It reflects the sincere feelings of all of us here at Frontier. Those students fortunate enough to have Mrs. Eyman for senior history realize the great loss Frontier suffered by her death. A more dedicated teacher could not be found. She loved her work and the students she taught and although she made us work harder than most of us were used to, we knew it was for our own good and appre- ciated what she was doing for us. We did not fully realize the meaning of her frequent absences and felt that her January absence was only temporary. When we were told she wouldn't be back for the rest of the year we began to apprehend the graveness of her condition. Even though Mrs. Eyman knew her days were numbered she never hinted or discussed it with anyone. Teaching was her entire life and as much a part of her as her home. She was always happy to have visitors and her first questions- were of school. She had al- ways taken a part in the senior activities of receiving rings, getting measured for caps and gowns and ordering our calling cards and announcements. She missed sharing these activities with us. Our deepest regret is that she could not live to see us graduate as she had hoped. Her greatest concern was preparing her classes for the final exam and even during the early part of her absence she corrected papers until she could no longer hold a pencil. Alumni who have had Mrs. Eyman along with her present students realize the great loss. Those who have known her loved her deeply and will never forget her. She was always willing to help those who needed it, and spent time with those who wanted help beyond classroom assignments. lt is unfortunate that those students who never knew Mrs. Eyman will never have the privilege to benefit from her teaching and brilliant personality. We are certainly grateful for what she has done to serve the school and everyone around her. l 3 4 Good design is recognized as the cornerstone of art. The school, Frontier Central in particular, is a reflection of the entire field of art. We see this exemplified not only in the physical plant, the functional arrangement of our build- ing, but also in the aims and efforts of the Board of Edu- cation, the Administration, and the Guidance personnel. Around the structure of the schedules which they authorize and supervise, we are able to build, block by block, the composition, the balance, and even the contrasts, the lights and shadows which make for sound, valid education. The teachers are the artists in this adventure of design. Day by day, they, in their classrooms, teach us to discrimin- ate between the excellent and the mediocre. Our carefully arranged bulletin boards are a center of interest in this effort toward good health and good taste, as well as a manifestation of creativity. Our extra-curricular activities furnish desirable contrast to the formal classroom work. They represent colorful relaxation after the flurry of the busy academic day. As we progress on this sea of art, we learn proper perspective and proportion. We see each activity in relation to the numerous other lines in this tre- mendously important design. Design truly permeates our school life. We are aware of it in text books, assembly programs, extra-curricular activities, as well as in our surroundings. The "many-splen- dored" result of this bustle and quiet, action and reflection, light and shadow, is the enriched structure of the whole individual. As day silently yields to twilight, the passerby observes the lighted windows and the penetrating rays which usher in the evening and the mood of the lighted schoolhouse. 5 Leff to Right: Mr. Richard Kryder, Mr. John Kushner, Mr. G. Clem ent Johnston, Attorney, Mr. Edgar Carberry, Mr. Howard A. Durni, Mr. John L. Barber. 6 Mr. Clifford O'Melic1 Mr. Eugene C. Seib OUR FUTURE Americans have long been noted for their optimism. Because of it we have grown from a small insecure nation to a world power during the short span of two hundred years. Today our place as a leader among nations is being challenged. Our hope for the future is being clouded through international conspiracy and intrigue. Our optimism for the future must be built upon a' strong and firm foundation. We have that foundation in our education system which is free and equal to all because we realize "that the cornerstone of success in a free society is individual effort, initiative and diligent application." The students of today must take every educational advantage afforded them. They cannot shirk hard work and long hours of study if they are to fully realize these educational opportunities. Only through utmost effort will they be equal to the responsibilities of tomorrow both local and international in scope. I am sure the "Gateway for 1962" in its reflection of Frontier in all of its aspects will clearly indicate the degree to which our community has gone to make education, as its very best, available to its youth. Tomorrow, today's activities will be history. It is our sincere hope that the "l962 Gateway" will serve as a' record not only of our achievements but also of our unyielding optimism despite the many pitfalls of discouragement. Vernon W. Johnson Boys State, which is a program sponsored by the American Legion, is a citizenship training program designed to give the participant an insight into our democratic form of government. Its chief purpose is to instill a sense of responsibility and obligation by educating the individual in the principles of democracy and the duties, privileges and rights of Americans. The above goal is attained on the basis of the "learn by doing" con- cept. The citizens are divided into two parties, and they then form and run state, county and municipal governments. Conventions, caucuses, ral- lies, elections and legislative iudicial and executive branches conform as nearly as possible to the actual procedure in the state governments. Each delegate has the opportunity to run for the office to which he aspires. Donald Walker The 1961 Boys State consisted of 1,020 delegates chosen from outstanding iuniors in high schools all over the state. It was held on the Colgate University campus in Hamilton, N. Y., from June 23 to July 1. I received the honor of being elected Lt. Governor, the second highest office. To obtain this position one had to participate in several preliminary activities. The candi- date had to run and campaign in the city elections followed by county elections. Then he had to be elected party delegate to the state convention, representing a county which consisted of three cities. The convention, consisting of ten counties, was to nominate the party's candidate for the state ticket. To gain support, coalitions were formed with other counties. We pledged our support in return for theirs. After nominations, party and individual campaigning continued until election. After the inauguration, the legislative bodies met. The Lt. Governor's duty was to preside over the Senate where bills were introduced, debated and voted upon. The whole event-crammed week proved to be a very valuable educational experience. Surely such a week constitutes a high light in the life of any high school iunior so honored. 70 ssyssi s ? : Empire Girls State, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, is a f program designed to inspire a genuine interest in our government. Girls iisi ':i-, C from all sections of New York State are selected to participate in this pro- gram which combined hard work and pleasant social activities. ln May the girls representing Erie County and their mothers were Qlven a get-acquainted dinner at the American Legion Post in Buffalo. A former Girls Stater gave a resume of her visit from the previous year. She C ,QQ i.ry y gave us much to look forward to. A . i On June 23, l96l we traveled by bus to the College of Education at Natalie Yankowski . . , . New Paltz, New York. When we arrived, we really didnt realize what a hectic, exciting and memorable week we were going to have. After regis- tration the girls were assigned to different dormitories. Each girl was assigned a roommate from another part of the state. My roommate was from Germantown, New York. Next on th e agenda was dinner after which there was a formal reception of all the Girl Staters by the presiding officials. On Sunday we had a picnic which provided relaxation and fun for all of us. Monday began the serious side of Girls State. Our political advisor lectured throughout the week on the different phases of government. Speakers from all branches of state government lectured about the specific duties their respective positions entailed. These lectures were inter- esting and informative. Girl Staters volunteered for panel discussions concerning topics of general interest. Each girl was assigned to one of two political parties - either Nationalists or Federalists. At the first nominating convention a political leader was elected to be in charge of party affairs. ln addition all city officials were nominated to represent their party in the election. Campaigning was put into full swing now. Committees were formed to take charge of the different phases of campaigning. l was on the publicity committee for the Nationalist party. The publicity committees of both parties came up with quite a few unique campaigning ideas. There is a considerable amount of work involved in campaigning, but it is interesting and a great deal of fun. At the second nominating convention the state officials were nominated and more campaigning was done. The girls put in a vast amount of hard work in this phase of Girls State. On Friday night the elected state officials Governor, Lt. Governor and others took their oaths of office. This gave us a rewarding feeling after having put so much work and effort into the campaigns. l know that each girl who left Empire Girls State took with her wonderful memories of a rewarding experience because l certainly did. l7'l , I i .lunior Class Officers Back row, leff fo righf: D.
