TABLE OF CONTENTS Administration Seniors Juniors Sophomores Freshmen Organizations Activities Athletics Features Advertisements FOREWORD As all things must make progress or cease to be important and useful, so must a school and its students. In making this progress they often make history and instigate tradition. We of the CRUCIBLE hope to show the progress and aspirations of the Gadsden High School Student Body and also the results of this school year. As did the horse and buggy lead to the present-day automobile, we hope to bring progress and move forward through the years. The CRUCIBLE staff presents the Forward Look featuring you, the future of America. To oneâ who has given his life in complete devotion to the education of his students, who has instructed them not only mentally but also morally and spiritually in the principles of fair play, whose service to mankind has always been clean, with- out spot and above reproachâ To a man who commands the respect and love of every- one with whom he comes in contactâ To you, Mr. Davis, we very proudly dedicate this 1956 CRUCIBLE. 1 J. ALABAMA TO THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 1956: You are to be congratulated upon the completion of your high school work. May your citizenship in the years to come reflect the good qualities that your families, the faculty, and citizens of this community have striven to help you attain. The following pages of this annual will tell the story of your success during these past four years. May these activities challenge you to pass on to future generations cooperation and teamwork in making this a better school. Members of this Crucible staff are commended for the organization and the publishing of this, another fine annual. Sincerely, F. T. Dobbs, Principal MR. F. T. DOBBS Principal On first arriving at Gadsden High as Freshmen, we thought little of what the future might hold. We soon realized, though, that we must begin thinking of the years to come and how we could prepare for them. Our thoughts were aimed toward graduation and the time we would be on our own. During this period of preparation, we were helped by our principal, Mr. F. T. Dobbs, who counseled and guided us with understand- ing and patience. He helped in- cite our ambition and desire to move forward with modern times and show a progression not to be surpassed. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Seniors now, we've come a long way trom the timid little freshmen. Some might call us dignified, but underneath we'll always carry with us the frolicking, friendly spirit prevalent at G.H.S. and particularly in the class of '56. As freshmen we surprised the other classes by placing second in the Talent Show; but our biggest thrill was when Wyatt Sieber crowned our beauty, Jerrie Gillespie, Queen of Gadsden High School. Our sophomore year started with a bang when we won first place with our Homecoming float, entitled Stump 'Em, Tigers. This was just the beginning. We won a red ribbon for our Talent Show, Saddy Nite in Hebben, and Jerre Gillespie was crowned Queen for the second time. Before we knew it, we were juniors and upperclassmen at last. We took first place in the Talent Show. Our stunt for that year won us second place. Tough as nails, hard as bricks, we're the class of '56. We proved our spunk and spirit in the magazine campaign. Under the leadership, of Jim Connor, our class president, we topped the school record by selling $1143. Homecoming came next, and we were all very proud of our lovely Queen, Jenny Davis. Our class beauty, Kay Watford, was crowned Queen by our own Jim Conner at the first annual Coronation Ball. Seniors, we are looking toward the future. We hope that as we take our places f in life, we can make G.H.S. proud of the Class of 1956. Here, here, now! he 'age Charlotte, âMouse, and the friendly bus driver. CLASS PROPHECY Boy, that class reunion last night was really something! It's great to see old school friends you haven't seen in twenty years. It seemed just like This Is Your Life to see everybody and find out how and where they all have been all these years. It's hard to believe that our gang have done so well. Our feature guest was George Rod Ford. He's President of the United States now, you know. He brought his recently appointed cabinet of Chief Justice Jim Pruett, Secretary of State Gary Nicholes, and Secretary of the Interior Kenneth Gilchrist with him. A lot of our folks are doing well up in New York now. Ann Burttram is singing at Bob McElroy's Club 49V2. She is accompanied by Ben Clark's orchestra, with Hall Powell and Jerry Ward on lead trumpets. Kay Harwell is feature dancer, and Pat Mullinax is a cigarette girl. Dinah Boman has replaced Marie Wilson as TV's My Friend Irma. Herbert Gay and Ann Downing are starring as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth at the Paramount Theatre. Sue Hawkins, Sonya Head, and Judy Tidwell are playing the Three Witches in the play. Nancy Davis is editor of Vogue Magazine. Rebecca Carr is fashion editor and Mary Jean Hyde is cartoonist. Mary and Martha Whitt are posing for ads as the Toni Twins. Two of our boys have done very well in the literary field. Darryl Holder re- cently shocked the scientific world with his New Atomic Theory. Richard Bring 'Em Back Alive Teague has just completed his new book, Home Life of the Coosa River Muskrat. Many of our people have made their fortunes in Hollywood. Charlie Allison has replaced Roy Rogers as King of the Cowboys. Bill Reed is the new Tarzan, and Leonard Flub Hartsook plays gorilla roles in all the Tarzan pictures. Terry Bryson's leopard skin blouse finally came in handy. She is playing Sheena of the Jungle. Johnny Newman is training his hair so that he can take over Gorgeous George's place. Tommy McGowan is prize fighting on the West Coast, still trying to get a ring for Adele Klein. Jerry Taliaferro is his manager. Bill Leach and Mack Long are professional golfers out there. Jim Connor, our class president, has a job with a big candy firm on the Coastâpunching holes in Life Savers. Speaking of sports, many of our athletes have already made their fortunes in the world of sports and retired. Among them are Jerry Albright, Richard Carter, Herman Collins, Bill Parker, Don Owens, and Wade Wellingham. We received the news the other day that Tommy Wilbanks had won the Decathlon event in the Olympics. As always, the majority of our class were content just to live in Gadsden and be like our parents, not trying for fame and fortune. Frank Martin and Wayne Mobley are prominent Gadsden Lawyers now and Jane Allen is the town's sole lady lawyer, and Shelby LaFollette is the only lady dentist. Linda Ferguson is a lady cop now, and she draws her pay check from police chief Warren Crowder. Warren told me he had been having trouble with John- Wiggins and Phil Hill, who have been sponsoring drag races. He took me through the new jail, where I saw Paul Alford and Leon Adams, who are doing a long- term stretch for breaking into the G.H.S. chemistry lab. Kitty Cooper and Carolyn Murphree are running the Lonely Hearts Club. Chief subscribers are Peggy Vaughan, Nancy Wall, Pat Sewell, and Jo Anne Stephens. Betty Pentecost quit her job at Doc Graham's and is peddling Goo-Goo Clusters, half price, at Lane's Drug Store, now owned by June Kidd. Joyce Chitwood is secretary of the First Baptist Church, with Anita Camp as her assistant. Robert Foshee, Lee Cranford, and Gene Watson are doctors, and nurses are Sherry Reeves, Joan Brock, Sherry Langford, Dot Rhodes, and Mary Dale Miller. One of Gadsden's fine restaurants is Vic and Annie's Piazza and Spaghetti House, run by Victor Giamalva and Ann Piazza. Tom Dawson is Chief Cook and Bottle Washer at Vic and Annie's. Naturally, most of our girls are now married. Some of the elites of the town are Ann Dellinger, Elaine Taylor, Helen Turner, Kay Watford, Charlotte Breeden, and Jenny Davis. They are, respectively, Mesdames Turner, MacDuffie, Isbell, Dowling, Kennedy, and Franklin. Craig Striplin recently became Mrs. Richard Byrd, and they are honeymooning at the South Pole. Don Alldredge has ended the search for Bridey Murphy. He found her working as a rack boy in the Stage Pool Room, along side Allen Heard and Jerry Salvador. Russell Mister Russ Nunnally and Glenn Smith are running the Stag. I saw Jenny Davis Franklin in the Stag the other night checking scores. Surely is hard to break family tradition. Right next door is the C L Newsstand, run by Robert Carruth and John Lytle. Sam Norris is now Supreme Commander of Allied Powers in Camp Sibert. His fighting force consists of Bob Powell, W. A. Stephens, Sidney Woods, Paul Lake- man, and Bobby Cline. Don Austin is a captain of the Canine Corps. There is also a Wac division at the base, under the direction of Sandra Klinner, Ferry Whitt, Ann Upton, and Jeanelle Twilley. In the clothing business. Bill Jones is manager of Belk-Hudson and Company. Elaine Thompson is head of the ladies' department, and Peggy Heath, Judy Hixon, Carolyn Smith, and Grace Stallings are sales clerks. Sonny Stallings is the elevator operator. Nancy Pritchett and Nancy Reichert are models at Jack Saks Fifth Avenue Store. Gadsden High School is full of our old grads, who are now serving as teachers. The coaching staff consists of Ed Scruggs, Jack Siniard, Herbert Ford, and John Boyles. Mary Faye Weeks has replaced Mrs. Green, Kay Pittman is teaching typing, and Kenneth Moon has taken over Mr. Davis's trig class. Jimmy Morris and Jack Morgan are still in trig, trying to laugh their way out. Our new principal is Eugene Botsford. Nobody knows what happened to the rest of our class in these long years, but we can rest assured that wherever they are, they are upholding the good name of the Class of '56. JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY Our freshman class was probably the greenest ever, yet we surprised the upper- classmen, with some real competition during the year. Our float, Panther Blues, won third place, and our talent show, The Night Before Christmas, was said to be one of the cleverest shows ever presented. Stunt Night took us to the ocean depths, and Jane Thornton was our beauty. Jerry Hofferbert was our class president. Our first ribbon came during our sophomore year when our Homecoming float, Tigers Spill Coffee, won second place. Hernando's Hideaway was the setting for our Talent Show. Our stunt, Down Mexico Way, was gay and colorful, our best yet. Martha Hudson was beauty, and John Akins showed his capability as class president. Juniors! and upperclassmen! We could hardly believe it! Again John Akins was president, and again we had a very successful year. Our Homecoming float was said by all to be the first place winner. Our talent show, Music Through the Years, was praised by student and faculty alike. Once more our beauty was Martha Hudson. We are looking forward to a fine year, and we believe we'll be the best senior class yet! JUNIOR SNAPS SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY We, the class of '58, entered Gadsden High a year ago, with the same ambitions and dreams that every class has. We all pitched in and produced a Homecoming float that did not place, but we enjoyed working on it. The next big thing was Talent Show; we came in with second place. Then last but not least was Stunt Night; everybody worked hard on it. But is just was not good enough to place. We were all really proud of our Beauty, Jean Gibson. This year we had to start all over again with new class officers and a new sponsor. We worked hard on the Homecoming float, with the hope of getting first place. Then Talent Show time came around. We really did work hard on it, and we came in with second place, which we were all proud of. This year we did not have Stunt Night. SOPHOMORE SNAPS FRESHMAN CLASS HISTORY As we, the class of '59 entered Gadsden High School last September, we were like most other freshmenâscared, wide-eyed, and amazed at the wonder and new- ness of being in high school. When the time for homecoming rolled around, we nearly worked our little green heads off to get our float ready for the parade. When it was finished, we all thought of our hallowed first float as a real work of art, and we are sure, had it been judged, we would have placed. Being as inexperienced as we were, we thought not so much of paying for float materials as of getting the float ready, and in the end we had run up quite a few bills. To get rid of our debt, we sold the traditional hand cream and sham- poo and made around $180 for our class. Though this year there haven't been quite so many privileges for us as for former classes, we have made the best of what we had, and we have three more wonderful years to go, in which we intend, and will try hard, to contribute something worth while to Gadsden High. The team seemed to have hard luck in many games. Even up against top opposition the boys often showed great playing ability. They were skillfully directed by a group of fine coaches. BILL ABSTON Backfield Coach JACK GREEN Line Coach FRED NEWCOME B Team Coach NICK ARDILLO Head Coach GADS DEIS Gadsden High placed four men on the All-County squad. They were Jack Sini- ard, Jerry Albright, Herb Ford, and Bill Parker. The Tigers started the season by de- feating Emma Sansom and Butler in their first two games. They lost the next six to Decatur, Huntsville, Bessemer, Etowah, Anniston, and Emma Sansom. They tied Talledega, and in their final game they defeated Hokes Bluff. JACK SINIARD JERRY ALBRIGHT Co-Captain Captain All County All County TIGERS Webb scores The Band's initial performance The 55 Tigers got off to a good start by downing their arch-rivals, Emma Sansom, 31-13. Sansom scored first on a 21-yard run by Harry Beaube. Jerry Albright returned the kickoff 60 yards to the 25-yard line. Jerry Duke then scored on a 20-yard scamper. Jerry Albright and Ronnie Stancile teamed up on a beautifully executed play for the next Tiger score. The score at the half was 12-7, in favor of Gadsden. The Tigers worked the ball down to the 2-yard line, where Billy Parker burst through the line for the score. Harry Beaube scored Sansom's last T.D. on a 2-yard run early in the third quarter. In the final quarter G.H.S recovered a fumble on the Sansom 30, and from there Jerry Duke ran it over. Webb scored the Tigers' last T.D. from 15 yards out. That was the final touchdown. G.H.S. looked very good. The defensive line is to be especially commended. In their second game Gadsden journeyed to Huntsville to play the Butler Rebels. The Tigers came through by defeating Butler 26-6. Gadsden's first touchdown came on a 12-yard run by Jerry Duke. Duke also scored the second touchdown on a 3-yard run. Gadsden led at the half 13-0. Jerry Albright tallied next for Gadsden on a 37-yard sprint. In the final quarter Gary Nichols and Tom Dawson teamed up on a 56-yard option play for the Tigers' final tally. Butler scored late in the game on a pass from Brewer to Cleveland. Gadsden's running attack looked very good in their 26-6 drubbing of Butler. GADSDEN - 26 BUTLER - 6 Another job well done Homeward bound Duke runs, Ford blocks Dawson and Boyles make the stop The Tigers finally met their match, the Decatur Red Raiders. The Tigers played a very good game, but they couldn't stop the Red Raiders' passes. Decatur's first touchdown was a pass from Hurst to Moses. Crane scored the second touchdown on a 2-yard smash. Our boys played a good game and did not give up until the final gun. BESSEMER - 20 GADSDEN - 0 Getting ready for the trip?? Grab it, Jerry! Kill him, boys! The Tigers were defeated in their fifth game against the Etowah Blue Devils. The Blue Devils scored in the first, third, and fourth quarters to defeat the Tigers 20-0. Talladega received the kick-off and immediately marched back for the score on a 30-yard pass. The Tiger line broke through and blocked the p. a. t.
