fngliag cqinif 50 Uougfi Mr. Shivers uses modern techniques. In all grades the English Department en- deavors to help the student express himself by having a commanding knowledge of our lan- guage. Grammer is taught to the underclass- men so that, by the time they are seniors, they will be able to make proper use of the language. ln order to improve the student's own writ- ing, an opaque projector is being used so that composition papers may be shown on a screen and constructive criticisms of the papers can be made by the rest of the class. The works of many famous authors, both American and European, are also read and their styles and themes learned through both the teachers' explanations and the use of records. With such varied experiences the student Ends himself better able to deal with the English language. gil isfozy dlfow European history with hir. Nicolls. The history curriculum covers the periods from ancient times through contemporary American history. The ancient history course is given by Nlrs. YValker to a class of fresh- men, and it includes one short term paper and great stress on research reading. lllr. Nicolls has classes in modern European history, English history, and American history. An authority on the Civil VVar, Elf. Nick combines history with humor and a pleasant story-telling technique in order to make the dry facts come to life for his students. 'lihe senior class is taught contemporary American history, a course entailing both current events and United States history dating from the Civil YVar. A field trip to the United Nations highlights the course.
