This year on the sixteenth of January, the boys in the National Guard were called to active duty. Shortly after this, many others felt it their duty to go to the service of their country. We would like to honor the following boys who made such a wise decision: Bobby Barnes Gerald Beauford Gordon Bishop John Allen Bishop Jack Culver Larry Day Howard Garrison Don Grigsby Wayne Heaton Bill Hulsey Leonard Jones David Lynch Robert Mayne Billy McGehee Richard Nordman Kenneth Page Dudley Parsons Jerry Payne Theron Russell Don Smith Charlie Wildman Pago 10 DEDICAT ION The Senior Class of '51 proudly dedicates its edition of the CRUCIBLE to Mi. F. T. Dobbs, who has meant so much to us during our stay at G. H. S. We feel that, as principal, Mr. Dobbs has bettered Gadsden High in every way since he came here in the fall of 1947. Although new in his job, Mr. Dobbs led G. H. S. to better sportsmanship, more interest in extra-curricular activities, and more appreciation of higher learning. We have always felt that Mr. Dobbs was one of us, and that in the future, we may turn to him for any help which we may need. To you, Mr. Dobbs, we give our sincere thanks and gratitude for all you have done for us during our high school career. OUR SUPERINTENDENT Gadsden was established as a separate school district in 1889. Today it has one of the most efficient educational systems in the South. Mr. C. A. Donehoo took up the work of Gadsden's Superintendent of Education in 1922. Two years later, he began the highly favorable budget system in the high school in place of the former tuition method. By this and other means, Supt. Donehoo has greatly increased the efficiency of the city schools. As Mr. Donehoo closes his career as Supt. of city schools this year, we realize that he has worked unceasingly for the betterment of our schools while superintendent. No praise is high enough to thank Mr. Donehoo for his outstanding service to our city. Pago 12 H. I. JAMES MERTIE MAE MOORE J. 0. SAMUELS ADMINISTRATION W. 0. McNAIR GEORGE W. FLOYD FRANK J. Treasurer JACK CULVER SARA LAWRENCE SONJA ANDERSEN LELLA SUE ABLES CLASS OF Now that the time for leaving Gadsden High has come, we, the class of '51, find that there ore many fond memories of things we have done in the past to take with us. As we remember the fun we had on band trips, during Stunt Night, at dances at the Rec, and while working on Homecoming floats, and realize that we can no longer take part in these and other activities as students of G. H. S., we find that there is a feeling of sadness. When we entered G. H. S. in the fall of 1947, we realized that, as green Freshmen, we had much to learn. We soon learned the ropes though, and won second place in the Homecoming Parade that year. It was with pride and pleasure that we presented our first stunt, Eboney's Rhapsody. Although if wasn't a winner, everyone felt that it was one of the best Freshman stunts ever to be presented at Gadsden High. Our beauty that year was Miss Joan Sherman. Everybody agreed that she made a charming picture on the stage during the Coronation. During our Sophomore year at G. H. S., we really came into our own. Many of the clubs in school had Sophomores os members and officers. Several of our boys were on the football team, and we were entering into all phases of school life. As time for Stunt Night rolled around, we worked feverishly on our Irish stunt, Blarney About Kilarney. Then the big night came. When King Mickey Brown picked our beauty, Joan Sherman, as his queen, we were really in the clouds. Then the decision of the judges revealed that our stunt had won second place. We really took the roof off. Before we realized it, we had become upper classmen. Our Junior year started off with a bang as we won second place in the Homecoming Parade. Our stunt this year was Cave Inn, a novel idea using the cave hide-out of Red Beard, the pirate, as our locale. Our joy knew no bounds when our beauty. Miss Sara Long, was crowned queen of G. H. S. This made our class the first in the history of the school to have two different girls crowned queen in consecutive years. Suddenly, we found that we were privileged Seniors. As we marched to our seats in the auditorium with the other classes standing for us, we could hardly realize that the years had passed so fast. It seemed that it had only been a few months ago that we had entered G. H. S. as green Freshmen. We had always heard about the magazine campaign, and been anxious to see how many we could sell. As we started our campaign, we set as our goal $6,000 worth of subscriptions. Although we didn't reach it, we still surpassed any effort by a previous Senior Class, and we had the highest sales of any school in Alabama. Before we knew it, it was Homecoming time. Again we won second place. As time for Stunt Night grew near, we felt that we must win in this, our last, year. We worked day and night for weeks on our Egyptian stunt, Nile and Void. For the first time in the history of stunt night, there was a tie for first place. The judges decided that all of the stunts were so good that both the Seniors and the Juniors deserved the blue ribbon. Then came the Senior banquet and the Senior dance, both of which were wonderful. But at graduation as we remembered the good times we had had in the past, we felt sad about leaving Gadsden High, the best alma mater in the world! Page 46 THE Wheels BUNNY LAND H£ S NOT A SENIOR CONGRATULATIONS, MUCHACHOS PtemeuLi COMING ATTRACTIONS As I hurried through the oirport on my way to the airplane which would take me to Los Angeles, I took time to admire the beautiful and useful building which my former classmate, Dick Worley, had designed. Dick is now a very famous architect. I finally found my airplane, and made my way up the ramp. You can imagine my surprise when I recognized the stewardess. It was Bobbie Coker! We exchanged greetings, and she promised me that she would come and talk to me later. I got settled in my seat and started to read the magazine which I had bought. It was The Saturday Evening Post, and my favorite, especially since Sara Lawrence had become editor. As I flipped through the pages, I found an article by Buford Harris. If was about Governmental Agencies and contained several references to Senator Bill Smith. Further on in the magazine, I found o story by Kenn Brengleman. Later, I saw the photography credits, naming Bobby Scarboro as a major contributor. Just then, Bobbie came up and started talking to me. She wanted to know if I knew what was happening in Gadsden. I told her that Delmar Farmer is manager of A P now, and his assistant is Tommy Cook. Gene Brannock has taken over his father's job os manager of McCellan's. I had visited him recently and found that his secretary is Janet Williams. Bill Corbett owns a drug store. He and his wife, Carol Demy, are very active in civic affairs. Jimmy Madderra is a barber. Martha Reeves and Barbara Ann Means own a florist shop together. They are both happily married. Gadsden has a new mayor now. In the recent election, Neil Adams had been elected by a large majority. His campaign monager had been Frank Kellett. Frank has been appointed Recreational Director by the new mayor. Margie Woodhall owns a small dress shop in Gadsden, and Martha Morrow owns a beauty shop. Severol of the graduates of '51 hove returned to G. H. S. Charlie Wildman is football coach there now. Nancy Buffington is head of the English Department. Betty McCluney is director of the Choral and Glee Clubs. Elizabeth Cranford teaches American history, Janet Lorren teaches Civics, and Joyce McCluney teaches Freshman English. The typing instructors are Mary Ann Woods and LaMerle Robershaw. Charles Johnson is band director, and Sue Carroll is girls' physical education teacher. That is about all of our class who are still at Gadsden High, but there are plenty who still live in Gadsden. Bob Tinsley owns the Princess Theater, and Roy Inman and Ralph Sewell work for him. Elsie Roberts and Elaine McGrow run a business college together. Their secretary is Edna Newton. Bobby Shepherd is quite a busy lawyer these days. Joyce Cambell, Adilene McCullors, and Bettye Jean Miller are nurses at the Baptist Memorial Hospital. Virginia Baker is buyer for Duncan's. Several of the girls of our class are housewives and live in Gadsden; Carolyn Watford, Sarah Lou Brooks, Betty Forrester, Gloria Ward, Katerine Fordham, Amelia Farrington, and Gloria Patterson. Tom Mick works in the research department at Goodyear. Rachie Holland is manager of Western Union now. Russell Vaughn has a flourishing practice as a doctor. Sidney Wynn is a veterinarian, and W. C. Mize is a dentist. I told Bobbie that many of our class had gone to Birmingham to live. Penny King is married to the mayor there. Bobby Williams is manager of a radio station. The Alabama Theater is now operated by Bobby Erwin. Nelrose Rigdon is married to the director of the Theater in the Round. Marlene Cofield owns a huge beauty shop. Some of her many operators are Sylvia Moon, Frances Smith, Clara Jolly, Louise Fowler, and Ellowene Conner. Joyce Swann and Gail Norton are teaching at Howard College. Willie Fern Nosh is married to the president of Howard. Speaking of President's wives reminded me that Vivian Borders is married to the president of J. S. T. C. Bobbie interrupted me to then say that she had just received a letter from Hula Jo Morris. Hula Jo is Educational Director at the First Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas. She told me that Gayle Harris and Neeka Norris are stewardesses for this airplane company, and Rodney Copeland, Bobby Barnes, and Van Lee Blackwell are pilots for the company. One of the passengers come up to folk to Bobbie then. When we looked up, we found to our surprise that it was Charles Edwards. After the greetings were over, he told us that he is the leader of a band in Chicago. He said that Bill Moon and Tick Charlton play in the band. We asked him if he were married, and he said that he and Leila Sue Abies had been married for several years. Our first honor came during our Sophomore year when we won first place in the Homecoming Parade. Again that year we took the blue ribbon for our talent show. Last, but not least, we won Stunt Night, the highest honor any class can ever achieve. We have continued with our winning ways in our Junior year with the winning of the blue ribbon for our Homecoming float and for the talent show. Then we shared the blue ribbon with the Seniors for our stunt, A Spree in Paree. This is not the end, however, for we look forward to being one of the greatest Senior classes ever at G. H. S. The football and basketball teams have relied upon some of our boys for their star players. GADSDEN 14 - LITTLE ROCK 46 The Tigers, traveling to Little Rock, met another tough foe. Gadsden went scoreless in the first half, but came back strong in the second half to score two quick TDs. The second came when Davidson hit Albright with another TD pass. Culver converted both times. GADSDEN 20 BESSEMER 13 The Gadsden Tigers, after two straight defeats, went to Bessemer with the will to win. The Tigers went into the game as the underdog, but proved that wrong when Watford covered a Gadsden fumble in the end zone to score. Bessemer scored and tied the game but Gadsden took the lead when they scored twice in the second quarter. Bessemer scored again in the third quarter but it was not enough as Gadsden went on to win 20-13. After the half, Gadsden took the kickoff and marched downfield to another TD. The extra point was blocked. The Tigers scored two more in the last quarter. GADSDEN 19 - DECATUR 0 The Gadsden Tigers lost no time in scoring as Davidson took the opening kick-off and raced 65 yards to Decatur's five-yard line, from where Conner bulled his way over for the first score. Watford scored again in the last quarter when he cut over left tackle to make the score Gadsden 19-Decatur 0. aL CHARITY BOWL GADSDEN 0 -ETOWAH 13 The Godsden High Tigers hod some unusually hard luck in the annual Charity Bowl game on Thanksgiving Day as they lost to Etowah 13-0. Gadsden fumbled six times with Etowah recovering all of them. Etowah scored their first touchdown in the second quarter. Just before the half. Piggy Watford brought the fans to their feet when he intercepted an Etowah pass and ran it back 73 yards, but failed to score. Don Conner carried the offensive load for the Tigers. COURTESY MOTOR CO GADSDEN'S CHRYSLER-PLYMOUTH DEALER 5th Street THE G ADSDE N TIMES PREVIEWS OF COMING ATTRACTIONS (continued) (continued from page 50) more minutes, our conversation turned again to our old classmates. I had recently been to New York where I had seen several of our old friends. I had seen Sonja Andersen, who is now a successful artist. She and some other of her classmates still run around together. Allyson Rice is fashion editor of a leading fashion magazine. Alice Akins is starring on Broadway in a revival of Shaw's Candida. Ginger Shepard is a model, being especially used by Hattie Carnegie to model her frocks. They all live within a few blocks of each other. While in New York, I went to Carnegie Hall where I heard concert pianist Mary Ann Long play. I also saw a telecast in which Alison DuPre Starred. I talked with her after the show, and she told me that Elsie Parsons is a comedienne on one of the leading programs. She said that she passed Foster Johnson's office every day when she came to work. He is a cartoonist with one of the largest newspaper syndicates. He and Wayne Womack are good friends. Wayne is a commercial artist. Alison told me to be sure to see Ringling Brothers' Circus for Miriam Abercrombie is married to one of the main trapeze performers. I had been unable to go though. I did get to see a baseball game between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. Jack Ramsey pitched for Boston. I had heard that Patsy Hauk, Nannie Lou Battles, Betty Head, Joyce Robertson, and Pat Van Sandt were working in New York too, but I never did see them. Charles had just returned from Washington where he had seen Jean Ratledge, Virginia Gilbert, Eloise Walker, and Charlyne Hood. They are all secretaries for different Senators. He had seen Pat Ellis and Judy Stafford too. They work for the F. B. I. Department. While in Washington, Charles had seen the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, which was on tour. He found that Richard Nordman is dancing with it now. He had also gone to one of Barbara Hicks' concerts. All of the critics had rave notices in the papers the next day about her performance. Bobbie then said that she had heard that Sally Lumpkin is a missionary to Nigeria. She said that Daphene Swindall is doing church work too. I remarked that Georgia Erwin is secretary of the Church of Christ of Memphis, and that Lane Robinette is secretary of the First Baptist Church in Atlanta. Speaking of Atlanta reminded me that Graham McClintock is a very well known doctor there. Bobby Don Hooks is field manager of the Atlanta Crackers, and Bill McPherson is business manager. Alice Alford is an interior decorator. She has designed the interiors of most of the leading homes in Altanta. Joan Sherman is the wife of the owner of Loew's Grand Theater. Bert Powers has an electrical shop in Atlanta. Kenneth Reeves, James Knight, John Allen Bishop, and Raymond Frost work for him. Bernard Bar-foot owns a large shoe store, with Stella Sprayberry, Joyce Rudd, Robert Cross, Don Heaton, and Mickey Findley working for him. Clark Andersen works at the airport with the Civil Air Patrol. Bobbie said that she guessed we knew that Steve Brewer is a famous golfer. We said that we did, and Charles remarked that Jerry Payne, Dudley Parsons, and Jimmy Tolson ploy professional football with the Cleveland Browns. Bobbie said that Bud Cochran is coach at Phillips High School in Birmingham and that he and Jean Glenn are married. Charles said that Buster Davidson is coach at Chattanooga High, Wayne Heaton at Albertville, and John Stephens at Anniston. I knew that Kenneth Page is coach at Georgia Tech. Raymond Daniel is now a professional basketball player for Chicago. Gary Leach and Kenneth Wheeler are basketball coaches; Gary at Kentucky and Kenneth at Bradley. Allen Porker is on the way to becoming a famous boxer, and Neil Letson is his manager. Charles said that on a recent trip to Hollywood, he had gone to Billy Day's night club, where he had heard Mona Crim singing with Robert Elton's band. Bobbie then said that Sara Long and Barbara Hill are photographers' models in Hollywood. I remembered that Jo Ann Whorton is one of the most popular comediennes of the screen. Betty Jo Goodlet is the secretary of a famous producer. One of Hollywood's most popular restaurants is Thompson's, owned by Glenn Thompson. His waitresses include Burma Gilliland, Mildred Payne, Wynette Robertson, and Ann Fambrough. The head waiter is Jerry Madderra. Bob Prater is a stunt man for one of the major film companies. Howard Garrison owns one of the studios that makes pictures for television. His best known writer is Glenda Sharpton. Charles interrupted then to say that many of the boys and even some of the girls are in the Armed Services. Peggy Davis joined the Wacs a few years ago and has advanced to the rank of colonel. Faye Woolf and Barbara Gulledge are in the Waves. The Air Force and the Marines seemed to get the majority of the boys. John Collins is now a captain in the Air Force, Don Tillery is a first lieutenant. Kenneth Mount is First Lieutenant and David Lynch is Second Lieutenant. Roy Edwards works in a tower (Continued on next page) PREVIEWS OF COMING ATTRACTIONS (continued) (Continued from page 2M) control room and directs incoming and outgoing planes. Lawrence Taylor, Jack Lane, Robert Pieper, and Fred Allen are Marines. The Coast Guard got Kenneth Herlong and Bobby Jackson. Gerald Beauford remained true to the Army and is now a major. Wayne Millican is an Army recruiting officer in Richmond, Virginia. Bobbie said that she often stayed in Detroit between flights. She said that Robert Floyd is working there with Ford. He is a research chemist, doing work on jet engines for the faster cars. Bettye White-head and her husband also live there. They run one of Arthur Murray's Dance Studios. Bobbie said that June Tramel has a thriving business in Detroit. She is head of a lorge dress making shop, and she is planning to open a New York shop with Barbara Horcrow as manager. Carol Ann Dunn is a social worker, and Thomas Johnson is the owner of a chain of drivc-in theaters. Jimmy Rasbury is manager of a popular cafeteria. Betty Phillips is cashier at the cafeteria, and Thomas Matthews is a cook. Charles said that of a recent convention of the American Legion in Chicago, he had seen several of our classmates. He had met Gail Pinson and her husband walking down the street. Gail's husband is a representative in the Texas legislature. Ho sow Tommy Marshall, who told him that he is an op- tician in Mobile. Tommy told Charles that Charles Thompson also lives there. He is a bank teller. Charles had seen Martha Jean St. John with her husband and two children in a restaurant. They live in Shreveport, Louisiana, where her husband is an accountant. Nancy Bryant had seen Leila Sue one day and told her that she lived with her family in Memphis. Her husband is postmaster there. She also said that Dorothy Jackson worked in the money order department of the post office. Just then, Bobbie looked out the window and said that we were nearing Los Angeles. She had to leave, and she told Charles that he was supposed to return to his seat. After we had said our goodbyes and promised to see each other again sometime, they left for ther respective places. As I fastened my safety belt and prepared for the landing, I recalled that we had accounted for nearly every one of our former classmates during our conversation. It made me feel proud that all of our class had been so successful in life. f Pemem-keA PaAcujon Rentemke i PaAa an PememkeA PaAcujoti I Vv 'Mi oday we are printers of the yearbook of your school.
