I V cSznioz CL AND CxuaiLLz JEANETTE SCHUDT. ....................... MARGUERITE PIAZZA I.......Co-Business Managers JERRY McNABB Jo’l£,VJOtcl Long ago the Greeks told the story of the Winged Horse, Pegasus,- how Pegasus was caught and tamed by Pallas Athena who gave him into the care of the Muses. When they told this story, the Greeks, linked the winged horse with learning. They said that learning brought wisdom and that with wisdom man rose on the wings of imagina- tion, as though lifted skyward by Pegasus, far above the world of ordinary things. Be- cause of this, because Pegasus was the special charge of the Muses, the inspiration of the Arts, the Greeks made the winged horse the swift steed of the poet, the symbol of song. The Crucible Staff presents this record of our school year to show that we too aspire to the heights and hope to rise on the wings of learning. c3fdminL±tzation zu i c jtfz zzrza 3uni untozs. (2ta±± cz)-fi±toxij As we, the Class of 55 , reluctantly prepare to leave Gadsden High School, we leave all our good times to the many classes who will follow us but take with us the fond memories of the four wonderful years we spent here. We entered this school with all the ambitions and dreams of every class. We got off to a good start by coming in with a red ribbon for our Freshman float, but we fell a little short on the Talent Show and Stunt Night that year. As Sophomores we were ready to go, and all worked together on our float for which we received another red ribbon. The most thrilling event of that year was the moment the judges awarded us second place in Stunt Night. Suddenly we were upperclassmen. As Juniors we learned that together we could go almost anywhere we wanted and again united forces to win another red ribbon on our float. We buckled down and came through with Blue Horizon which won second place, but we gave the winner a real chase for that blue ribbon. Sally Clark, our beauty for two years, was as beautiful as ever and although she was not queen of the school we chose her as our own little queen. Then came our big Senior year. We started this year off with the biggest bang of all. In our magazine campaign we topped the school's record and sold $9,400. We ranked second in the whole South. With this victory under our belt we were out to get those blue ribbons. Don Wilson, who had pulled us over many a rough spot in past years, was heading us as President of our class. The first ribbon we won was for the float. Along with that blue ribbon we had another winner — Homecoming Queen, Sally Clark. We fell a little short on the Talent Show, but we intend to make up for if on Stunt Night. Although at this time Shunt Night is a thing of the future, we have great plans and hope to add another blue ribbon to our collection. Sally will be our beauty again this year and we all hope that she will be crowned Queen Sally . Now as we prepare to leave these Hallowed Halls , we look into a bright future, but even that brightness cannot make these wonderful memories grow dim. We hope that we have contributed something to this school, which has known so many Senior classes, and hope you will always remember the CLASS OF 1955. Nick Ardillo, who spent his first season as head coach at Gadsden High, was well pleased with the record. Coming to Gadsden High from Ramsey, he had very few experienced players, but he came up with a fine team. The Tigers won their first game with Oxford but couldn't get a break on the next four tilts. NICK ARDILLO The 1954 season was Coach Ardillo's first at Gadsden High School, but he gives evi- dence of producing one of the top teams in the state. JACK GREEN Coach Green is the only coach to return from the pre- vious coaching staff. He is line coach and B Team Basketball coach. The Tigers running attack was led by Albright, Edwards, Duke, Cushen, and Ford who showed up in fine shape all season. The forward wall was headed by Siniard, Stephens, Woods, Hartsook, Dunn, Ford, and Conner, all doing their very best during the season. The quarterbacking for the Tigers was led by McNabb and Stoffregen; both boys did a fine job. In spite of the disappointing losses, the coaching Staff managed to keep the team in good spirit all year. BILL ABSTON This was coach Absfon's first year at Gadsden High. He is the backfield coach and Baseball coach. FRED NEWCOME Coach Newcome is another of the new coaches who made his debut at G.H.S. He is the B Team football coach and Varsity Basketball coach. GADSDEN 26 OXFORD 13 The 1954 Gadsden Tigers got off to a good start by downing u surprisingly strong Oxford eleven 26-13. Led by co-captain Bobby Edwards, Jerry Duke, and Jerry Albright, the Tigers led 14-13 at the half. Edwards went over for the first score and Duke returned a kickoff for the second Tiger T.D. The Tiger's line began to hold in the second half and Gadsden's offense began to click. Stoffregen, call- ing some great plays, led the Tigers to the 11 where Edwards went the final distance. Again in the final period the Tigers started a 68 yard drive with Edwards going over for the final 6 points. Every tiger played his heart out for Coach Nick Ardillo who was making his Gadsden High School debut. Butler took the opening kickoff and drove 72 yards for the score. The extra point was no good and Butler led 6-0. The Tigers threatened in the second quarter but a fumble at the 20 stopped the drive. The half ended with Butler leading 6-0. Late in the third quarter the Tigers began to roll. Led by Edwards, Albright, Duke, Stoffregen, and McNabb, they drove to the 5. Stoff- regen tossed a spot pass to Dunn for the Tigers only tally. The extra point failed. Butler scored again in the third quarter and the extra point was good. Late in the fourth quarter Butler made the final touch- down; the extra point was good and the final score was 20-6. The Tigers led in statistics with 15 first downs to 10 for Butler, and 185 yards rushing to 130 for Butler. It was the passing of Nunnally that accounted for two touchdowns and a victory for Butler. Band ' ermi“i0n To chd own I i GADSDEN 13 DECATUR 14 In a game marred by penalties, the Gadsden Tigers bowed to the Decatur Red Raiders 14-13. A sucker shift used by the Raiders pulled the Tigers off sides five times and every time it played a major role in the Decatur march down field. Early in the second period, a 42 yard pass by Decatur put the ball on the 11. Two plays later the ball was on the one yard line,- Holland cracked over, the conversion was good, and the score was 7-0. With about 50 seconds remaining in the first half, a pass from Stoff- regen to Duke brought a roar from the Tiger rooters for it meant a 50 yard touchdown. Edwards' kick was wide and the half ended 7-6. In the third quarter Ralph Dunn intercepted a pass and returned it for the touchdown. Edwards' kick this time was good and the Tigers led 13-7. With two minutes remain- ing, Decatur returned a punt to the Tigers 28. They covered the last 24 of the 28 yards on penalties. With the score tied at 13-13, Crane calmly booted the ball between the uprights to give the Red Raiders a thrilling victory, 14-13. The Tigers pushed Bessemer all over the field the first quarter. In the second quarter the Bessemer fullback went off left tackle and was never touched as he ran 96 yards for a touchdown. In the last three minutes of the second quarter Bessemer scored two more touchdowns and led the Tigers 20-0 at half time. The third quarter was played about even with Bessemer still leading 20-0. Bobby Edwards got off a beautiful kick and Tommy Lornio received for Bessemer and went 72 yards for their final touchdown. Later in the fourth quarter the Tigers drove 58 yards where Jerry Albright crashed over from the one. Edwards kick was good; the final score was 27-7. Etowah took to the air in the opening minutes of the game to grab a quick 13-0 lead. The rest of the half was a defensive battle with the Blue Devils leading 13-0. As the two teams took to the field for the second half it was the same old story with neither team giving any ground. Early in the fourth quarter Vandali Wardrup picked up a Gadsden fumble and journeyed 37 yards for the score. The Tigers took to the air to make a final attempt late in the fourth quarter. The pass was intercepted as the whistle sounded. CjADSDEN 19 HUNTSVILLE 6 The Gadsden Tigers, after dropping four straight games, came back strong to trounce a fighting Huntsville eleven by the score of 19-6. On the third play of the game Jerry Duke went off right tackle 56 yards for a touchdown. Five minutes later Jerry McNabb passed 27 yards to Duke for another tally. Edwards kicked the point and the score was 13-0. With three minutes left in the second quarter, Stoff- regen passed to Ralph Dunn who was downed on the one yard line. Stoffregen crashed over,- the con- version failed; and the score was Gadsden 19, Huntsville 0. Both teams appeared evenly matched until the last quarter when a Huntsville pass was batted into one of the Panthers hands which was good for a touchdown. Sparked by a 39 yard blast off tackle by fullback Bobby Edwards, the Tigers marched 60 yards to score the first time they had possession of the ball. Duke went over from the one and Edwards kicked the point. A re- covered fumble helped Coffee to score its first touchdown. Walker scored from the three yard line, but McDonald's kick was wide and the Tigers led 7-6. After-holding the Coffee eleven on downs at the three yard line, Edwards punted 42 yards which Almon returned to the Tiger 37. McDonald passed to Walker, the ball grazed his fingertips and hit a Gadsden defender before it was grabbed off the grass tops by Weatherly on the nine who went the rest of the way for a touchdown. The kick was wide and Coffee led 12-7. The Tigers fought back with Stoffregen passing to Dunn for 16 yards and then Edwards went the final 40 yards for the winning tally. This play featured beautiful down field blocking with Jerry Albright taking out the final man between Edwards and the goal. The kick was good and the final score was 14-12 in favor of Gadsden. The Tigers weren't too progressive, getting only three first downs the entire ball game, and those coming in the last quarter. Anniston, having one of the most powerful teams in the state however, had one of their best nights. The Bulldogs led 14-0 at half-time, but really turned it on in the final half to drub the Tigers to their worst defeat of the year. Led by All-State candidate, Gary O'Steen, and end, Herb Brannon, the Bulldogs went on the ground and in the air. This left the Tigers wtih a season record of 3 wins and 5 defeats, with only the Sansom game remaining. Loretta Painter sponsoring for J. C. The Tigers kicked to Sansom and the Rebels drove to the Tiger 45 where Beabue of the Rebels went off tackle and out ran the Tigers de- fenders for the first touchdown to give the Rebels a 6-0 lead; the point after the T.D. was good and the score was 7-0. With about two minutes to play in the first quarter, Blackburn went 65 yards for the Rebels' second tally, again the kick was good and the score was 14-0. Middle way in the second quarter the Rebels started another drive and again Beabue went off tackle and raced 43 yards for the third touchdown. Blackburn's kick was good and the score was 21-0 at the half. In the third quarter the Rebels scored again when Manderson cracked over from the two yard line to give the Rebels a commanding lead of 27-0. Never before had a Sansom team beaten or led the Tigers by the margin the Rebels had. The Tigers began to roll in the last quarter but it was too late. They hit their peak in the County tournament, when they beat the Emma Sansom Rebels for the Etowah County Cham- pionship.
