ehj . OTKONIYO ' 72 GOOD SPIRIT G.A. WHEABLE SECONDARY SCHOOL LONDON, ONTARIO EDITOR ' S MESSAGE As editor of Otkoniyo ' 72 I would like to thank all those people who made this book possible. A personal thank -you goes to the Yearbook staff. Each member contributed in his own way to the yearbook. Without this support, it would not have been pub- lished. I wo uld also like to thank you for giving your support this year. This book is yours. You are the theme and creator of Otkoniyo ' 72 . It is your enthusiasm, your contributions, your attitudes and your ideas that have made this year and this Yearbook. In future years, you will look back at this, the fourth edition of the Yearbook, and remember all of your experiences, both good and bad. But you will never forget this year or Otkoniyo ' 72 . Jean Crawford, Editor-in-Chief PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE There is always a special flavour in tackling a new task. To your editor, Jean Crawford, I am sure that this year of studies, with the added responsibility of publishing a Yearbook worthy of her school, has been a challenging one. Only a great love for her school has given her the courage to tackle the unknown and to grasp the sweet return of her labours. As your new principal, I too have found this year one of challenge in a posi- tion of responsibility new to me. I have found it a year of growing love for a school that has fostered much affection from both students and staff in the past. As we all look ahead to another year, my sincere wishes for success go out to all, but a special blessing goes to all Warriors for whom this is a farewell year. STANDING: Mr. Mood, Barb Clinton, Walter Nowobranec, Dave Haward, Brent Leckie, Muriel Barr. President ' s Message This has been a most successful year both morally and financially for the Students ' Council. For the first time in a number of years each member of the Council pulled his or her own weight and it is this factor more than any other which I believe earned us the respect of both the students and the Administration. We owe most of our success to you the students, who supported our social events to the utmost limits with a never-ending stream of school spirit. It was this same support that enabled this year ' s Students ' Council to function with a bank balance that was always well out of the red . Since the Council stayed well out of debt this year we were able to raise the calibre of our dances, provide free busing to our roller skating party, provide two free rock-type concerts, and even install a juke box in the cafeteria. This year provisions were made for the impeachment of executives, and I would strongly urge students to make use of it if impeachment becomes necessary. The constitution was also amended so that the Presidency and Vice-Presidency are now separate offices. Second best is no longer good enough; if you wish to be Vice-President now you must run for that office. It is hoped that this move will increase the number of people who are willing to work for the best interests of the students on the council. The Students ' Council also paid to send Wheable wrestler Laurie Bako to wrestling camp this summer to improve his already outstanding wrestling abilities; a move which I personally feel will benefit the Wheable wrestling team for next year, and one which I hope will be continued in future years to benefit our future athletic teams. This year has truly been the highlight of my high school career, probably of my life, up to date. I would like to thank the people who had enough confidence in me to entrust me with this, the highest honour that can be bestowed upon a student by his peers. I was very proud to serve the students of this school to the best of my ability and, once again my humblest thanks and best wishes for all of you. Bill Lenehan President, 1971- ' 72 Head Prefects Marie Parker, Mr. Harrison, Dave Haward, Brent Leckie. The Prefect System The prefect system has made considerable advances this year, showing that the system is far from being finished. Although the numbers are small, the prefects are capable of the responsibilities given to them. The system has been growing in effectiveness and it is the hope of the Head Prefect that it will continue to grow and reach the point where it is supported and respected by all members of the student body. To achieve this purpose, support must come from teachers and administrators. We hope that the system will be considered an asset to the school and that all prefects will continue to show themselves worthy of their position. Special thanks must go to our capable staff advisors, Mr. Harrison, Mr. Sifton, and Mr. Crawford. They have been a great help to us this year. I can ' t come; I ' m in cell 111 again ! Putting It All Together G.A.A. Barb Clinton, President; Miss Baldelli, Teresa Matias. The Girls ' Athletic Association has not accomplished as much as it wished in this school year. The lack of free gyms, during lunch periods cancelled the inter- form activities. Although there were considerable efforts made to begin a programme after school, this is why it did not succeed. The Turnabout was its usual success. Laula Luau , held April 14, produced a good crowd as well as a good time for all. For the second year, we sponsored the G. A. Wheable Invitational Badminton Tournament, with eight schools in competition. This year was of special importance as the G.A.A. and B.A.A. held the com- bined first banquet in Wheable ' s history. Folk Leg,end left the audience highly impressed with our musical achievements as did ' Romeo and Juliet played by the Senior Orchestra. Those of us who performed that night at Alumni Hall, the Secondary School Concert, felt that we had reached the climax of our efforts. Looking back now from the vantage point of having experienced more since then, it was only one of the many bright moments in a very musical year. As in other years, the music program has stressed achievement and participation both in and out of school. Wheable ' s music department has distinguished itself in the extramural field especially this year. Wheable ' s senior choir performed their annual Christmas concert for CFPL Radio. The entire department participated in Alumni Hall and the Kiwanis Festival in bands, orchestras, ensembles and solos. A select group of musicians representing all streams of the department travelled to Public Schools and a Kiwanis Club Dinner in order to sell the idea of music in the High Schools. In all, Wheable ' s musical reputation has been upheld by all these fine performances. The year has ended on a successful note in our spring concert Soundscope ' 72 and the Music Banquet. To those who are graduating, I say ' thank you ' . To those who are staying I say sustain Wheable ' s musical image. Music means participation by everyone and a willingness for combined efforts that can only succeed. It has been a good year for me as President and I hope that the succeeding years will continue to be very good and musical. Sincerely, Muriel Barr. N. , B. ScN. was appointed nurse. During the following years, she established a close rapport with hundreds of students and staff. So it was with shock and sadness that we learned of her sudden death on May 19. Miss McKenzie was so quietly competent in perfor ming her duties that few people realized what a full, at times exciting, and rewarding life she lived. As a high school student in Kincardine, she excelled in sports - in fact, for several years she pitched for the Kincardine Macs - a baseball team of renown in the Bruce Peninsula. This career ended when she came to London to study nursing at Victoria Hospital. Later she graduated from Western with her B. ScN. degree. Sports always remained her chief hobby - she was a low-handicap golfer, a bowler and a curler. At bridge, she competed keenly and skillfully. When the war broke out in 1939, Miss McKenzie enlisted in London ' s 10 medical unit. She was one of the first two nursing sisters to set foot in Normandy following D Day. The immediate goal was to set up a hospital unit to care for the casualties that were part of the price of that historic invasion. Later she served in Holland with Canada ' s liberation forces. Wheable has been fortunate indeed to have had Miss McKenzie during these years. She shared her vast medical knowledge without stint. We shall miss her.
