The school year of 1963-64 must surely go down in the history of Fruita High School as one, if not the finest since the conception of this fine institution. Both on the field of athletic competition and in the classroom FHS students attained honor and recognition for outstanding accomplishments. In the academis world 1964 graduates were awarded scholarships to most every state institution as well as out of state colleges and universities. Among the honors was a National Merit Winner, a Boettcher Foundation scholarship, Joint Honor scholar- ships and other academic awards in specific fields such as music, drams and science. The name, Wildcats appeared on sport pages throughout the state as Blue and White athletic teams brought home a state upper division wrestling championship, a runner-up trophy in football and baseball and a conference championship in basket- ball. It is with deep respect that we, the 1964 annual staff, extend a warm and sincere thank you to the students, the faculty, to all of the personnel who made contributions toward making Fruita High School the state's finest. May the future be even brighter than our blazing past and may future classes in future ach even higher heights of success in all endeavors. 4 The 1964 Annual Staff 1964 MR. CHARLES R. •FOSTER; B. A. The cats finished with a season mark of ten wins and two losses. During the regular season the blue and white racked up a total of 270 points while limiting their opposition to 52. They outgained their opponents in total yardage by a better than two to one margin. The locals traveled 2448 yards compared to 1030 for their competition. A strong defense netted the Wildcats six shutouts during the regular season and one in the state quarterfinals. Fruita's best offensive performance was against the Nucla Mustangs when the Blue and White chalked up a total of 65 counters. Leading point-maker during the regular season was Bart Bortles who tallied 67. He was followed by Don Paris with 54 and Rex Widegren with 53. GREAT LAKES AND VAN DYKE MODELS HWY 6-50 SENIOR CLASS HISTORY When the Seniors of 1964 started high school in 1961, they were, as usual, unorganized and rather lazy after a long summer. The year started with election of officers David Young, Lee Ann Wells and Jim Hoisington. The first big event of the Sophomore year was Homecoming. Louise Wells was our attendant while our float took first place. Sophomore class favor- ites were Louise Wells and Amadeo Silva. Scholarship honors were awarded to Judy Bourg and Jay Shelton. As Juniors our officers were Verle Grauberger, Jerry Gobbo and Mary Jo Moon. Lee Ann Wells was our attendant at homecoming. Junior cheerleaders were Mary Joan Moon, Rose Welch and Pauline Espinosa. The class play was Cinderella Complex. A junior girl, Sharon Squires was FFA Sweetheart attendant. Highlight of the year was the sponsoring of the prom. Useing the theme, Southern Shadows, the prom was a great success. During the elections Louise Wells was chosen head girl while favorites were Lee Ann Wells and Verl Grauberger. Jay Shelton was our leader, scholasticaly while David Young was elected head boy. Fall of 1963 was the beginning of the end as we elected new officers in the persons of Jerry Gobbo, Darrel Keeler, Sharon Squires and Judy Bourg. Homecoming was successful as we defeated Gunnison and once again had the winning float. Louise Wells was our queen. Senior cheerleaders were Lee Ann Wells, Pauline Espinosa and Rose Welch. In conjunction with the junior class we presented the play, Babes In Toy- land . Seniors Barbara Koziol and Allen Clyde had the lead roles. Class favorites were Louise Wells and Jerry Gobbo. Our class flower was the rose with our colors crimson and white. The class motto was Finished, yet just begun. Prom theme was Grecian Terraces.” Annual King and Queen were seniors Darrel Keeler and Jo Ann Foster. Sneak Day was May 14 and all seniors and sponsors, Mr. Noxon, Mr. Pollock and Mrs. Wescoatt had a memorable time. Baccalaureate was May 24 with commencement exercises May 27. 102 1963-64 IN REVIEW Fruita High School proved to be a busy place in the fall as the students started with activities and buckled down to their studies. Football season was a rousing success as the Wildcats marched through the Gunnison Valley League undefeated. Fruita advanced to the finals by beating Monte Vista and Olathe, but lost to the State Champions, Julesburg. Homecoming almost caught us unaware, but after some frantic confusion and panic, the floats were completed for the parade through town. Leading the colorful pro- cession was Homecoming Queen Louise Wells and her attendants Sharon Squires, Diana Dishman, and Connie Greer. That evening, to crown the festivities, Fruita mauled Gunnison 32-0. Winter descended and both Coach Pollock and Coach Silliman were kept busy working the wrestling and basketball squads. Hard work paid off! The wrestling squad took state after battling a tough Denver Lincoln team. Coach Silliman then surprised everyone by producing a strong basketball team that swept up the league crown, only to lose two straight in the state tournament in Denver. Shortly before Christmas the Junior and Senior classes presented a combined play, Babes In Toyland. Everyone held their breath. Again the Wildcat spirit proved undefeatable as the cast, directed by Mr. Foster, Mr. Veslack, and Mr. Staggers, gave four performances, each one being loudly applauded by people throughout the community and the valley. The Snowball Dance was the last social affair before school dismissed for the Christmas vacation.......and a well needed rest. Reigning Queen and King were Judy Brown and Bart Bortles. Spring came (late, of course!) but by now everyone knew this was an exceptional year for Fruita. We couldn't lose. The baseball and track teams, not to be out- done, rose to the occasion, trounced all comers, and jubiliantly went to state. The Sweetheart Dance and the Carnival were well received by the students, the faculty, and the townspeople. King and Queen for the Sweetheart Dance were Don Paris and Lee Ann Wells. Clyde Etcheverry and Judi Brown reigned over the carnival. The Band Tournament was held in Grand Junction where the Wildcats, under Mr. Veslack, strutted their sharp new uniforms to cop high honors. The Prom, with the help of sponsors, concerned mothers, and a lot of hard working juniors, turned out to be a night not to soon forgot by those who attended. The Seniors (after hearing a lot of rumors) were a little hesitant about entering the gym, but, once inside, found the place exquisitly decorated. The theme was GRECIAN TERRACE. Entrance was through a marble portal, with a setting sun over the mountains as a background, onto a raised staircase where new arrivals could be seen. The room was generously decorated with crepe and light net- ting which was strung overhead. The walls were covered as if by marble, were supported by massive pillars and were decorated with signs of the Zodiac. Spotlighted in the center of the room was a three teired waterfall which cas- caded into the flowers and pond below. The banquet dinner was served smor- gasborg style, and entertainment was provided by the Dimensions. Reigning Queen and King were Judy Bourg and Larry Overbye. The same week politicin' captured the school as Carl Kortum, Danny Roberts and Gary Tompkins competed for the position of head boy. Judy Brown, Deena Buniger and Bonnie Quimby ran for head girl; Danny Roberts and Judy Brown were victorious. On Thursday, May 14, the seniors gleefully boarded the busses for Sneak Day at Glenwood Springs and Hanging Lake. They returned late that evening, quite a bit more subdued and tired. Final events of the year were Baccalaureate on May 24 and Graduation evening May 27. 103 t'a- w ' v.- g a ' v.;... ■ • • m V 4 ■ r ' ilVt • “ 0 v' L ‘ MK - v ( ' 4' .. “' • ’ - ‘V % V 4 v v ■■ • ■ t f- -: •NlSfci‘ V • V V vvj sy W.. ■ ' i■'■ -: hJ •i y..
