FOREWORD The editor and staff of this 1957-58 edition of the FULTON FALCON have tried to create and preserve as accurate a record as possible of the activities of our school year, as well as a com- plete roster of our school per- sonnel. They have tried to produce a yearbook that will not only please you now, but increase in sentimental value as the years go by. The many events of our senior year at Fulton will be rernem- bered throughout the coming years. As the years march on we shall look back on the pleas- ant memories and relive those wonderful days. This large membership is proof that teenagers realize the need for spritual training in early life. The programs are planned to bring at- tention to the objectives of the club: l. Discourage profanity 2. Stress obedience to parents 3. Teach the value of church attendance 4. Encourage honesty 5. Prove to teenagers the value of clean, Christian recreation, Hr- ,' The first program of the year features talks by the new officers stressing the ob- objectives. Other programs during the school year include movies, singing, and talks given by ministers and other people who are in' terested in young people and their moral and spiritual guidance. The club is open to every- one. The annual proiects are Christmas carol- ing, donations to the organ fund, and a club banquet during the spring term. In spite of criticism and publicity about young people of today, clubs such as the Bible Club prove that we do have God with us. 103 4 Q T-N 'mc . I5 A ' Q A hp... West put a damper to the Falcon flame the following week, winning an upset game, 8 to 6. Kingsport was next! D. Steadman and company shocked the Falcons 27 to O, Feb. 13. Fulton, trying to break the losing streak, was stunned by Young's Yellowiackets 20 to 6 at Dutf Field. ln one of the season's hardest fought games, Rule High trounced the Falcons 12 to 6 before 2000 fans, October 7. Bearden fol- lowed with a hard-fought 12 to 6 win. Traveling to revenge-hungry Chattanooga Central the Falcon shock troops were mauled A2-O before the fray ended. In the semi- windup, Central's Bobcats turned the trick and defeated Fulton 27-O. Behind the strong arm of tailback Jackie Jones, the Falcons defeated East High 14-13 to end a losing but spirited 1957 season. 135 lxxtf L il tl 'L Q lf "1 'f' LAM 4 -1irf"F2-fits-elif . Coach Pete Craig was beaming with pride following the 1957-58 basketball season- proud of the team, proud of the school, and proud of each player on the outstanding Ful- ton team that captured the 6th District Bas- ketball Tournament. The team was a surprise to everyone as it fought its way up to the semi-finals in the Region Il tournament in early March. Sur- prising because the spectators were watching a team that had previously lost its first nine games in a row. Fulton did not have the touch in its first nine games, but when "we began to pull together we were tough." The Falcons won 15 games and lost 13. They averaged 61.4 points a game to their opponents' 62.6. In rebounding, the tall Fal- cons cleared an average of 44.0 loose balls off the boards to their opponents' 40.7. Individual honors have to be given to the Falcons' 6'7" iunior center and forward, Frank "Moose" Turner, and All-Stater, Most Valuable Player in the District tourney, and good for 17.9 points a game. Turner averaged 14.8 rebounds a game, had a free throw shooting average of 60.1, accumulated 93 points in the District tournament, and spearheaded the Fal- con attack. Joe Cockrum averaged 10.1 points a game for Fulton. The 6'4V2", All-City senior center had a field goal shooting average of 40.9. Tyson McGhee, member of the Region II All- Star team along with Turner, averaged 9.8 points a game and captained the Fulton squad along with 6'1" senior Ernie Hill, forward, who pumped in 7.8 points each game. Mickey Dafferner, 5'9V2" guard, was on the District All-Star team along with Turner. The ball- hawing sandy blond led to the Falcons' fast break. Backing up this impressive front line at- tack were forwards Ronnie Phillips, senior 14.9 a gameb, sophomore David Slagle 13.41, guards Terry Carmeron, senior, Tommy House- wright, senior 14.8 a game and a 50.0 shoot- ing averagelg and sophomore Frank Dowling. Possibly one of FuIton's greatest teams, the 1957-58 squad is without a doubt the best come-from-behind bunch yet. Coach Craig's pride was only a fraction of the joy registered on the faces of the entire student body. In the District Six tournament the Falcons downed Farragut, Rule, Bearden and Central in succession and won the District champion- ship. Frank Turner and Mickey Dafferner were chosen to the All-Star team, Turner becoming the Most Valuable player. Coach Craig was iubilantly carried off the court. In their first Region ll match the Falcons turned back Huntsville. Two nights later the forces from Lake City downed the Falcons and the curtains were lowered on the glorious 1957-58 basketball season. Turner and Tyson McGhee made the All-Tournament team.
