We were not only confronted with continual change in the social, political, economic and educational aspects of modern life but also with the rapidity with which such change was taking place. We lived through the "depression" of the thirties and World War II of the forties. This was followed by Sputnik during the fifties with the terrific revival in science and the development of space exploration. Education, especially in a democracy such as ours, reflects all aspects of the society that it serves. During this short period in history, man's knowledge about both himselfand his world has increased many fold. Thus knowledge has remained in a continual state of flux. School offerings have been continually revised, reviewed and revised again. Teaching methods have also been modified to meet the needs of an ever changing world. However today's students have fundamentally changed little during this period. It is true that they are somewhat taller and weigh slightly more. They express themselves differently and at times we have difficulty accepting their dress. These changes can best be described as their reaction to Mr. Benjamin Werth Treasurer their changing environment. Boys and girls have on the whole, always been excellent students most eager to learn and ready for anv challenge. Their loyalty and cooperation has been and continues to be beyond reproach. They have been willing to accept responsibilities and carry out assignments. They are sincere, Eager and God fearing. With few exceptions, they have always been a joy to teachers and other educators alike. They have proven to be the strength of our past as well as the hope for our future. Vernon W. SENIOR SPONSORED ORPHANS GIRUS STATE Girls state was an unforgettable educational experience broaden- ing both the political and social horizons of the girls who attended. It offered an opportunity for each girl to become involved in the prac- tical problems a politician encounters and the complex issues he must evaluate. Both the insight into the American political system and the many acquaintences each girl acquired make this a unique experience for those who were chosen. BARB WEST BOY'S STATE 3 Boy's state is a program sponsored by the American Legion in an effort to give today's youth some insight into the government of their state. Each summer, over 1000 boys from all regions of the state assemble at a college campus to set up their own government. During the six day stay, the boys participate in government at the city. county and state levels, and campaigns. This ex- perience also leads to contact with many different types of people, helping the boys gain deeper insight into human nature and its vagaries. Although the stay is short, the experience gained and the friends made make the endeavor well worth any boy's time and efforts. JOHN STELMACH wmv MM .
