Every year the staff attends the annual Journalism Conference in Grand Junction to learn more about publishing the school paper. Although it's been rocky going and a lot of work on a certain few, we, the staff, hope that in this book we have captured and recorded many memories of the past school year for you. One small favor we would ask of you. Please patronize our ad- vertisers. for without them this Annual would have been impossible. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY We, the Seniors of 1961, started our three years of high school with the usual Fresh- man-Sophomore picnic. We had ours down by the river with many mosquitoes and little food. After a summer to recuperate, we were actually Sophomores! We started right out with officer elections. Joe Garlitz was elected president; Larry Steele, vice-pres- ident; Jim Heiny, secretary; and Cecil Valencia as treasurer. Our sponsors were Miss Elder, Mr. Templeton, and Mr. Richardson, who, if we may comment, was the only one with courage enough, or whatever it took to stick with us for 3 years. Our Class favorites were Jerry Slaugh and Deanna Bourg. Homecoming was soon upon us with the theme of Autumn Serenade. That being our first experience at building a float, we worked and worked and worked. We were quite proud of the finished product even though we didn’t win a prize. Deanna Bourg was chosen as the Sophomore Attendant from our class that year. In February we sponsored the Sweetheart Dance with the theme of The Tender Trap. Petra Powell and Kyle Revelle reigned as King and Queen of the affair. The traditional Freshman-Sophomore picnic was next on our calendar of events. We held ours in the cafeteria because our sponsors were under the impression that it was going to rain. (It didn't.) The class nominated Deanna Bourg, Roberta White and Erma Revelle to run as can- didates for the office of Head Girl. After a week of vigorous campaigning, elections were held. The student body chose Roberta. These two events brought our Sophomore year to a close. The next fall we were back, as Juniors, with plans and ideas for the coming year. Election of officers was the first project. The class chose Bonnie Baker as president, Bob Cheedle as vice-president, Georgia Neuberger as secretary, and Ella Jean Carroll as treasurer. Our sponsors were Mr. Richardson and Mr. Miller. Homecoming was the next big event. The theme was Superstitions as the game was on Friday the 13th. Jackie Saunders was elected the Junior Attendant by the class. We Juniors were a busy crew that week as we were in charge of the dance, concessions at the game, as well as having a float to build. All went well though and the event was proclaimed a success. The class play that year was entitled Dear Ruth. Everyone who had a hand in the production immensely enjoyed presenting the play at the two performances. Class favorites our Junior year were Bonnie Baker and Alan Gobbo. The biggest money making project of the year was next. The selling of Christmas Cards with the Juniors and Seniors competing against each other with the losers giving a party for the winners. Much to our dismay we were the losers and therefore gave the Seniors a party following the theme Year 2000. On February 29th, that year being Leap Year, we sponsored a Twerp Dance with the girls asking the boys and presenting their dates with corsages made of fruits and vegetables. At the annual Student Council Carnival the class sponsored a Fortune Telling Booth and a Jelly Bean Guessing Booth. Our projects yielded the huge profit of 20£. Our can- didates for Carnival King and Queen, Jim Heiny and Josephine Brown, were chosen by the student body to reign over the event. Finally the big event of the year arrived. The prom. We chose as our theme My Blue Heaven. We decorated the gym as we imagined heaven would look with castles, clouds and of course angels. Of course, there were the usual squabbles and scraps be- fore the big night arrived, but it was considered a huge success by everyone who attended. About this same time, student body elections drew nigh. The class nominated Alan Gifford, Jerry Slaugh, and Jerry Johnson to run for the office of Head Boy. The student body chose Jerry Johnson. Thus ended our eventful Junior year. In the fall of 1960 we returned for our final year at Fruita High as the mighty or not so mighty Seniors. We started the ball rolling with officer elections. Elected were pres- ident, Jackie Saunders; vice-president, Larry Steele; secretary, Georgia Neuberger; and Erma Revelle as treasurer. Our sponsors for this last year were Mrs. Loeffler, Mr. Miller and Mr. Richardson. One of the first things we did was to order our cards and announcements for gradua- tion which seemed to be in the far flung future. Homecoming with the theme of Top Pops was the next event for us to look for- ward to. Deanna Bourg and Josephine Brown were chosen by the class as candidates for Homecoming Queen. The student body chose Josephine with Deanna as Senior Attend- ant. Once again as a money making project we sold Christmas Cards and once again were outsold and defeated by our competitors, the Juniors. The Juniors never received their party, much to their avail, because of difficulties with the company and settling up of the profits. In December we sponsored the annual Snowball Dance. Deanna Bourg and Alan Gobbo reigned as King and Queen. Next came the Senior Class Play Cheaper By The Dozen. Again everyone who helped with the production had an enjoyable time. Meanwhile, from the beginning of the school term the previous fall, the counselor and teachers had been helping us to decide on something definite about our future. They assisted us in applying to various colleges, meeting the many entrance requirements, and trying for the many scholarships offered. They provided information about the Col- lege Board Exams and the ACT Tests which many students took. During this time the class chose its motto, flower, and colors. The outcome being Within Ourselves Our Future Lies as our motto, the orchid as our flower and pale laven- dar and gold being our colors. Time sped by swiftly those last two or three months with Jim Heiny and Jackie Saunders being chosen as class favorites. We were measured for and ordered our caps and gowns for graduation which sud- denly didn't seem so far flung in the future. The prom given for us by the Juniors was very cleverly decorated to the theme of Paradise of the Deep. The banquet held at the Cafe Caravan for the first time proved to be highly successful. Suddenly, for us, there were only two very short weeks of school left. We went to Glenwood Springs for our Sneak Day where everyone spent a fun filled day swimming and exploring the town. That evening we, a bunch of pooped Seniors, returned to Grand Junction for a delicious smorgasbord at the Pony Express Restaurant. Later that evening, grateful to be home and to have a soft bed, we collapsed. We were especially tired as most of us'had enjoyed a slumberless slumber party, one place or another, the night before. Our final event at Fruita High had at last arrived. That of graduation. Sunday, May 28, 1961, we held our Baccalaureate Service. On May 31, 1961, at Commence- ment Exercises, we, 79 strong, took our official leave of Fruita High School. Each to go our separate ways in the world that stood waiting for us. IN DAYS GONE BY . . .
