BEWARE! Each year something new and different hap- pens at Friendly. Last year everyone was preoc- cupied with the coming of the schoolfs new ad- dition and completion. This year we have some- thing very unique - K-9 Dogs. These dogs are not ordinary German Shephards. These dogs are trained to track down specific scents, the cainines detect even old, faded smells. The dogs are not violent, but will attack when commanded to do so. If there is any reason to believe that someone is in possession of, or dealing drugs, the dogs will be used to sniff lockers and cars. Before and after school hours, the cainines will be brought in by police. To avoid complications, search warrants will first be obtained. Still, if someone is found in possession of drugs, they will be arrested and prosecuted. While just a novelty to some, the cainines will be a threat to others. E 'T it I 'J You zip into the parking lot doing your usual 35, when all of a sudden, BOOM! You scream obscenities, hit the brakes and glare into your rearview mirror. You see . . . speed bumps. Son-of-a-T, l keep forgetting about those God 1 things! Sound familiar? This scene was repeated many times early in the year before Friendly students and even faculty got used to those enormous annoyances strategically placed throughout the parking lot. The speed bumps were installed in November at the request of Mr. Yovich to - what else - slow down people speeding in the parking lot. He had received numerous complaints from both students and faculty about people driving wrecklessly. f'We almost had a couple of kids run over out there he says, So in went 9 speed bumps as a safety precaution. Unfortunately, the first set was a little bit too precautionary -they were too high. After another set of numerous complaints - this time about shot suspensions, ruined mud flaps, and banged-up axles, Mr. Yovich had the speed bumps lowered in December. Also the ones in the driveway in front of the building were removed because of irritated bus drivers. Then, in january when the snow came, the plows clearing the parking lot also cleared some of the speed bumps. They were replaced, and they have been left unaltered since. Mr. Yovich evaluates the speed bumps favorably. He says they have definitely been effective in slowing down speeders in the parking area. So the next time you go to school, think about your poor car before you come flying into the parking lot. STUDENT LIFE 1 25

E5 Sllilnumnra V' .N . H65 degrees??!! lt's freezing in here. Or so it seemed. ln February this year, Prince George's County Schools, including Friendly, were ordered to turn their thermos- tats clown to 650. This was due to the unusually cold winter weather and the shortage of natural gas for heat- ing fuel. While other school systems got a mid-winter vacation because their buildings were closed, we at Friendly were fortunate enough, or unfortunate enough, depending on how you look at it, to only have reduced school temperatures. Although this resulted in frigid classrooms, it could be remedied by wearing sweaters and coats. Complaints were relatively few, and Spring did come, eventually. So the crisis is over for now, but one has to wonder what will happen next winter. Pic 15 Come on, l'm cold enough! 23 The Energy Crisis didn't seem to effect everyone. 37 I knew my car was under there somewhere. 43 Dan Fitzgerald bundles up for the 650 temperature. .N v . 7 styr f , . , 9 STUDENT LIFE X 27
