubs to advance to the district finals and gained a state Tournament berth. Larry Metcalf showed the way as he came in to spark the team with 20 big points. Morris, 17; Nordgren, 16; and Pruet, 11 aided greatly. The defense of Cox was unequaled. GADSDEN 66 SANSOM 68 Gadsden bowed to E. Sansom 68-66 in the most exciting game of the tournament. Both teams battled down to the final buzzer. Billy Pruet paced the Tigers with 20 points followed by Dog Morris with 16 points. Sansom defeated Gadsden by a two-point majority after 3 other wins for the Bengals in the regular season. Dog Morris, the most valuable in the district was joined by Billy Pruet and Gus Nordgren on the All-Tournament team. GADSDEN 77 GERALDINE 65 A visiting Geraldine Bulldog team bowed 77-65 before the Towering Tigers. Gus Nordgren had 24 points to lead the scorers. Morris and Pruet followed with 18 each. Cox and Metcalf played a good floor game. STATE TOURNAMENT For the third time in four years Coach Fred New- come's Gadsden Tigers participated in the State tournament at Tuscaloosa. Against a fine Robert E. Lee team, the Bengals bowed in defeat 70-56. Billy Pruet paced the Tigers with 16 points followed closely by Harold Morris with 12 points. Rebounding was spotty with Morris, Nordgren, and Pruet gathering in the majority of them for the Tigers. HAROLD MORRIS District's Most Valuable Player GUSTY NORDGREN, DOG MORRIS, BILLY PRUET All-County and All-District COACH NEWCOME RONALD COX, DOG MORRIS, BILLY PRUET All-NEAC COACH JACK GREEN Active B Team Coach “B” TEAM 224 ETOWAH COUNTY CHAMPS I 4 WINS - 2 LOSSES Dick Nimon, Ralph Thrasher, Roger Hicks, Rennie Feazell, Webb Sledge, Buddy Love. 7959 TRACK TEAM The Tiger team under Coach Jack Curly Green again had a superb track season, winning the County, District, Sectional, and N.E.A.C. meets. In each meet they scored over 80 points. Wayne Cox and Henry Liverett set new jumping rec- ords, Cox, high jumping 6 feet 2Vi inches for a state record and Leverett, pole vaulting 11 feet Vi inch for a school record. A new school record was set by miler Morgan Looney with a time of 4:47. Coach Green has great expectations for the team which was composed primarily of sophomores and juniors. After losing a great many seniors in '58, this was the rebuilding year. HOME OFFICE Gadsden, Alabama 750 Forrest Avenue Serving and Growing With Seven Progressive Southeastern States B. L. CARTER President EARL W. LEBO First Vice President CLASS PROPHECY (conlinued from page 71) At the Super-Super Market, I encountered Jerry Fuller, Manager, and clerks James Gorfee, Larry Gilbreath, James Garbe, and Jimmy Heaton. Handing out sample moon pies were Peggy Sue Findley, Pat Ford, Audrey Amberson, and Jackie Cox. They were competing with the Sugar Jet Company which was also giving away free samples by Janice Foster, Yolanda Downey, and Loraine Garrett. Loyal Hill, the store clown, met me as I was leaving and gave me a free sample of Milky Ways. I stopped to buy a paper only to find our own Clark Griffith, Editor, with Judy Kay Day as Society Editor. Pat A. Long, copy girl, seems to have no connections. Linda Hill sold me a paper as I entered a large clothing store. Alvin Fox, the manager was frantically trying to find his favorite models, Joy Lindsey, Maryanne Long, Glenda Nesbitt, Charlotte Phillips, Kay Routon, and Rita Salvador for a special show. All the clothes were designed by Brenda Weathington for the Princess of Asteroid, Peggy Lane. Peggy captured the Universe's most eligible bachelor. Anita Nicholson and Milton Nelson are in charge of the clothing department for extra tall people. I was stopped by salesladies, Judith Jolly and Sandra Young, who gave me the secret, how to have natural blonde hair. As I came out of the store. Manager Fox had just been forced to buy another telephone pole. On the scene were Dr. Ronnie Parker, nurse Sally McIntosh, and ambulance drivers, Dot Smith and Margaret Stine. By this time I was so tired I decided to go to the show. Monster from Earth starring Harold McDonald, Sandra Glenn, and Bruce Oliver, was now playing. Show manager, Ben Couch, threw Jean Stinson and Jimmy Smith out for letting lightning bugs loose in the show. The Usherettes were Marcia Vernace, Pat Stoddard, Gail Cates, Freida Simmons and Elizabeth Sauls. Once again in my space ship, I blasted to the Interplanetary Hall of Fame, where my heart was touched to see the names of so many of the Class of '59. They were Becky Jackson, Ellen Johnson, Jimmy Kelley, Roland McDonald, Carolyn McGowan, Jimmy Moore, Wayne Patrick, Barbara Putnam, Joyce Robertson, Nell Sasser, Juanzetta Shew, Wayne White, Bobby Willingham, Elsie Wright, Patty Yates, Robert Wright, Pat Smiley, Rita Talley, and Linda Vice. With tears in my ears, and flys in my eyes, I turned my carpet homeward. It was midnight, but lights still blazed in G.H.S. I wasn't surprised because you see, Mary Lane Holland and Brenda Blackshear are still working on the class prophecy. That is all for now; I didn't have time to write, but I thought you would like to know that the Class of '59 has really made a name for itself. Write soon. Love, Snoo P. Blasdem P.S. The Earth is beginning to shake. I wonder if it is the Russians? ■ . w
