MARY ELLEN KING The Senior Class of Gadsden High School proudly dedicates the 1954 Crucible to Mary Ellen King. By doing this we hope to show our appre- ciation for the many things she has done for us and for Gadsden High as a whole. Miss King came to Gadsden High School in 1950. She sponsored the annual staff that year and continued to sponsor it for three more years. During these four years she supervised coronation. She sponsored the Senior Class last year as well as this year and led both classes to victory during Stunt Night. She did all these things during her leisure time. She did not have to do them. She did them because she enjoyed being with each and every student. This year has been her last at Gadsden High School. So it is that our farewell gift is to dedicate our edition of the Crucible to you. Miss King. What'cha so excited about, Betty? n,ors al r ' h fi One, two, three kick! Two points for G.H.S. In the fall of 1950 we entered the portals of Gadsden High School. We were classified as Freshmen. That year the class began its collection of ribbons and astounded the other classes by winning second place in the talent show contest which is very unusual for Freshmen. As stunt night rolled around our stunt about Holland began to shape up and it brought us our second red ribbon as we tied the Sophomores for second place. Ann Gillespie our beauty and candidate for queen was very beautiful and we were very proud of her. September '51 and we were Sophomores. With our talent show of Present and Future we won our first blue ribbon but there were many more to come. By winning this we broke a three year winning streak of the class of '52. Our stunt, The Enchanted Forest, though it didn't place was well received by all. Our beauty was the very lovely, Betty Dickson. 1952 and we were at last upperclassmen. Our Homecoming float won another blue ribbon to add to pur collection and another was close to follow, with our talent show about an Army Canteen. Stunt Night and again Betty was our beauty and a very beautiful one. Our stunt was on Broadway and our Sal and Her Gals was acclaimed the best that had ever been at G.H.S. and was said by many to be professional. Seniors at last. We wore our rings through the summer with great pride, feeling our senior year had come three months sooner. The magazine campaign came before we knew it and although we didn't meet our goal we still felt that we had done a good job. October 16th was Homecoming and although our float didn't bring us a ribbon this time our very stunningly, beautiful Homecoming Queen Betty Dickson made up for it for no one could think about a float when Betty came through the hoop on the field at half time. Our talent show, Blue Room, won us our third blue ribbon for talent show with Judy Brown one of the biggest attractions. Our Senior stunt was Spirit of Greece and at last we won a blue ribbon for Stunt Night. Betty was a beauty again and although she didn't get queen she will always be OUR queen. We knew the end of our high school career was near when Miss King told us is was time to start work on our Senior Banquet and that practice would soon begin for graduation. We sincerely hope that for all dear 'ole G.H.S. has given us, we have given to it a little in return . . . that we have done a small bit of good by being . . . THE CLASS OF 1954. M. K. Roper and Tommy Day are making the circuit with Billy May's band. Johnny Wetzel and Jerry are the co-managers of the Stag. I was very interested to hear that an old teacher of mine, Mr. Pentecost, is trying to get Big Jim Folsom's place at the governor's mansion. By the way, James Grannum and Sam Russell are his campaign managers. Marion Tolson is another Harpo Marx and he is really making a big hit in Hollywood. He ought to feel at home with so many G.H.S. graduates around the place. I hear Judy Brown is really making a haul with her wonderful talent and personality. William Vessels and Jo Ann Moore are singing duets on Broadway these days and Carolyn Smith is their accompanist. The grapevine tells me that Don Sansom is playing professional basketball while Duck Wild- man, Gary Snyder, and Jimmy H. Striplin, are playing professional football. I also heard that Ham Adams was coaching Bama and that Wayne Bynum is the head water boy for the Auburn Tigers. Speaking of Auburn, I was very pleased to hear that quite a few out of the class of '54 are teaching down there. Bobby McElroy is the head chemistry professor and Carol Clark is his private secretary. I always said that was a lot more serious than it looked! Frank McGee is the F.T.A. sponsor and from, all reports, he is working them to death. Funny, I never could picture Frank as a slave driver. Reigh Williams is giving Einstein private les- sons these days. It's a good thing, too, the world needs more people like him. I imagine everyone knows that Billy Jones and Wallace McDuffie have taken over Homer and Jethros place completely. Pee Wee Koehler is now a prominent member of the Ringling Bros, circus. Billy Ray Lockridge and Clarence Walker have really taken their work to heart. They're still Mr. Godwin's lab assistants—but they don't feel too bad about it because Billy Ray Russell is still go- ing to class and the three of them have great fun talking over old times. i hear that Sylvia and Sonny Hatley have taken over the management of their dad's cleaners. I know they are making a great success out of the business too. Harry Nelms is making peanut brittle. (I al- ways thought he was a little nuts.) Billy Rampey, Jimmy M. Striplin, Haden Staggs, and Richard Street, are all happily married. The talk around town is that Sylvia and Bill Stewart have got a good start in raising a foot- ball team. As far as I was able to find out, Margaret Fancher is still working for Mr. Nelson. Poor thing, she always was sick, but I never thought she was that far gone! Betty Dickson and Weigie Burroughs are co- owners of a dancing studio in Birmingham. Snookie Burgess, Sharon Cecelia, and Prissy Lake- man, have finally settled down and are raising cheerleaders. Mary Cross is living in Jacksonville, Florida for old times sake. I heard Jerry Sisson preach last Sunday. He certainly was wonderful. Hasn't Chuck Conyers got a beautiful church? These two certainly make me feel good deep down inside when I think about the class of '54. I saw Rita Cusimano's used car lot yesterday. Too bad about what happened to John Miles wasn't it? Oh, well—these things do happen. But Rita did you HAVE to set up a bigger place right across the street? Speaking of cars, did you know that Jo Ann Burke has become a first-class me- chanic? There wasn't much that girl wouldn' try. I noticed the other night that Faye DeLap is skating in the Roller Derby these days. Best of luck Faye. Lou Moore hasn't changed much has she? She's a professional wrestler these days. Margaret Dickson, Barbara Owen, Jo Ann Meeks, Evelyn Lister, and Carolyn Helderman, are all army wives. They don't seem to mind it too LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the members of the Senior Class of 1954 at Gadsden High School of the City of Gadsden, County of Etowah and State of Alabama, being of sound mind and memory, do hereby make, publish and declare this to be our last will and testament, hereby revoking any will or wills made by us heretofore. When float time came, everyone helped, and after our work was completed, out came a red ribbon. We still lacked something when the talent show and stunt night rolled around, but we were looking forward to proving more when we were Sophomores. We did. We again placed second in floats. Our proudest moment in Stunt Night was when Mr. Dobbs announced, second place goes to the Sophomores. Now we were really ready to go. We saw different changes take place in the school and if we didn't like them we expressed our opinions. Again we got a red ribbon for our float, but we didn't work quite hard enough on our talent show to place. Along came Stunt Night and the class became as one person—working harder and harder until our class was presented with another red ribbon. We received praises for our originality, precision, continuity, and performance. Although we have five red ribbons to our credit we hope to change the color next year. One thing you can be sure of, we are going to be the best Senior Class Gadsden High School ever saw. She's got him where she wants him! Such ambitious people! I know you can skate! Our year started off with a bang when we won first place with our Homecom- ing float entitled Stump 'Em Tigers. The next big event of the year was the Talent Show. Our show, Saddy Nite in Hebben won second place. We are very proud of our queen Jerre Gillespie. This was her second year to have this honor. We hope she makes even a better record. Our Stunt Pass That Peace Pipe was very successful even though we did not place. The year came to a perfect climax when we won the cup for The Outstanding Class of the Year. We are proud of this and hope to do even better in the future. We feel that we have done quite well this year, although we didn't collect all the ribbons. The class was very proud of our Homecoming float called Panther Blues. Although we didn't place in the judging everyone enjoyed marking on it. During our Talent Show, based on The Night Before Christmas, we found a great deal of hidden talent. Our stunt, entitled Atlantis was said to have been one of the best Freshman stunts in many years. Although we didn't win a ribbon, everyone says we are a class to watch in the coming years. We are especially proud of our sportsmanship this year and hope to attain the honor of having the best record. The Tigers started with a bang by shellacking West Fulton 37-6 then dropped the next four to some of the state's top teams. The most impressive game was against the closest rival, Etowah. Although the Blue Devils were on the long end of a 7-0 score, the Tigers were outstanding. After four losses, Gadsden got back in the win column by winning homecoming game over Huntsville 6-0. The following week the Tigers hit their peak by defeating Coffee of Florence 25-0. The last two came as defeats from Anniston and Sansom. EARNEST TEEL Head coach of the athletics de- partment. Has just completed his sixth year at Gadsden High School. He has done a swell job. JACK GREEN Line coach. Came in the same year as Teel and put out some magnificent lines. For the forward wall of the Tigers it was Synder, Wildman, Striplin, Griffin, Cormany, and Stephens doing a fine job all season. To back them up were Siniard, Bryan, Cox and Hatley. In the backfield. Waters, Wetzel, Edwards, Abel, Adams, Stewart, Clark, Stoffregen and Ford filled in. The 1953 season was the first in many seasons to have played all top teams of the state and go straight through the season without an open date. The loss of three games was mainly a fault to bad breaks. The coaches should be compli- mented for keeping their boys going all season with pep and fire while suffering a bad season. PLAYERS Jimmy Hart Wallace McDuffie Bobby McElroy Gary Smith Bill Stewart J. C. Stoffregen Haden Staggs Jimmy Striplin Jack Siniard Gary Synder Donald Stevens Jimmy Waters Don Woods Donald Wildman Bill Waters Johnny Wetzel ROAR MANAGERS—The keepers of the team are James Robertson, Donald Vice, Chat Chatham, Gene Kelly and Pud Hatley. CAPTAINS—Duck Wildman and Jimmy Striplin, the leaders of the Tigers, were outstanding. Both were All-County. The 1953 Tigers got off to a good start with their initial game against the West Fulton Owls by defeating them 37-6. It was the Tigers all the way with superb down field blocking and a sparkling offense. The team was green and in- experienced but proved to be a hustling team with win in their eyes. The standout play of the game was the 80-yard dash by left halfback, Johnny Wetzel. A quarterback sneak in the second quarter by J. C. Stoffregen accounted for the next score. At the half it was 13-0 in favor of the Tigers. After the half the Tigers engineered another touchdown in the opening moments, the ball being carried over by Kenneth Abels. Duck Wildman set up the next tally by blocking a punt on the 26 yard line. Billy Stewart accounted for this one. It was then Fulton's time to score. After the kickoff, Wetzel, Stewart, Jones and Adams moved the ball to the 5 yard line where Stewart dashed across the goal line for his second of the evening. In the last few moments of the game Joe Ford went over for Gadsden's final touchdown. This ended the Tigers' first 1953 game. HOMECOMING SPONSOR SNOOKIE BURGESS for DUCK WILDMAN The Tigers took to the road for their second game of the season only to meet defeat. At the tossup, Butler won and chose to receive. They drove deep into our territory but fumbled. Gadsden carried the. ball back up past the half mark. Bobby Edwards was carrying the mail most of the way. Then hopes faded away as the Tigers fumbled. On this trip the Rebels went all the way. At the half it was 14-0 in favor of Butler. The Tigers made one more threat in the second half with the ball being carried to the 4 yard line. Due credit was lost when a fourth down pass to Jimmy Striplin was incomplete. The game ended with the Tigers on the short end, 26-0. The Tigers suffered their second loss of the season against the Decatur Red Raiders. It was a night of nightmares for the Tigers of Gadsden, for mistakes were the price paid for the loss. The Tigers started out with precision but ran up against fate. Fumbles were not an odd sight. When you turn over to defense, the Tigers couldn't be beat. The Tigers were driven against their own goal line three times but such stalwarts as Duck Wildman, Gary Snyder, Harold Bryan, and Jimmy Striplin showed their worthiness. The lone score of the game came in the third quarter when Freeman threw a screen pass to Doss of Decatur. The Tigers fought back hard but couldn't make it. GLENDA ALLEN sponsoring for BOBBY EDWARDS SUE HAIMES sponsoring for CECIL TANNER f i ! i % - V ' % • } Y'f' ffl It? 11 The Tigers offered their third loss of the season to the Bessemer Purple Tigers. The highly-rated Purple Tigers were everything they were said to be. On offense Gadsden has no one to blame but themselves. Although the fumbling was frequent, the Tigers' attack was spear-headed by Jimmy Waters and Bobby Ed- wards. After 24 minutes of play the Tigers of Bessemer were ahead 26-0. After the half, Gadsden looked like a new team. Edwards held the honor of making Gadsden's only touchdown. After this Loreno caught a pass from Golden and raced 65 yards for another TD. Bessemer tallied once more before closing out, making it 40-6. Gadsden suffered its hardest defeat of the season to Etowah. It was a nip and tuck game all the way. The only score of the game came when Gadsden got a 15 yard penalty on their 14 yard line. With the ball on the one-half yard line it took Etowah two plays to plunge over. The extra point was kicked and Etowah went ahead 7-0. The Tigers made a threat late in the second quarter when they moved to Etowah's 17 yard line, but fumbled. For the Tigers such stalwarts as Captain Duck Wildman, Striplin and Snyder kept the Blue Devils from looking too impressive. Beautiful punt returns by Waters and Wetzel kept the Devils on their toes. MARY FAYE WEEKS sponsoring for GARY SNYDER ALICE LANGLEY sponsoring for BOBBY EDWARDS ELAINE TAYLOR sponsoring for Wallace McDuffie JUANZETTA SPURGEON sponsoring for CECIL TANNER Gadsden Tigers surged from a four-game losing streak to defeat the Huntsville Panthers 6-0. It was the Tigers' second win of the year. This game was home- coming, and everybody was happy. The Tigers' offense finally found itself per- forming beautifully. It was Wetzel, Stewart, Edwards, and Stoffregen on offense with Joe Ford Jr. halfback, helping. The Tigers' defense played its usual game of fine ball. Billy Stewart plunged over for the only tally of the game. In spite of the close score, the game was the Tigers' from the beginning. The Tigers hit the win column for two weeks straight. They journeyed to Florence, Alabama, to meet Billy Cadenhead's eleven. It was their homecoming, and Gadsden spilled Coffee all over it. The Tigers' offense clicked and drove for a 6-0 lead. Coffee got the ball, but against the hard-hitting defense of Gads- den, they fumbled. With Edwards scoring the first points, Wetzel wrapped up the next. Late in the second period Wetzel caught a beautiful pass from Stoffregen for his second TD. At the half it was 19-0, Gadsden. The second half Gadsden came back just as strong. In the third period, Wetzel didn't know when to quit and scored again. Due to a reinjured knee, Joe Ford filled in for Billy Stewart. In the line it was by far Gadsden's best game. The Tigers traveled to the Model City only to meet a night of trouble and woes. Gadsden won the toss and chose to receive. After losing the ball to the Bulldogs, following the kickoff, they marched to the 20 yard line, then tossed over Adam's head in the end zone for a TD. It was then Gadsden's time to kickoff. Immediately following it, Anniston fumbled, and Wetzel of the Tigers scored. McDuffie con- verted for the extra point. The Bulldogs scored once in every quarter for the rest of the game. Bobby Edwards of Gadsden kept the Bulldogs from scoring any more by putting on a magnificent show of punting. He punted the ball out of bounds twice within the 10 yard line. Wildman and Snyder also kept the ball out of the middle of the line. November 6th, 1953, the Gadsden Tigers met its toughest loss. In the eyes of the players, fans, and students, it wasn't a legal loss. One bad break caused the Tigers to go down in defeat. Gadsden High, that night, played the brand of ball game it was capable of playing. For the Tigers, it was Wetzel running, Wildman and Snyder blocking, Albright tackling, and Edwards punting. Late in the fourth period, Stoffregen pitched one to Wetzel in the end zone for the lone TD. Sansom punted to Gadsden, and the ball rolled to the one yard line, where the officials claimed the ball touched Jimmy Waters. SPONSORS SNOOKIE WEAVER for HAM ADAMS M.
