To his classes he was ever an inspiration in thought, in advice, and in knowledge. He gave more than just mere instruction-there was al- ways something of profound value which each pupil could take and could use for a lifetime. The lesson plans with which Mr. Thompson taught his classes were scholar- ly, thought provoking, and thorough. Having a deep understanding and love for his fellow man, Mr. Thompson was al- ways willing to give of his time-even when he felt little like doing so-to anyone who had a perplexing problem to be solved. Any desire of praise for his work was totally foreign to his personality. What he did was done without thought of recompense. As William Ernest Henly, a well-known British man of letters, once said, ". . . I thank whatever gods may be for my un- conquerable soul . . ." Let such a state- ment be made of the memory of the spirit of Charles Thompson- In memory of one whom we hold in our hearts forever. It is our belief that J im was as much a part of Fulton High as the sunshine streaming through the windows in spring. May he bless the meadows of Heaven as well as he brightened the con- fines of this earth. 35 . 31 ,,.1-- --A vrr - ' f H 'f'ff f Q mngk 5' -Q. WW V OOO!!! ' S0665 - Of 54 The prophecy you are about to read is false. Only the handwriting has been changed to protect the author. It was Tuesday. 1 was working the noon watch of Eastern State. My partner's name is Sam. My name's Monday flost weekend, you understandii 12:01 I got a call on the 419, Teddy Baker had been caught impersonating Jerry Lewis. Glen Sherrod was in on the deal, thinks he's Dean Martin. Brought 'em to headquarters fComer'sj for questioning. After a grueling 5 minutes they began singing. It was a sad tale- Betty Beeler, Marvelyn Buckner, and Jewel Suffridge had been "pulling hair" over who was to be Marilyn Monroe,s successor. I booked them on the 304- and turned them over to the chief, "Simple" Toole, known for his ability to "dig, dig, dig." 12:02 The chief sent me and Sam over to the world-famous Wolf Bakeries, caterers to all the elite and Bert Gronseth. Someone had been stealing "Brownies" We nabbed the thief, Johnny Mc Dade. His getaway car was driven by the notorious Rainwater twins, and his gunmoll, Faye Stanford, was perched in the rumble seat, swigging a fifth of "Three Snoots Distilled Sparkling Water." Got a call on the 3-way ankle television from the chief. The facts, just the facts, pointed to Jim "Brassnucks" Pryor. We booked 'em on the 303 and started to grab a gooey sandwich and a muddy cup of coffee at Seagraves' Shack when a 4-alarm call from our spy and all-round stoolie, Jerry Yearwood, sent us over to P. U. fPodunk University.J 12:03 "Elmo" Harb, world-renowned olympic star, famed in the walking race and discus throw, had been caught trying to stage a tee-shirt raid on the Uga Uga Uga fraternity house. Her accomplices were Yvonne Bridges, Pat Elmore, Glenna Force, Ann Thorpe, and Barbara Sherrod. The president of the college, Wayne Vineyard, gave us a list of the victims. He stated that these huge girls were picking on the smallest boys in the fraternity-"Married Man" Evars, "Cuz" Harrington, "Sam" Peake, "Dumb-Head" Massengil, and "Flirt" Haskew. When suddenly a chick began moving my way - kept mumbling something about "I must keep in step. I must keep in step . . Y' Heard someone mention her name - Loretta Wilson - and her occupation -trying to keep up with "Shortie" Hong. 12:04 Saw a suspicious-looking character. Followed it into a dive. Just happened to be my favorite bar, Beelers', run by Hoiman. The bartender, George Groseclose, said to look in the back room. 36 I did. Found "Lefty" Pittman and "Chewing Gum Kid" Painter in a hot game of Old Maid. They said they hadn't seen anybody come in, however, they said that the mysterious stranger had been carrying a violin case. Iheard a weird noise. Didn't know whether it was human or not. Looked and saw Sarah Pierce, Marcia Goodstein, Sandra Snodderly, and Vivian Turner quarteting, "Rollin' Down the Mountain." Pierce said with a raised eyebrow, "Saw Sunny Hines shagging down through here a minute ago, Earl Ogle creeping afterf, Drouling Goodstein said, "I saw a violin case with blond hair go thatawayf' Went thataway. Stumbled over the richest beggar in town, "John R." Spainhower, with his accomplice, Georgia Worsham. They said that they had seen a violin case with blond hair go into the Y.M.C.A. There standing in the middle of the floor was Emily Remine and her magic Violin. Asked what was in her violin case. She asked why 1 wanted to know. I said, "Just wanta get the facts, mam." I looked in the case. Just what I had suspected all along-melted ice cream. Booked her for smuggling melted ice cream 12:05 Cot a tip from "Ears', Byars, a reliable stool pigeon, that he had traced Howard Wilson, an F.B.I. man for the Communists, and last year's top uundercover mann in the country, to a waterfront dive run by "Bouncer" Dixon. Took a run down there. My eyes roamed to the torch singer, "Slinky" Wong. She was some doll. We had a rough battle with Wilson's bodyguards, Betty ,lo Carmichial, Shirley Kelso, and Carolyn Wyrick, but finally hooked ,em and took 'em on a 315. Through a tip from Wilson, we got a lead on Carol "Flash'-' Pitts, ringleader of the notorious Space Patrol, who had been suspected of trying to smuggle laughs in'Geometry Class for some time. Her co-pilot, "Ten- Star-General Joyce The-Last-Name-Can't-Be-Spelled-Read-Or-Pronounced" was a shady-looking charac- ter too. I took them in on a 407. 12:06 Got a call from "Muck Town." "Fat Man" Dyer and his band were disturbing the peace. Some of the band mernbers were: Barbara Gaut-tuba, Becky Slack-bass drumg Norman Shannon -piccolog Bob Shipley-chimes, Bill Lawson-guitar, and Sunny Hines-triangle. Bruce and Bernard Clifton insisted on giving us a sample of their famed hoochy-koochy dance, "Double Troublef, before we booked 'em on a 407 and the "Black Miriahi' came, with Neal Busch at the wheel. 12:07 We returned to headquarters-time sure seemed to have passed quickly- we found we had gotten every thing but the facts, just the facts, and we began putting 419, 3044, 303, 206, 315, and 4-07 together --they all added up to just one thing -the class of 1954! How did we get the answer? Each Home Group has a representative on this Council, and all members have taken an active part in bringing up suggestions for the betterment of our school. ,lay Bayless is the President of this year's Council. 7-7 -Y l 1 01405 We, the editors of this Yearbook, in view of what we term the greatest show of unselfish sports- manship and courage ever witnessed in local high school circles, humbly dedicate this sports section to Ddltdfd qfoaetoag Don, who was captain of our track team last year, has graduated, but the memory of his notable sacrifice will live forever in our hearts. While training for the regional meet last year, Don hurt his foot seriously. Knowing that any points he could obtain would be necessary for the championship, he never the less ran, ignoring the pain which kept him from walking oii the field after the race. Needless to say, his teammates later carried him to the judges stand to receive the team trophy for first place. The stunning blow came later in the week when it was discovered that Don's foot had been broken. He had gained second place in the half mile run and fourth place in the mile run with a broken foot! x 89 '7 5, f -32 1 . 14 'Milf Q A5155 mit, wg, 1, - ,Lwfff kg H I-.,1Q'-.effwcfwfi 5 22,1 'x.iT'i': Wa F , fir: wifi J: , " . Sharp, Football Coach Charles Wildman Basketball Coach akon Padma- 7 955 Fulton 25 Young 6 The start of a very successful season was played in 80-plus weather, and the Falcons were as hot as the thermometer. Leading the conquest of the cross-town yellowjackets were Benny Dyer and Ronnie Peake. Fulton 25 Sparta 0 This was perhaps our most impressive victory. Yearwood tore the Sparta line to shreds, and when he was stopped, Dyer made like Gilmer and hit Bayless with pass after pass. Just too much Falcon. Fulton 46 Bearden 13 One word would explain this victory over the under-manned Bulldogs-Rose. The little U45 lb.l halfback directed his second string charges to four touchdowns, scoring three himself. Peake was in the supporting role. Fulton 19 LaFollette 0 This one was tough. Played in heavy mud, the Falcons scored 19 points in the first half and then bogged down in the slime. This was LaFollette's first loss in 21 starts. Fulton 19 Jefferson City 28 Ouchl All East-Tennessee Jimmy fMule'J Noe really lived up to his press clippings in this one. He scored two touchdowns, set up another on a breakaway run, and kicked all four extra points. Dyer was tops for us. 92 IIIIIL- -Y ll .- Y .ati .. .ll Fulton 13. Rule 12 Capt. Bob Evars' big left toe was the difference in this one as he kicked the fourth-quarter extra point that broke the Golden Bear's back. Bayless was the big gun, while Harrington and Bryson were terrific on defense. Fulton 0 Central 12 Another bad one. Two long gains and sterling offensive play by All-Southern David Emory was just too much for us poor little Falcons. Still, with a few breaks, this one could have gone either way. Fulton 21 Morristown 19 This one rested on Benjamin Dyer's strong right arm, and he came through beautifully. Bayless caught 'em all night in sub-freezing weather, while Yearwood went like a wild bull. The game was just as close as the score implies. Fulton 14- West 7 This one was rather tough. Battling from behind, the Falcons squeaked past their west-side rivals on the strength of Bob Foust's air arm. These Rebels are getting tougher every year. Fulton 7 East 14- We lost the City Championship on this game. Mickey Ellenburg and Bob Small, Basketballers, proved too tough for the Falcon charges. A last two second TD broke up a tie game brought on by the Foust-to- Bayless combo. The last of a great season.
