Night games at stocker “Ligrani’s Raiders.” That’s who the Fruita Monument football team said they were. They fought and strived for a good season. Although the beginning looked rough, the team pushed and worked hard to beat the odds. With a junior-dominated team, the Cats were young and inexperienced; but what they lacked in experience, they began to gain in momentum. In his third year as head coach and as first-year Activities Director, Ligrani had the advantage of one of the state’s best coaching staffs. Dan Miller, in his fourth year, was in charge of the offense and defense lines. Steve Quimby, also in his fourth year, coached the offense and defense backs. Steve Congdon, second year, and Jim Stockert, first year, coached the Junior Varsity. 27 1. The Delta Panther game at Stocker Stadium. 2. Their business and community activities are done in the form of fund raising. Some goals of FBLA are to develop vocational com- petencies, promoting civic and person- al responsibilities, and develop charac- ter. They are also provided with career information through the career van and field trips. All these are important to FBLA but more important to these students is helping them to help them- selves find an interest and understand- ing in the business enterprise and de- velop strong leadership abilities. Every year the Future Business Lead- ers prepare and look forward to Dis- trict and State Conferences where each student is tested in different busi- ness areas. Some of these areas include general business, accounting I II and typing. This past year, Eddie Fisher and Jenni- fer Wakeen attended the Regional Conference in Dallas, Texas, to bring back to Fruita Monument’s FBLA leadership ideas. c Working together for a successful tomorrow 79 FFA earns honors 1. The judging teams in Field Crops and Horse both received bronze awards. During November the chapter sent two members to the National FFA Convention in Kansas City. The entire chapter sold citrus fruit and pecans. In December they collected canned goods or donations for the Salvation Army and helped the Fruita Lions Club repair toys for needy children. January 14-16 the 15 members earning the most points under the chapter’s awards system attended the National Western Stock Show in Denver. During National FFA Week in February the chapter hosted an open house in the Ag department. Spring brings new officers, the Parent-Member Banquet, and a Chapter Sweetheart and attendants. Chapter awards are presented, and parents are honored. During the first week of June, members attend the State FFA Convention. Music for all seasons The Jazz Band, under the direction of Greg Karly, played for school concerts, community entertainment and a Jazz Festival at the University of Northern Colorado. The String Ensemble is the first organization of this type at Fruita for quite some time. The six members: Cammie Burger, Sandy Montano, Korrene Norris, Denie Tuttle and Don Worth performed for school functions and took part in an orchestra clinic in January. (Pictured this page) 99 Under the guidance of Mark Madsen, this year’s speech team has become a force to be reckoned with both at home and away. The team placed some of their members at every meet they attended this year. Trophy winners for this year were: seniors Shelly Everett. Barb Morrell. Nancy Gore, and Ethel Lucore; juniors Steve Hoffman. Karl Studebak- er. Tina Scott, Kori Wilson. Debbie Clark. Lori Wilson. Thelma Fisher. Kellene Nelson and Marie Mischell; sopho- mores Missie Knothe and Sutton Hayward. The speech season runs from October to April, and long hours of hard work and dedication go into the building of a quality team. The team is a charter member of the National Forensic League, and members participate in NFL meets in the spring and earn NFL speakers points for their partici- pation in meets earlier in the year. These points are added together to qualify members for NFL honors. The officers for this year were President, Barb Morrell: Vice President. Debbie Clark: and Secretary-Treasurer, Nancy Gore. i £ nGpSi •• Speech team speaks out 1. This year’s speech team. 2. The proud owners of some very impres- sive hardware. 3. It’s Story Weather Radio and T.V. can make you a star. The Radio and T.V. class of first semester thought it was exciting and fun with Linda Cates, teacher. In radio everyone in class had a chance to go down to Q-FM, KEXO and KSTR to do live and taped broadcasts of the Wildcat News. They also enjoyed meeting D.J.s Larry Milhouse and Robert Saint John, guest speakers in class. Ya, 111 play co-ed ball So you do believe in ERA on the field. Roll em cue talent Hot Stuff! In T.V. production everyone had a chance to be director, cameraman and floor direc- tor, to create sets and props, and to per- form their favorite: the talent. Some pro- grams were The Dolly Parton Show, Street People and a basketball show star- ing Tyrone Shoelace. After the classes watched our work they replied it was ex- citing. The classes did commercials such as Copenhagen Chew, Aspen, and De- senex. Next, everyone was able to do news shows. They had news announcers, a sports announcer and a weather person. XXDarin had a dream. For many nights he sat pondering in the darkness what he could do to help the Equal Rights Amendment. Then it dawned on him. An all male cheerleading team. Not to imitate the pom-pon girls or cheer- leaders, but to form a group of manly men to do manly cheers. To full fill this dream he needed four manly disciples. No, wait! They needed to be four manly Senior disciples. He set upon the task of finding the manly macho seniors that he need- ed. Darrin looked everywhere. Schools, door to door, state penitentiaries and mental health fa- cilities. Just about when he was going to say “enough” and quit. He noticed a young, deject- ed photographer. He was sitting on a park bench with a bottle of Boones Farm Strawber- ry Hill soda in a brown paper bag. The photographer claimed his name was Mike; Mimo was the name he went by though. Darrin knew Mike was macho because of the tell-tale six-month-old growth of peach fuzzy on his lip. The first member had been found. Darrin next discovery was Dave. Dave had been found in downtown Grand Junction walk- ing his pet tarantula. Dave agreed to join Darrin and Mimo and the group grew to three in strengh. Next came Merve, whose suspenders looked like something out of “Mork and Mindy”. Merv’s addition to the group as the token blonde increased the group strength to four manly men. The last addition was that of Gary. He was ac- cepted because everyone felt sorry for him be- cause he was a foreigner. There were now five manly macho seniors. Darrin’s dream was com- ing ture. The DISCO DRILL TEAM was a re- ality. All that was needed now was a coach and a manager. But who could handle five manly seniors? The task of controlling them was assigned to Ms. Kelly Williams. Under coach Williams, the team became a well percisioned team. The tim- ing, cartwheels and tumbling during routines became 2% perfect. They also made beautiful non-clashing uniforms to wear. But there was still something missing. To fill the still unfilled empty gap remaining in the line-up, Susan Edris was hired as the team’s manager coach even though she was a sopho- more. Now, after the team was finally assem- bled and after two hours of vigarous practice spread over five days, the team made its debut at the KEXO FMHS faculty game. They per- formed to a crowd of FMHS fans at a pep as- sembly three days later. Darrin’s dream be- came a reality. 4 XT £ Officers President- Cathy Holthus Vice President- Laura Seybold Secretary- Susan Edris Representatives: Michelle Bligh - Darren Evans Barbara Johnson - Amy Kimbrough Sherry Leech - Jack O’Neil Susan Willney.
