A130 The Cross Country team had an ex- tremely successful season. Because of the depth of talent, the Varsity B, LV., and Girls teams also captured first places in many large invitationals. One high point sof the Girls season came at Pallotti where they soundly defeated Collidge, a highly touted team from Washington D.C. The last meet of the season, the State Championship, was held in 40 weather at the Naval academy. Four teams, including Friendly were ex- pected to make a strong showing to capture the State title, Friendly, the underdog came out on top. The Girls team finished second by two tmeaslyl points. There is a personal side to the quest for victory: the runners will tell you about the time they ran twenty- four 440's and finished more dead than alive. The agony of practice and races, all the runners enjoyed the mental and physical strength they gained. They had learned a hard les- son, as Coach Vann so eloquently puts it no pain, no gain .
