A. R.-the birth of the class of '34. Awed yet inspired by the size and grandeur of the building we were eager to find what lay ahead. Soon we were eighth-graders-old familiars of the school now. At this time clubs and other extra curricular activities began to claim more of our attention. That year many members of the class showed their dramatic talent in Amazon Islef, During our third year -at G. A. R. many changes occurred. Our sister school, Meyers High, opened, Mr. Henning took Nlr. Bacon's place as principal, and Miss Jones replaced Miss Hogg as director of activities. Then, too, as ninth-graders and leaders of Junior High we felt it our duty to display our school spirit, and we became more in evidence at athletic con- tests, plays, and other school functions. Tenth graders, Senior High school students at last! XVhat a thrill it was when we at- tended our first Senior High assembly. We were somebodies now, and we began to acquire the dignity befitting upperclassmen. In our Junior year, with the end in view, we became aware of two very important facts- the necessity of maintaining high standards in our school work, and the social side of school. During this year the midnight oilv was burned more frequently, and dancing classes became more crowded. At a ,Victory Dance we bade farewell to our friendly rivals, the class of '33. And then WE WERE SENIORS! We had reached the top, but with only a third of the number with which we had started. With an active group, we established many precedents. To prepare for a busy year, class ofiicers were elected in November instead of February. An Athletic Dance supplanted the annual Athletic Banquet. The Senior boys honored the girls of the class at the first Senior Party. The first G. A. R. baseball team was organized. Then, after a final whirl of activities, we reached our goal-A-the bitter-sweet day of graduation. And then- Eli Aerenson Chitika Band Z, 3, 45 Orchestra 2, 3, 45 Dancing Class 2, 3, 45 H. R. I- - - - .- .. ...- in iiiemuriant MONG the pleasures and joys of our Senior year, ' there appeared a note of sadness. On May 9, 1934, Mr. H. H. Zeiser, superintendent of Wilkes-Barre Public Schools, died. For many years Mr. Zeiser had given him- self unstintingly in furthering public education in our city and it was because of his efforts that the city schools made such progress. His passing was deeply felt both by the faculty, who in serving under him had come to know and I appreciate his fine attributes of character, and by the students. who had reaped the fruits of his labor and with his passing knew that they had lost that greatest of pos- I sessions - a friend. li1lilnr-I'n- C 'l11'Ijf. .lx.vufI':1l1' flrlflnr. . . . , lflll-fllflllll-574111. , . l rl 51:1-fl' H u v 1'rI4'x.v Stfljf, Garchive .AkNoI.D l'l0ROXVITZ ,IXIARIAN LLEwI:I.I,x'N l'IIII.II- Nllfllfli l RIITII IXIUSKIIWITZ Sx'I.vIA GI5vAN'rIIoR JAMES Mokkis IIAkoI.Ir PRICE I IJoRoTIIx' MIIIUQAN lRusI.x'N MoRr:AN Q RoIxI5kT IJISQUIC Stall' 1954 BIQTTI' IDAVIIQS VIRGINIA NAVliEN TIIELMA BIQMPKINS ALICE JONES lXlARVIN JACKSON SAM Boscn 'I'IIoIvIAs OwIsNs SIDNEY TAKEN FRED KkAcKI5NIfIcI.s RUTII GIBBKHNS .. . . The editors wish to express the thanks they feel to the faculty and student body in general for their part in the publication. In particular they are grateful to Miss Jones, who by her patient perseverence and inspired guidance rendered impossibilities actualities, and enabled us to emerge successfully from the entanglements of editiong to Mr. Pelton, who planned and conducted for the staff the most successful subscription campaign in the history of the schoolg and to Mr. Henning for his support, both moral and actual, to every phase of edition. .311 , - V , U, ,, - ...A ,-.--- ,-...f-A-I-.r-.......-..........,w..., ,.., ... ..... Memorial High School, and many of these were at the instance of the class of 1934. This class has shouldered its responsi- bilities with a great deal of determination. Its loyalty to its school and itself has been outstanding. Its successful completion of prescribed work has been very comparable with that of other classes. Its participation in various school activities has enabled its Alma Mater to establish enviable records. Its fine example of good sportsmanship, self sacrifice and ever ready service has been and will continue to be an inspiration to succeeding classes, and will help them to attain that excellent quality of refinement and culture with the aid of which our Alumni will become respected and useful citizens. lVIy very best wishes go with each member of the class of 1934 as he leaves the portals of G. A. R. and enters new fields of service and responsibility. -Windy MIIIIIQ7 2Ql ,dai ,, arewell Q IS a very common belief, that when a gypsy band has loved a road over which they have travelled, they place a pile of stones thereon, so that other gypsies may recognize it as a road of beauty. We, the Class of 1934, as we wandered through our high school days, have, in imagination, erected tiny roadside altars to mark the roads we love, the roads which we, with many a backward glance, are about to leave forever. As we stand at the parting of the ways, for memories' sake, and, too, that the footsteps of our under classmen may be guided in the ways which we have found to abound in joy, beauty, and achievement, we entrust to you, ere our last farewell is spoken, our map of Romany Patterans, through the medium of the pages of this Garchive of 1934.
