DORIS ELLINGTON. 8 JPrineiTpsrls knowledge is not nearly as great as he had once thought— that there is still a great deal that he can beneficially learn—that he needs more education. The key to gaining an education is desire or genuine ambition. Sufficient desire will give rise to greater effort and determination, which will in turn move toward producing success. Socrates, the great Greek orator and teacher in¬ scribed over his school at Athens the following: " If ye be a lover of instruction you will be well instructed. " By the same token, if ye be not a lover of instruction it makes no difference how much someone tries to instruct you, you will find learning extremely difficult. The way you use your time in school is very impor¬ tant to you. It will in some way influence every day of your lives, so be careful to use this time wisely. We generally think of scholarship as synonomous with education; however, not scholarship, but character is the end or outcome of education; character that will use scholarship for the betterment of mankind, and the glory of God. I. P. Davis, Jr., Principal Mr. J. Tripp, assistant principal Someone once said, " Education is a companion which no misfortune can decrease, no crime destroy, no enemy alienate, no despotism enslave; at home a friend, abroad an introduction; in solitude a solace; in society an ornament. It chastens vice, guides virtue, and gives grace and government to genius. Education may cost financial sacrifice and mental pain, but in both money and life values it will pay every cost one hundred-fold. " The tremendous importance of education cannot be expressed sufficiently in words that it can be fully com¬ prehended by youth, because the full realization of its importance requires maturity and experience. As one matures through adolescence and continues on in years, there follows a steady and continual awareness that his 9 School Staff Mrs. Betty Ashworth, Miss Ruth Carroll, Miss Eleanor Southerland. " LatinClub 1; Monogram Club 2, 3, 4 40 Ouiir Shadows Of Thie Fstst Our Class was unique—not so unique to others but only to us. We had quite a few firsts—some not so good. To start with, we were the first class never to have exam exemptions. Our freshman year was the beginning. We were led by Johnny, Jane, Millie, and Donnie. We did the usual things (jumped rope and jumped rope, studied (?) Latin, cooked and sewed) but we were the first THINKERS and the first to get into trouble for changing locks. (Will who come to the office? Not David, Freddy, and Carol!) We had sad times along with ' the good. (Remember those parties?) Then suddenly we were sophomores and along came Drivers ' Ed., licenses, dates and new fads (unteased hair, pierced ears (in the bathroom?) hair pieces). We had all girl leaders: Lucille, Mot, Jane, and Millie. This year brought us Thumper, the first Powder Puff football game, and chewing gum on the nose. We learned to waltz and that " The key to the future lies in the living past. " We loitered in the halls and we made vows; for instance, we vowed that our Junior play would not fall through! Then we were Juniors; Cathy, Freddy, Tommy, and Frances led us. We went to Rock and Roll Shows, the S. D., Joker ' s Three, and the Ember ' s Club. We had meetings ( " Y ' all ' ve got to sell more magazines! " ) and saw new faces. We studied, took notes, watched Miss Iola, typed, learned to distinguish between O and H 2 SO 4 , and parler en francais . We were the first not to go to Williamsburg. We also had our band (The Gusto ' s). Then came our big, " original " Underwater Fantasy. We worked and had fun. (Remember " Red " and the barn?) Then there was the beach and more fun. And then we were SENIORS. It took some time to get used to being the oldest in school but then we re¬ ceived our GREEN class rings (another first), and we settled down. Our final leaders were Freddy, Terri, Jean, and Bonnie. We ordered graduation supplies, elected superlatives, and did all the other duties of seniors. We received honors, awards, and recognitions. Now gradua¬ tion and the future lie ahead and the history of our unique class comes to a close.
