In scholastic football three things are necessary-the best of coaching, the strongest in school spirit and hard work. This is the winning combination that led to both the City and the Conference Championships for G. A. R. this year. ln the opening game of the season G. A. R. met and defeated a highly rated Larksville eleven by a score of 18 to l3. The Grenadiers, trailing I3- l2 in the closing minutes, showed their fine ability as they scored the winning touchdown with only a few seconds remaining in the game. In their second contest, the Grenadiers were taken by surprise, and before realizing what had happened, found themselves trailing by a score of I3-O to a surprising Plymouth Eleven. The Grenadiers fought hard and were able to score two touchdowns in the second half to tie the score 13-13. This was the only blemish on the G. A. R. team's record this year. The Grenadiers regained their true form the third week ofthe season as they downed a strong Nanticoke team 32-O. This game set a precedent for the remainder of the season for the G. A. R. team kept right on winning by large scores even over the toughest opponents. Playing heads up football, G. A. R. downed their fourth opponent, Luzerne by a 20-0 score. Lu- zerne threatened only once in the contest and they were stopped by the strong forward wall of G. A. R. 67 Third row-Mr. Richards, J. Cooney, M. Thomas, B. Suda, J. Stelmack T. Malarky, T. Lynch, L. Richards Head Coach, Luther Richards f qu-Ida Chet Wasilewski, Luther Richards and Waller Wood A pa! on the back The next game was sort of a breather for G. A. R. as they literally walked all over Hanover. Even the G. A. R. reserves scored as Hanover team was thoroughly beaten by the score of 38-12. The Grenadiers were now rolling along at a fast pace and were fighting hard for the lead of the conference. The powerful grid machine went to work against Newport, and defeated the down river team 46-7. Again G. A. R. reserves played a large part of the game and lived up to expecta- tions. The Grenadiers worked hard the following week preparing for a contest which was supposed to be a great game. The Plains team had lost only one game, that to the conference leaders, Meyers and were supposed to give G. A. R. a battle. To the surprise of all except the team and coaches GAR took the field with a determination to win which was so great that they walloped Plains 38-O and established themselves as a definite threat to win the conference championship. The next game was with Coughlin, the city rival who had upset the GAR team the year before and had knocked them right out of the champion- ship. During the first half, it looked as if the same thing would happen. The half-time score was 7-7. GAR returned to the field after an inspiring talk by Coach Luther Richards, and played their usual good game. They walked off with a 20-7 victory to get even with their city rival. The season was rapidly coming to a close and it looked like a fight for the championship between two traditional rivals, Meyers and GAR. in a game which turned out to be a warm-up for the big game powerful GAR scored at will and defeated Kingston 53-O. Everything went right for the GAR team as they had perfect team work and executed several perfect plays. The Grenadiers then started preparations for the Thanksgiving day game with Meyers. This was to be the big game of the year for both teams had identical records of nine wins and one tie. All of Wyoming Valley looked forward to this game for it was the first time in history of the conference two teams who were playing each other were tied with identical records. When Thanksgiving Day arrived, the GAR team was ready and determined. Well trained and confident, they defeated Meyers 20-O in a hard fought contest to win the Championship and close a very successful season. To Mr. Richards, Mr. Wood, Mr. Wasiliwski and Mr. lgoe our appreciation, and to our boys who were better because they made themselves bet- ter, our graditiude.
